I went gold and gem grubbing in Dahlonega years ago on a school trip, many great finds, but I realized the best finds are the ones you find out in the actual river banks, the element of being out in the wilderness makes it that much more engaging and enjoyable.

If it makes you feel better, what you are calling "gold dust" is actually mica flakes. It looks alot like gold flakes but true gold is alot more yellow.

I go camping in this area when I can get away from West Palm Beach. There are a lot of short vids you can view to help you in the panning process. But the outdoors is so great. Just have fun.

My wife and I like the national forests. There's a nice one in that area. Camping is free. I'm fairly equipped for prospecting but also I'm an avid trout fisherman and again fairly well equipped. It's all about seeing the beauty of nature. We always leave our camp sites cleaner than when we get there. Have a great day and thank you for replying.

Pisgah National Forest has the water falls which were filmed in Last of the Mohicans in NC. You might enjoy. Not to far away is Cascade Lakes Campgrounds. Also in GA, look up Dicks Creek Falls. About 25 minutes from Gold and Gem..once again it's great to be able to enjoy oneself in nature

That poor lady misidentified that dark stuff as obsidian. There is no obsidian outside of the western halfof the US and obsidian breaks in chondroidal fractures and those rocks broke like crystals so it was probably black tourmaline or extremely dark garnets since those are actually native to Ga

Been to that place plenty of times , you need a chair boots , sit right in creek, two five gallon buckets fill five gallon bucket with water, put screen on bucket, wash material, look for gems, then pan dirt in water bucket. We worked that same pile, my wife had a 2 carat sapphire we had cut picked right from that pile.

Just got back from there. The clay is heavy laden with micah. Which is very dominant there. Gold will settle down to the bottom.of the pan. You can check out my vids on it! Lol. It's all about the fun though! You had a blast and that what counts the most!!!!

I'm sorry brother, that's not a pile of gold flakes you're seeing everywhere. I believe is it formica flakes and they are all over the northern half of GA. I may have the name wrong but they are a shimmering gold hue and under close inspection they are translucent. You can find huge specimens with the flakes still embedded

You rarely see gold dust. If that was gold dust they probably would have an active mine there cause there would so much gold. Just pan one of your pans out…you will if there is real Georgia gold in there. Once you see it one time you will clearly see and know the difference 😊

Not for nothing, but that is mica, not gold dust. Gold dust is not going to be sitting on top of the sand, it is heavy and sinks do to the hard pan.

Thanks a bunch. We’ll try again. Spent some time with a fellow in Dahlonega this summer who has panned since a boy. Showed me some tips. I’ll make a better run at it next go round.
