Today in the Studio, I’m showcasing my new stencil designs, ‘The Journey Home’ found exclusively at ‪@PMartistStudio‬ Its my personal story of finding my birth family, understanding culture and exploring identity.
Come and join me, as I show you how to gel print with these fabulous designs using the magical colours of interference paints. We will then enhance the prints with a few other creative techniques.
We all have the desire to be known and to find where we belong. My journey in finding my way home to New Zealand is not just a tale about discovering family and place of origin, but it is about the discovery of self.
This stencil/stamp design celebrates the value of individual worth. When we know who we really are, we can then be who we were created to be. This strength will give us the courage to embrace life and overcome all the obstacles.

Those stencils & stamps are absolutely stunning! Especially with the paua colours. As is your story. As an adoptee who has also met most of my family, but unfortunately not really had the opportunity to embrace the culture I didn’t grow up with, I think it’s amazing you have managed to embrace yours & remain connected to it. And I hope you’ve had great experiences with both sides of your family, because even though I have been fortunate enough to become friends with most of mine, I know well that not all people want to or are able to.

It’s so interesting. When I bought my first home, I was um’ing & ah’ing about what colours to paint my walls & ceiling. Everywhere I looked where boring neutrals & so many people said they didn’t like the blues, teal, turquoise, purple & burgundy that I love, but I thought b^*gger it! It’s my house! I can always paint over it whenever I have to sell. And then over the last 10-15 years I’ve really gotten into different types of art & I have found so many people who love the brilliant jewel colours like the Paua shell colours. It seems many many artists are drawn towards these same colours like us 😁 PS I still love the colours of the rooms I painted! After all these years

My adult twin daughters will sadly never find their birth paintings because they are from Russia and were abandoned by their birth mother.

I hope your daughters are able to go to Russia one day & explore our heritage, or connect with the Russian community within whatever country they live in now. I was adopted as well & the culture I lost was Russian & Polish. I was fortunate enough to meet most of my family as an adult, but not my biological mother unfortunately, as she died before we could. But I’m very lucky to have one mother - the one I grew up with. She has played a huge part in shaping my life. And I’ve had mixed reactions from various other members of my biological family so I have experienced both being embraced & rejected when reconnecting. I know everyone’s story is different, but I spent most of my life thinking I was given up because I wasn’t wanted enough & was abandoned, but when I met my father I discovered that that wasn’t the case at all & they gave me up for reasons that definitely made sense at the time. And I also learned from his later wife that my father worried about what happened to me & spent a lot of time over many years wishing things had been different & regretting giving me up while also knowing it was the right thing. But I was lucky in that I was able to see in the end that I definitely had a better life than I would have had & although my life is far from perfect, I am glad I ended up who I am & that came from all my experiences including that sense of abandonment & loss. And when I met the part of my family with strong Russian & Polish ties, I also realised that there was a whole culture & Russian women “sisterhood” that comes with that, that I missed out on & is not easy to become part of in my current life, mostly because of my independence rather than their openness. Even if your daughters aren’t able to connect with their biological mother, there are ways for them, you & the rest of your side of their family to connect with people who understand what you all have gone through & how you all feel (because adoption impacts on everyone in the family). And they (& you) may find that helpful. Plus if they are interested in learning more about their Russian heritage, there are definitely ways to connect with people who will embrace them wholeheartedly, no matter which country they’re in. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried contacting one of the agencies who help connect people, but there are many out there, as well as ways of finding connections through DNA testing & heritage websites among others. And even if their birth mother doesn’t want to reconnect, their are sure to be some relatives who do if they’re interested. Sorry, this was all very clumsily worded & I hope I haven’t offended you by trying to offer my awkward support & understanding in this. I just know how complex it can all be, and not always rainbows & sunshine, but no matter what you’ve all experienced in the process, none of you are alone. There are many of us out here who have felt all the good, bad, happy & sad things that come along with being adopted, adopting or giving up a child. And just having answers can really help, even if they’re not the answers we hoped for. Particularly because then we can come to terms with them & find peace within ourselves. And find our own paintings & patterns that are unique to us. Wishing you all the best 😊
