I was recently researching ingredients found in many colored pencils and came across paraffin. This got me thinking…can you blend colored pencils with it? So I decided to give it a try! Watch me compare several different solvents and mediums to paraffin oil to see which one is the best at blending colored pencils. I compare it to Odorless Mineral Spirits, Rubbing Alcohol, Petroleum Jelly and Baby Oil.

Just to inform you that reporting these scammers does no good at all. I have been doing this and it takes mere SECONDS for them to be kicked back out to your comments section. I think our only option is if they stop getting ANY takers of their bait. Hopefully as the word gets around, eventually, they'll finally move on. This thorough, side-by-side evaluation of blending media for pencils was fascinating! We asked one of our art materials information specialists about using paraffin oil with colored pencils, and they said that non-drying oils similar to paraffin oil impart permanent softness essential to oil pastel, and they thought adding paraffin oil to colored pencil would functionally convert the pencil lead into something more like oil pastel. They thought this technique would work best on a heavy paper or absorbent board, so that the oil could be absorbed and the medium could firm up and solidify, since it wouldn't "cure' like oil paint. They suggested using glassine paper between drawings in storage to prevent transferring oil stains to other artwork.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights. They were very valuable and informative. FYI…I was pleased to find that after a few days, the paraffin oil test swatches dried well. I plan to do a follow up video where I can do even more in-depth tests. I will be sure to keep in mind your recommendations. Thanks again.

Vaseline works excellent for blending colour pencils. It is a great alternative to expensive blenders available in Australia.

Mineral oil and paraffin is the same, the active ingredient of baby oil. And they are the liquid form of vaseline. But, in the beauty industry is another ingredient that works like oil (oil-disolve-oil) and like mineral spirits, who works and then evaporate. Is cyclomethicone silicone. Is light and volatile. When dries, left nothing behind. I keep a jar (with a sponge inside, so I can control the amount) saturated with cyclomethicone and I use either q tip or brush. I, even, make a blender marker with this. I hope that helps someone. ( Here,in Greece, I bought it for about 5 euros/100ml). Happy coloring.

Chatty Stacie here today! When my nephew and I color together, we like to make our own blending stumps, and we use wax cubes (the kind that melt to disperse scents (using only the heat of an incandescent lightbulb), wax liquified in a burning candle, and we even touch the tortillions to our tongue sometimes. But my favorite item to use is fn\he perfect, tiny, portable, and oh so convenient lip balm/Chapstick! They have a wonderful consitency and a little goes a long way. I hold onto the little containers when it's too low to spread on my lips and use the tortillion to dip into the well. That way, I can spread them around in every area/bag/tin I use for coloring. It also works on crayons, but it's harder to achieve. I also have a giant stick of sun block suspended in an oily wax substance; it lost its potency to block UV rays long ago but there is still a huge amount left that would otherwise end up in the landfill or ocean!

I've always used Gamsol with a blending stump which works much better than a brush, but I'm going to try the Paraffin Oil. I really like the results you got with that. Never would I use baby oil because the smell (just like baby powder) reminds me of changing dirty diapers (LOL). It's important to note that Gamsol is an ARTIST grade odorless mineral spirit, not the type you buy at Home Depot. Thanks for the research & testing. Saves us a lot of time when you do it for us!

I checked on Amazon (CDN) and this paraffin product cost over $30 not counting taxes. On the same page there were a couple of different options for Neem Oil which is also used in many beauty products from toothpaste to hair products and everything in-between. It also cost half as much as the paraffin oil so next time I order something I will include Neem oil and give it a try. It never occurred to me to try a medium for coloured pencils so I did some struggling in some of my pictures. This video is so helpful - thank you so much!

Hello. I'm not sure how the KZbin algorithms selected this video to add to my 'normal' mix of offerings, but boy am I glad it happened. Unfortunately I have low vision so am unable to do much of what might be considered traditional art, but I do craft and enjoy all sorts of experimenting with different products. I have sets of colored pencils that have never been used - because of vision - but I am now inspired to take them down off the nigh shelf and just play some. Thanks so very much for this informative demonstration. I particularly appreciated the idea of using the eye-dropper bottles for these liquid mediums. Genius. I've subscribed and will go back and enjoy many of your older videos as well. Thank you again. Also, do I hear a dog snoring gently in the background? As a lover of the brachycephalic breeds, it was music to my ears. Diane
