Nice job Mike and certainly worth trying to see if the copper makes a noticeable difference. I have seen others use a non-genuine copper coat solution and it seems a more positive effect was gained from sanding the finish back to give greater exposure to the copper dust as the last step before hitting the water. Look forward to you sharing your option in due course.
@mjcooke2sailingmostly4 жыл бұрын
I don't see why it won't work, it got a lot of copper in the coating, equal weight for weight copper/epoxy. Gelshield is similar, I believe, to the solvent free epoxy used in the named brands. Yes, they do say to sand the surface. I've not been back yet and will see whether I will need to do that. I'd prefer to leave as is and see how that goes and sand if it doesn't work next time it's in a boatyard. It will be a short season anyway with the boat moving a lot and moored in a fresh/salty mix location that doesn't foul much so not a good test. Human nature to do only what we have to! i didn't want to show a 'how to' video or someone might blame me if they are not happy with their own efforts, ha ha.
@adventure40s4 жыл бұрын
mjcooke2 Mike, totally agree ref the “how to” videos, too many variables for a one size fits all. If you have time it would be good to do a follow up assessment at the end of this season and next. Great to see you posting video content again, see you out on the water after July 4th 👍

Hi Mike. Lovely finish on the Fulmar hull after a lot of hard work. I scrapped the old antifouling off my Seahawk 34 five winters ago and said afterwards I would never do it again! I'll gladly pay the man with the blasting gun if it ever needed doing again! Sadly, I haven't seem Magic Hawk since February thanks to lockdown so I'm eagerly waiting for 6th July now to get cracking again. Best wishes
@mjcooke2sailingmostly4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, Tough not getting to your boat, I only recently was allowed access to mine. I made a sail cover/lazybag with an old Singer in the early part of the lockdown and was glad then of the work to occupy myself, being indoors a lot. I'll do a video once it's fitted. I still need battens for it. I did all the scraping, chipping and sanding end of last year and the job was a long but oddly rewarding one. Tot up the travel costs and the materials and yes, probably paying for blasters would work out near similar costs. Restrictions in the yard mean though that the boat would have had to be moved at my cost to a place where they could do the blasting. I'd be wary also of the level of blast, they could easily make a lot more work for me if they over did it. As it was, I had a tarp under the boat and collected 5 or 6 bread bags of old paint. Would I do again? Yes, but not for a while, ha ha.

Lots of preparation work and a long day to do 3 coats quite an expense but I thought the boat deserved it. I watched a few of your latest videos, I hope your plans are successful. A good channel in the making on a boat I know so well.

KZbin stopped my notifications, annoying, as some comments left unanswered for a month. Do you know how I can correct that? maybe it's because I have been demoted in their league tables being less than 1k subs. There's me thinking nobody wants to comment any more, ha ha. I had a copper/epoxy boat someone else had done, it was ok, the previous owner told me to lightly abrade every year. lot of prep work involved and a long day painting 3 coats. Yes, worth it I hope. I need a few weeks afloat now as payback.

@@mjcooke2sailingmostly I have no idea how the KZbin notification thing works. Sometimes I get an email, sometimes I get a little red circle by the bell,, and sometimes I get nothing. Hi Mike, I had planned to do this to my Griffon after those winter gales, then lockdown happen and cant get to ABC. May just slap a coat of primer and cheap antifoul on now and do it this coming winter rather than try and rush it in July. Are you putting her in or selling her?
@mjcooke2sailingmostly4 жыл бұрын
Hi James, tough not being allowed here to your boat but things changing soon , 4th, 6th July? Maybe as it will be a short season, put her in as is and do a scrub on a beach if necessary. I did all the prep work end of last year. I painted phosphoric acid on the chipped, scraped, ground down keels then and left till recently then the Fertan which worked well. It's a lot of work if you are commuting a distance, would end up expensive in travel costs unless you are a fast worker! I hope to launch as soon as I know that I can travel unrestricted, Scotland beckons, it's maybe 15th July when I may be welcome there. Hope you get some use yourself. May well sell after I get a good cruise and some payback time afloat.

