My mother used to own this property. ( State registered gold mine on Gold Mine Road). I always wanted to prospect on it, but I was a young man then had to work so much that I never had the time.

The Whisenhunt family was there during the war of northern aggression. 6 brothers fought for the Confederacy. My great, great grandfather was in the Carrol county invincibles. His brother William Warren Whisenhunt died the day Atlanta fell

Good video overall, well researched does sound like VR is the first gold rush in US (which is Cabarrus County, NC ca. 1800) but VR gold rush mid-1820s was first in Georgia. Interesting talk on gold formation. Berry's Pharmacy (1890s) sounds like 1830s. The Georgia capital shown is the 1889 Atlanta capitol and not the Milledgeville Capitol in the early 1800s. The City of Villa Rica sign shown in video is now gone (Dec 2007. Ernest E. Blevins, MFA Historian/Hist. Preservation Villa Rica

All gold is originally from outer space. Google it. This video does not even mentioned that and it abruptly ends.......seemingly only telling part of the story. Bad video in my opinion. .

It must be a case of mass amnesia if no one remembered gold was found here in 1826. In fact, it wasn't. The first mention of gold in Carroll County does not occur until May of 1830. This was 9 months after the FIRST gold discovery was announced in Georgia newspapers as being found on Duke's Creek in Habersham County. Villa Rica never had a gold rush, nor was it discovered prior to 1829.

IIRC....Coker Creek Tennessee was mined in 1818. The Cherokee were driven out of the East Tennessee area into Northern Georgia. Echota (The Cherokee capital) was originally just northeast of Cleveland Tennessee, and then was moved to North Georgia where it is now known as 'New Echota'. Believe it or not, the 'Trail of Tears' was fueled by the gold rushes...............we just had to get the Cherokee to sign treaties to make the land take over official.

The trail of tears was fueled by Andrew Jackson, he took notice of the rich farm land and dense forests on his way back from New Orleans. The treaties were not fulfilled, some estimate more than 10 thousand died on the forced evacuation by way of starvation, thirst, and disease. Jackson became an.extremely rich man but was allowed because he was a "hero". Yeah

Thanks for the feedback. We couldn't be overly concerned with exact date accuracy of pictures, since the ones shown were the only ones we could find in archives. I'm surprised that you weren't brought into the project for consulting if you're one of VR's historians...we could have used you I'm sure!

The first gold rush of any significance was actually in North Carolina 30 years before the Georgia discovery. The gold from Georgia wasn't much compared to California and Alaska but it was,of a higher purity..22 k It was so pure that the U.S. Government used it for minting coins.

Very true, and later in the film it addresses the fact that the Cherokee were continually pushed from their land so the gold could be harvested. Very tragic, like most all of early settling of America.

There are still active mines in northern Georgia. From reports I've read, the richest mines were found to be in Chilton county Alabama. The reports show most of the productive mines are now under water. Guess who owns those locations.....The Southern Company.
