Great stuff...Absolutely fascinating. Great skills to engineer a precision instrument. I'd be interested to know how accurate the head is? Your head has similar features to the facetron which is also made of aluminium. Most Aussies view the Facetron with it's Aluminium head to have too much flex. Mind you, all the Australian Faceting Machines tend to be over engineered, less bells and whistles but designed to robust and highly accurate. The latest Halls Faceting machines made in Australia in Queensland has a 6 month waiting list on it. They cast their heads. My mast is 20 mm. It's like yours but thicker, and I have virtually the same height adjuster ( which is a simple design). Easy to use and easy to clean. From memory water goes into your quill. Facetrons have the same issue and a splash guard need placed on it. I was speaking to a gem cutter and he said that the water was getting in and rusting his steel dops, seem to be design flaw in the facetron. I'm also getting a 96 index wheel made up by a local engineer as I have only a 60 & 64 index wheel. It will cost a bit ( as it has to be made of stainless steel, so it won't rust and wear out, so he says), so your lucky to make yours. I'll have to watch this vid several times to absorb it all. Once again, you should be proud of yourself, great effort.

Thanks a lot, man! Interesting to read about the flaws of professional faceting heads. In Austria (not Australia ;-) it's terribly expensive to get a facetron or any other professional faceting machine, having high shipping costs from the US and customs. Steel is for sure the material with highest quality, so I'd prefer it over aluminium. Though the machines to work with steel appropriately are a different price level. Height adjustment is indeed simple and effective. I bought already some linear cnc axes and stuff, but I don't see the big benefit so far.
@VintageTimeGems6 жыл бұрын
Yep, the same here in Australia the Facetron commands huge dollars. There is a Australian faceting machine called the "VJ Faceting Machine" and costs around $7000. Yet the Hall's for less than half the price is winning the Australian gem cutting competitions. So it's not about the price of the machine it's about the skill of the gem cutter. I hope you make more videos. There is not enough of us on youtube that make vids about gem cutting,or faceting machines. Cheers

Hi there, I hope you are doing just great. My mate, have build any other Head/s? If so, would you please share it with us. You have done a fantastic job and it is admired. Cheers.

You need an unlock/lock feature for mast head and quill rotation. Also doo stick alignment pin ¬ch. Make sure rotating head backwards and upright does not hit mast.

Brillient. Did you save any money ? I have been looking at a VJ for around $6000 AU. I think a reasonable lathe would cost about 2000 or at least get the local machine shop to do some could work for about the same cost. Well done on the work.

Thanks for your reply greatly appreciated it, just a quick question as I don't want to take up your time. The calabration sensor on pin 4 digital input on arduino mega board, is this going to a sensor of some type, ir sensor or something else, and what input.pins, I just can't get calabration to initiate, that's my main question, love it if you could answer that for me, also just one last question is the touch on just one wire to pin 5 from what, and 22,23,24 digital output where are they going, really sorry about the question, It would really get rid of this headache I have thinking about this, you are my only hope, any info would be much appreciated. So happy you replied. Please, please 🙏

Hi Ares, thanks! I fully agree with your remark about using a different (harder) material. I already did order steel discs that I want to use instead of aluminum :-) But I will stick to the transparent sheet as have more detailed lines, which I can't engrave in this quality with my mill.

How is the turnnion axle (?) attach to the chuck? Just tight fit? Or welded?
@GemWorks6 жыл бұрын
Hi Walter, these 8mm shafts are a tight fit, no welding. Luckily I have a drill bit that resulted in a fit, so that I needed light hammer strokes to push it in. The hole I drilled on the lathe, in order to get accurate perpendicularity. KR, Peter

I worry your mast isnt thick enough. Solid steel mast on my machine is 25mm and still some flex is observed

Might be. I'd think that beside the mast flex can arise in other spots of the arm as well, e.g. the junctions.

@GemWorks5 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank, basically yes. But it would need an extension as dopping does not work for diamonds. And in general diamond faceting is done with handpiece faceting machines, which also are differently dimensioned. So practically I most likely will not try a diamond on this machine. KR
