Hi Gemma, I am just starting out in coloured pencils and have been watching a lot of your tutorials. Can I please ask how do you know when to use Solvent vs Blending vs Neither? I am enjoying your videos. Thanks for posting them.

Thank you, getting into colored pencils after over 50 years and your clear teaching is invaluable. So new to this I not only didn't know about solvents but that you could lay more color on top of once dried. Blessings 🙏

I'm on tears because of that odorless mineral spirit that got "wasted" doing this video. RIP Zest-it solvent. ;( No, really this was such a useful tip. I've seen so many artists use way too much OMS and still get pretty nice results. The problem is that you shouldn't tip the brush to solvents so many times without wiping them properly in one session, you should use what is left on it every time. It feels dry... It's not dry, it still blends! The other thing with using too much is that the underlayer is not dry if solvent is used too much at the beginning of blending session. It's not going to blend so smooth if it's not completely dry, its just going to muddy up the first layer, and then you got nothing. DO NOT USE TOO MUCH SOLVENT! Wipe the brush (to a kitchen towel or something that u use) to that stage that you don't feel any moisture touching it with your finger! And as you go on with one session let it just be and use it at is. You need to use solvents less the more you do layers. It's going to blend.

Thank you! This was short and super to the point! I got myself a 24 set of Faber Castell Polychromos, but found them to be terribly patchy and not as easy to blend, despite layering colors on top of each other. I tried using rubbing alcohol, but it didn’t blend, as well as I thought it would. I tried baby oil instead, as I felt that since this was a dry type of pencil, perhaps something greasy will break down the pigments, and I was right! Not only did it blend and make the colors more vibrant, but it also allowed me to go over the work with more color layering. ❤ Now, if only baby oil was Travel friendly 😅🥲

Great video. Really enjoying your content. I’m struggling with getting the white polychromos to make any marks on top of solvent layer. Using Arteza 300 cold press. Any advice?

Thank you, Gemma. I’m new to drawing and I tried colored pencils a couple times now and use burnishing pencils. I’ve been afraid of solvents but I think I’m going to make the leap.

2:20 baby oil or linseed oil work fine but their treatment and behavior is totally different than solvents. Oils are not solvents and they never got fully dry, and they make the paper semi transparent. I love them primarily with oil pastels, but keep in mind: they are oils and not solvents.

Great tips..... However, I like to leave a couple of points of feedback. The background music is unnecessary. It adds nothing and is very distracting. No offence meant whatsoever, but please try to stop 'talking with your hands'! Thanks & best wishes x
