Great video... chopsticks it is... Great shape and polish... love the green and blue tip

Chopsticks are the best. Easy to cut/file down to size and shape. They also seem to hold better than dowel most of the time (bamboo might be less dense or somthing).

Great job, especially since you chose if on special wishes while it was still in the rough.

You can get better and better at picking rough when hunting for specifics. The hardest part is picking the pattern on the face. That is still absolute luck for me.

It turned out very well, considering the constraints of size and price. Great job.😊

Yeah I dug through 3 bags of rough to find this one. I knew I had something like it somewhere... Turns out I have a fair bit of Coober Pedy rough but running low on everything else.

@RoysRocks Tried to get you on email, but think failed. I really want to get a belemnite? Better rough. I'm going hard, now. Taken so long to get this hand working. Still splint it if on big jobs. I just seem to fail with email!!LOL

My very first Australian opal i ever cut turned out to be ribbon pattern with red and blue in it but the shape is similar to this one but a little wavy in the face but it's still one of my favorite because of the pattern 😜...my wife and i call it "the wizard skipper" lm😅😅😅

Sounds like a hell of a stone for a first cut! My first cut was a piece of cracked potch that I still have haha.

If the stone is to be set, please flaten out the backside and round its egdes a little. Makes it way easier for the jeweller 👍 as always thanks for the video Roy 😁

Yeah there is already a bevel cut into the bottom after dop removal and back flattening. Not my first stone.

Looks really good. Hard to know how much work to put into a $50 stone. At some point, you end up working for free. Hoping to see some of your bezel setting work soon! Not the easiest skill to pick up. I’ve done a few so far. Last one was actually pretty good.
@RoysRocks3 ай бұрын
Yeah I dont price in any of my time since I'd be doing it anyway. I think a lot of people are ready for the bezel setting reveal... apart from me 😂

Tried dopping with SUPA glue the other day and omg it was sooo strong I almost had to cut the opal off the stick
@RoysRocks3 ай бұрын
Worst case you can chop it and grind it back but I always let the water get the job done.

Inclusions just mean its a real stone, best proof of authenticity when set. The Opal Gods where smiling.
@RoysRocks3 ай бұрын
I think the idea of this one is an open backed setting (hence the no see through stone allowed) which I really like. A few inclusions in the back and you can be pretty sure it isn't a composite opal.

Very cool video. Will those bits polish agate?
@RoysRocks2 ай бұрын
Agates are a bit harder so the final polish should probably be AlOx but apart from that they would work fine. I've done fire agates on the channel with these.
@ethanwalker78652 ай бұрын
@@RoysRocksI watched that, very informative. I'm just getting started but we mostly have agate here. thanks for all the great content, very helpful.

When you said you keep it over night from removing the glue wouldn't that make the stone crack like a Ethiopian opal that is hydroplaned or is that type of opal different?
@RoysRocks3 ай бұрын
A standard Coober Pedy opal wont be affected by the water. It could sit in water for years and be fine. Much more stable than Ethiopian opal and a different structure. It can craze if left in direct sunlight or crack if over heated but that is about it. Most Aussie opal is like that.

Hi Roy, I only just saw this one. Q. How do you dissolve the super glue? Do the chemicals get absorbed into the sand of face? Polish after or all good? I don't know.
@RoysRocksАй бұрын
I dont dissolve it just soak in water until it peels off the back of the stone or stick then pick the rest off. No chemicals to worry about then. Full cut and polish before removal.
@elishadoyle81913 ай бұрын
What do you mean to push harder otherwise there will be scratches? Nice job by the way
@RoysRocks3 ай бұрын
If you push too lightly as you go up grits you wont undo the full damage of the previous bur. Even with coarse sandpaper if you lightly brush some timber it'll do very little so you have to make sure there is enough pressure for the abrasion to be effective.
@elishadoyle81913 ай бұрын
@@RoysRocks Ok thanks for that. That's probably why some of the scratches are hard to get out
@Abloutions3 ай бұрын
Good stuff Roy.. thanks! question is what would you value it at, 50 dollars?
@RoysRocks3 ай бұрын
Yeah probably hard to judge just by video but because of a few flaws I'd be okay with $50. It is certainly less than $100/ct. I think it is going to make a good $100-200 ladies ring.
