All to often those within the gem cutting industry are trying to make a commercial gain at the expense of others. If a design is modified please give the original designer credit.

I "modify" many designs by others. I have only created one design from scratch since I started faceting in Dec. 2019 and it's pretty simple at that. It is very hard to come up with something no one else over 400 years has thought of before. When some designs do not show the name of who designed it, I leave that part as "unknown". When I modify a design for better light return OR when I rearrange the Cutting Sequence (which is often scrambled or just wasn't Meet Point Design) I only include "Modified by MY NAME" while leaving the original designer's name on the design. I'd love to come up with a clever custom design but I don't see it happening. I am more than happy to give credit where credit is due. Cliff shared one of his own designs with me a few years ago. Any time I have cut it, people knew who's design it was.

I think all designers want is a credit and a thank you. There are big players commercially making serious dollars from designs that people have probably spent weeks or months to create. This would include test cutting etc. As for those who cut a design for themselves or a few for friends or family it's no big deal. Same thing with music. Sit at home and sing a Beatles song your not in breach of copyright. Sing the song and publish it and make money from it then you are in big trouble (if caught). Publish the song legally with a credit and you still make money and a small royalty fee goes to the artist sounds fair. I don't care who uses a design I came up with, not that design that many gems, but a thanks shows respect. Cheers Cliff

As Cliff knows there have a couple of instances with my designs. There are some really sad and selfish people out there. If you do use someones design or modify or base yours or even just inspired by a design, credit the original designer. Most designers don't mind you cutting or tweaking, but to commericalise or blatantly claim for a design is going too far.

So true Tony. Those with commercial interests need to give credit for creativity of others hard work.

We have the same problems in aluminium boat making in Australia. Boat designers make a design and by Australian law it can be changed 15% and then called your own design. There’s not much anyone can do about it and people do it all the time.

It's unfortunate that practically anything and everything that has any value, is stolen or misused by dubious losers. Some countries are well known for it too. Furthermore, the cost of prosecuting patent theft is generally way more than most producers and lay-people have. The only winners are often just the Lawyers.

A lot of time and hard work goes in the background before an actually product is produced Sorry to hear others are stealing your ideas and your designs. It's not fair, but this is rampant in all areas of manufacturing. You and your family miss out, and the county often misses out. So in the end we all miss out. You should at least get a design royalty of some form, but you don't.

I didn't facet this gem. Someone else did, but they used a design that I worked hard to modify so others could facet it.This person called this design by another name and made it his own. Bob Keller never got a mention.

I don't mean to be mean, but this really seems meaninglessly possessive. In the art world, we have a problem with people tracing, following lineart one-to-one and calling it their own. That's not what's happening here. You are complaining that someone is doing their own rendition, putting forth work to alter a design to work with what they have. I don't know this CGS program, but you also seem to shoot yourself in the foot as it seems as if this design comes with the program by default? Please correct me if I am wrong. As well, what is "commercial gain" in this case? Is he selling the design for money, or is he just getting revenue off the video? If you really want to play fair here, if this video is monetized (I do not know, I use adblock), you are explicitly making money off of this person's video by posting it in its entirety without transformation. And I don't see a credit to the user anywhere in this video; by your standards, that should be considered theft, no? Explicitly, because things were changed, means it is no longer the original design. This is as baseless as that whole Jelly Art controversy last week.

Give mickey triangle ears and see if your reasoning works out😂 Its about having the respect to mention where you got inspired/whose work you took as baseline, simple as that

You cannot be serious? Should I be giving the user a credit for taking a design I modified that took hours to complete? Also, it was fully credited to the original designer and freely shared for no financial gain. I think those who have made commercial gain from design theft are lucky not to be sued. Using adblock takes money away from content creators. That is a form of theft. KZbin are trying to stamp that out. I think I've made 50 cents from this video so far, but is has cost me over a couple of bucks in energy and internet fees to make it. Small content creators like myself make videos because we enjoy it . There is no money in it and I don't sell my gems. I have a regular day job and this is a hobby...You have missed the point! Artists deserve to be credited. Cheers.

Cliff, in every industry you will find scammers, thank you for bringing this up. Some people are disrepectful to others and some are too stupid to come up with the goods.

I think a simple credit to the original artist just shows respect. Design theft is how some countries take food out of the mouths of people from other countries. Doesn't sound fair....Cheers

Great video as always Cliff. Glad someone addressed this issue as I find it fairly common.

Thanks...Becoming more common as there are so many gem cutters that are becoming commercially involved in the hobby. Eventually they won't make money because there will be too much competition. I'll stick with having fun and going to my gem club and cutting some nice gems at home for my wife. I won't share any designs, only with close friends and people I trust...Cheers

I can understand being proud of a modification but to then call the design your own is a sign of low moral character. If someone finds it that easy to step over the line it would be wise to avoid any financial transactions. Even better to warn the public. You are one of my favorite cutters. Thank you for looking out for others.

@@VintageTimeGems I've done that many times. But Cliff, you and I must be watching different videos. Nowhere in Ty Houston's post do I see him claim to have invented this design. There is no diagram posted. Whoever uploaded the image to the eye designs website did not include a diagram either. As far as I can tell this is just a person cutting the design and recording the process, not claiming any ownership.
