Gemmy 2002 Blue Vest Spinning Snowflake Snowman (1st & 2nd Gen) - “Snow Miser” & “Let It Snow”

I decided to clump these two together into one upload for a lot of reasons, but mainly because I’ve already posted the 1 song model and the video is still up; you can see it here:

There have only been two major updates since the making of that video, and I think one is pretty obvious: I posed the spinning arm again so he actually spins the snowflakes like he’s supposed to. Believe me, he goes INSANE on an adapter 😂. And update #2 is… I sold him on eBay awhile ago to make room for my new two song version. The moment I listed him it felt wrong, and I started thinking about taking the listing down, but then he sold instantly lol. It’s sad to see him go, but I’m sure he found a good home, and I don’t need two identical snowmen that do almost the exact same thing anyway.
Some of you may already know where I got the two song model from: the middle of the woods for free. I’m not kidding, he belonged to a hoarder who had like 12 trailers scattered throughout the woods on his property, and all of the trailers were packed to the brim with random crap. This was arguably my best find of the day though, and I’m sure you can imagine the feelings rushing through my head when I randomly spotted this guy literally UNDERNEATH the trailer sitting on some kind of broken table thing. Between the trailer and all the trees above, he was shielded from the sun and weather surprisingly well, but he was definitely not protected from the moisture. As you’d imagine, everything inside was completely rusted, from the screws to the motors. The circuit board was just a solid orange color, and there was no doubt in my mind that it was totally ruined. As you can see, I was wrong. I scrubbed all the rust and corrosion off, and almost all the wires (which were also rusted all the way through) pulled off in the process. I did a few other things to the board too, including taking the IC off and soaking the rest of the board in contact cleaner for a few hours. I never would’ve done something like that if I actually thought I had a chance at saving the thing, but I was being pretty careless because I knew I wasn’t gonna get it working again. I started experimenting with the IC on different boards to see if I could make something else work, but it didn’t matter, because when I finally wired up the original board and powered it on, it worked just fine! While all the wires have been replaced, he’s actually still running on his original board somehow. It looks great now that it’s all cleaned off, which is pretty amazing. These also have a second, smaller PCB attached to the try me plug I wasn’t able to save, but it doesn’t actually have any components on it so I just wired it straight to a new plug.
The outer skin actually wasn’t terrible, considering where it came from anyway. Don’t get me wrong, it was still extremely dirty- so dirty I had to spray it off with a hose before I was even allowed to put it in our washing machine lol. I had to wash it a couple times to get all the stains out, but in the end it turned out perfect. I also needed to sew the hat back into place because it was coming off.
Both the front and back levers were snapped and so was one of the chest plates, yet somehow the 10 tooth in the hips was fine. I replaced it anyway, along with the gears in the hat arm and spinning arm, and after a couple attempts to clean out the original motors I ended up replacing all 3. To fix the snowflakes, I stole a chunk of clear wire from the inside of another spinner, soldered new LEDs on it, and just used normal wire for the rest of the wire you can’t see from the outside.
And finally, he’s done. It took a lot of effort to get him in the condition you see him in here, but honestly I am very surprised how easy it was overall- I was expecting a lot worse when I first found him 😂.
The classic 2 song is definitely one of my favorite spinners in the series, and something I never thought I would really own. Yet here he is… oh and I also found another one yesterday at a merchant center for $8, vid on that one coming later 🤣

Yeah lol, I still don’t really believe it myself. I kinda knew it was a 2 song when I found it, just due to the soft head and the try me jack on the back, but I was still super hyped hearing it play for the first time when I was almost positive the board was dead 😂

When browsing for these guys online, I tend to only focus on the ones with the perfectly formed heads like the gen 1 in this video! The "deformed" ones i'm talking about could be the gen 2 in this video, as he is kind of looking down and has a lop-sided head. Love the video!!

Yeah lol, that tends to happen on these early models because they don’t have a hard plastic skull underneath like the later models do- they’re just plush. Although, I guess you could just put more stuffing in them to shape them up a little more. I kinda like the way my gen 2 looks lol

It’s amazing you got this guy fixed despite the condition he was in on the inside. I think that goes with just about everything you were able to restore from the hoarder house 🤣 And can we talk about how identical the pitch on this guy is to the original song from The Year Without A Santa Claus?

Yep, although I’ll admit I definitely was NOT able to fix everything I got from that hoarder, I literally found some stuff just laying outside on the ground lol. I haven’t given up yet or anything, I still have the items I haven’t been able to restore, I just need to find the time to try again. And you’re right, I’m not sure how you noticed that because I never would’ve on my own, but that’s so cool!

Btw i own a 2nd gen 2002 blue vest, it fully works mechanically but i have to do some stuff on it (secure spinning arm motor, replace 2/3 snowflake leds). That’s an odd example, but you’re not wrong 😂 I made a community post awhile ago (gone now) that included a blurry photo of a lifesize Santa with bullet holes in his head I randomly spotted way in the back of someone’s property in a really bad town. Well, they recently threw him over the river bank along with a bunch of other trash, and unless the water ever gets high enough to wash him away he’s just gonna sit there and rot away forever. It’s wild to think about all the places Gemmy items have made their way to around the world…

I find these spinners a little overrated but that's probably because of my annoyance with the prices they go for. I prefer them to the new versions which I genuinely think are overrated, especially the Frosty and Rudolph versions.

I want the version that has 1 song. Even though this is a cool series I honestly take bigger interest to series like Frogz, Dancing Hamsters, Movin Monkeys and Wildflowerzzz and even more obscure/unknown series like the Blinking Flirts, Squawkers, Crazy shakers and Fabbage patch traditional, in fact I'm generally more interested in the rare unknown items than really popular items like this.

I used to be very interested in spinners, but I’ve been a lot more interested in the more obscure/non talked about series, I think there really interesting and definitely do deserve some love. The ones you mentioned are really neat series that I really do like.

Yes, yes, and yes lol. I kinda collect everything, but I try to limit myself to having only a couple things from each series so I can actually have some variety in my collection rather than focusing on one specific series. That’s why I sold the 1 song in this video. To be honest, I’ve been really into TL Toys’ old stuff lately, that company is so underrated. But, no matter how overrated snowflake spinners are, you have to admit they are really, really cool lol. I can understand why they’re in such high demand.

I did replace the speaker, though I think I forgot to mention that in the description. But, I’m sure I just grabbed whatever I had laying around, it might not be on par with what the original would’ve been.

I see what you’re talking about, but like Snowy said, ToyLover uploads every item he owns (which is a lot thanks to constant secondhand store trips, eBay, Mercari, Amazon, and of course, people like Christopher S) so it’s no surprise you will see items you already have knowledge on. But sometimes the stories on how he gets these things fixed are pretty interesting and he obviously knows this and wants other people to hear about the crazy experiences he has to go through in his descriptions.
