The story of Bessie Ellen's owner and skipper, Nikki Alford, from 'unruly teenager' sent to sea, to custodian of this 120 year old tall ship, with a few ocean crossings in between! Doing something “for the love of it” may be unfashionable today, but there is hope. I had just started a KZbin video project about people who love what they do, and thought My biggest problem was finding candidates. In literature there is Villiers, Conrad, Hemingway In the world of building what they wrote about there is still Nikki Alford and her story of Bessie Ellen. A saga so beautifully told here. We still sail for free off a free wind driving our imaginations and the sea gulls still laugh at we fools of wooden ships knowing damn well they and we would have it no other way in our wildest dreams.

Ms Alford is made of stern stuff. I suspect many “poor” people (i.e. not independently wealthy tycoons’ projects) had similar romantic ideas of restoring an old hulk, but very few endured through the cultural apathy, lack of support and financial desperation. I thoroughly enjoyed her tale of the steely sailor who warmed to her when he realised she had earned her stripes. A succinct little lesson. People are under no obligation to love you, but it is possible (not guaranteed) to slowly gain respect by calmly and confidently revealing hard earned merit.

What a wonderful history, both that of Nikki and the Bessie Ellen. I had the privilege of acting as Mate aboard the replica galleon 'Golden Hinde' now on display in London, in 1980 we brought her from Japan to Plymouth, 6 months, 12,500 miles.. I was thinking recently that I'd like to do one more trip aboard a seriously capable sailing ship.. I'll be looking out for the Bessie Ellen if she continues working.. Well done Nikki.. to say we need more women like you is a major understatement, all I ever hear women talking about is grandchildren ! :

I don't want to die wondering what could have been on my death bed. Some things in life simply have to be done, often at great sacrifice. Well done Nikki. An incredible story brilliantly retold. Saving Bessie Ellen = simply brilliant. I raced former the Olympic Class Flying Dutchman in Australia between 1878-90. Then it stopped until 2000 when I started racing 4-8 weeks per yr all over Europe in FD regattas & worlds'. My crew was a famous 3-time Russian Olympic sailor. It was a magical time in my life. It cost me a small fortune, but ya can't take if with you. Right?