@@mjcooke2sailingmostly I plan on heading up on 6th July and make a start, then do a few long weekends. At best it will be August before she's in, sold law I bet the weather turns and we get a rough August / Sept/Oct, after all that great weather we had in the Spring. Enjoy your travels Mike.
@joeswinny76864 жыл бұрын
I did this about eight years ago on a Sunray 20 and it worked a treat. It's all about exposing copper on the outside if you do this by lightly abrading the surface you should have a positive outcome - if you leave it sealed it won't work. There has been such a lot written about copper coat over the years but when all said and done presenting a copper finish to the sea is all that is needed - it's not rocket science. I purchased copper dust from East Coast Glass Supplies I just wondered where you got yours from?
@mjcooke2sailingmostly4 жыл бұрын
Hello Joe, What epoxy did you use? If it was Gelshield, then your experience will certainly add weight to this job. I haven't been back to the boat yet and will do a little test of abrading. I'm tempted to leave as is and abrade if necessary next time she would be in a boatyard, I'll see next week. i used an equal weight for weight copper/epoxy mix, 5kg of copper ought to do something. Gelshield is similar, being solvent free, I believe, to epoxies used in the branded products available. I owned a boat a few years back which had been done and the previous owner told me to abrade every year before launch. I bought all copper, rollers etc from MB Fibreglass NI. I have used them before too.
@joeswinny76864 жыл бұрын
@@mjcooke2sailingmostly The epoxy I used was Blakes Gel protect, it had a number after it that I don't recall. I'm pretty sure it was water based as most are now I think. I remember looking up the legal limit of epoxy to resin, you can find that somewhere online though for a one off the more copper the better. I did another boat with Jotun 90 epoxy paint with just one coat and a lot of copper. When I abraded it, it was like looking at solid copper. I know that worked well for one season then I sold the boat and never saw it again. The paint was very easy to rub down but I doubt it lasting as long as resin. What you are trying to achieve is a replica of the old copper bottom sheathing method; marine growth won't attach itself to copper obviously. If you don't lightly rub it down every copper particle will have epoxy coating it protecting marine growth. I'm all for trying anything that gets you out of scraping old anti fouling from the bottom of boats.

Yes, I did epoxy the Mirage last year, she's now in new ownership. I had the idea then of adding the copper but only put 1kg in. It will need more. I hope to launch soon and head north. I saw somewhere that Scotland will open up 15th July, we here 4th or 6th, so will look at getting off asap. I made a new lazybag in the early part of the lockdown and videoed and will show when i get a clip of it on the boom. I still need to find battens somewhere. Good to hear you are heading that way, I'll look your fb up and message you on departure times likely to be earlier than you.

Where are you off to in this, what do you think of the Tempest
@mjcooke2sailingmostly4 жыл бұрын
I hope to launch as soon as restrictions here and Scotland allow travel further, we are behind England. I saw somewhere it may be 15th July for Scotland. Scotland beckons, I made a new lazy bag sail cover with an old Singer and will do a video when it's fitted. we surprise ourselves what we can do with a bit of time on our hands! Cheap too. I don't know the Tempests, only from adverts. The more modern Westerlies certainly have lots of space, the wide beam carried aft makes the space, same though for all modern designs. wish Westerly had not decided on painted decks though, makes work. You thinking of buying?
@santamulligan6764 жыл бұрын
mjcooke2 well I like the vega and then you sold yours,I’ve always liked the fulmar, I understand the headlining are a pain, I wish they had made the rear birth a decent cabin. Tempest has two rear cabins, other contender is sadler34. I watched the fulmar in the fastnet it was almost sailing backwards and yet they are supposed to be quick, yours would be good for skulking round estuaries. Keel bolts ok?
@mjcooke2sailingmostly4 жыл бұрын
@@santamulligan676 My old Vega is still here in North Wales, same yard as mine. The headlining on all Westerlies goes at some time. Mine was replaced around 3 yrs ago. New engine too, a 3YM Yanmar, best I've ever had on maybe 15 boats. Wish it didn't have a water pump belt though. The 1/4 berth is very wide, good for two kids or close friends! There are rare aft cabin Fulmars. I'm impressed with the speed, I can keep a reef in the main and get good speeds. Very light on the helm with semi balanced rudder. Draft is around 4ft, They are two big keels. there can be slamming in between on the flattish hull when punching into waves. Great feeling of space for a single hander! Around 11ft beam. Sadler 34 would be a good alternative, watch out for problems with the foam sandwich.
