“It’s only a fairly recent thing that Asian females have been able to be the protagonists of stories,” Gemma Chan tells Zing Tsjeng in the latest episode of British Vogue’s In Conversation video series. “I think we’re making progress.” Chan’s own career reflects this long overdue shift. Thank you so much for this powerful interview. I’m a Chinese American female with parents who grew up in Hong Kong. Since the 1970’s I grew up in Caucasian dominated cities. You learn to adapt to your environment good or bad. I’ve been able to do small roles over the years, but only as the token Asian. Only recently was I asked to play a role using Cantonese. I was nervous at first, but feel better knowing that this wasn’t about race, just diversity. Living in Portland, Oregon- the city of protesters and protests, you do see up front how much mental and physical damage racism does. I constantly worry about my father who also lives here. I absolutely love this city and only hope things change for the better. 🙏
