From the makers of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm! The long-lost Gen 13 animated movie, AI-enhanced into HD and with audio editing to remove the horrible buzz. It's a straightforward Gen 13 HD remaster, but it's WAY more watchable than the other Gen 13 English movie versions on KZbin. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoy it! The Gen 13 animated movie from 1998 stars the likes of Alicia Witt as Caitlin Fairchild with Mark Hamill and John de Lancie, and is directed by Batman The Animated Series director Kevin Altieri. Due to rights issues it was never aired, and the only surviving copies are poor VHS transfers with buzzing audio. I used AI enhancement software and my own audio editing to create this HD remaster. It's not perfect, but it might be the best we get for now!

I love Mark Hamill as both Luke Skywalker and The Joker. They even got Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers in here too, also John De Lancie best known for Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Can’t believe Disney released this originally at some comic book convention in 1998 then they scrapped it after hearing Jim Lee’s Image comic studio, Wildstorm was bought by DC.

You should know this movie did actually get a legit release on VHS in Australia. The quality is very good, because it's a PAL format cassette, and the packaging says on the back that it is copied directly from a digital source. When I met Fil Barlow, the character designer for the movie, he very kindly drew a sketch of Caitlin Fairchild on the blank side of my video cover. He also showed me lots of his original artwork that he kept from the production. Fil is a super nice guy, if you ever get a chance to talk to him at a comic convention he's full of interesting stories about his work on Gen 13, Godzilla The Series, Extreme Ghostbusters and many more great '90's animated shows.

Man we really deserve a full series of this. I think back in the 90s it was a lil too hardcore and we were too young to make a difference, but being an adult now?! Dude i LOVE this shit and I think it would be WAY better received. If only it could keep this same animation. I love how dark it looks and how fluid it is. This style is perfect the way it is without all the modern updates to animation that they'd use. If i could showrun anything, it'd be bringing this baby to the public consciousness and making more people know about it and making a full series. This movie is definitely a solid proof of concept!

Dude I'm making a D&D campaign for this (using the 3rd edition BESM book to make the characters) and I'm gunna have the players go find the missing kids who will all end up either still in casples and when released and trying to evacuate them the captive kid awakens or Ivanna actually succeeded in making loyal awaken ones and the players have to fight them and convince them to be good. I think that idea would make a fire TV show sequel to this movie! :D

because originally Wildstorm was dark, way darker than mainstream DC they tried adapting it but they toned it down to the point where they wanted it to be dark but not too dark and this is what you got. I mean Wildstorm is the publication that gave us all Team 7, a Vietnam War black ops team, Grifter, Deathblow etc. Just look at WildC.A.T.S. the animated series.

@@TVHead003 Can't trust the Big Name Woke studios for sure but there are a lot of small, independent studios that would be far better suited to stay true to the source material. The biggest potential hurdle is for one of these smaller studios to work out copyrights/trademarks/etc with the original creators of the comics & the studio that made this video. As long as this remains untouched by the Wokist Cult I think we'll see something eventually.

@@Eyembooks The animation is very similar to Bruce Timm’s art. Yes DC purchased Wildstorm when Jim Lee sold his own Image comic studio, but when this movie was originally released by Buena Vista pictures(Disney), Disney decided to shelve it because they didn’t want to market it to a rival company which is Warner Bros./DC comics. This was before Disney bought properties like Marvel, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. Both Star Wars and Indiana Jones are Lucasfilm properties, and Mark Hamill best known for Luke Skywalker and the voice of The Joker voices Matthew Threshold in this movie. John De Lancie who voices John Lynch is also Emperor Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s cool for the Gen 13 movie to have actors from Star Wars and Star Trek cause I enjoy both franchises, I like the original Star Trek better than the The Next Generation and the other spin-offs that came after that.

The story of why this film was never released officially in the US is convoluted. Basically, a LOT of animated shows never get home video releases because A) the owners of those shows don't think there's enough interest -- Hollywood doesn't want to bother releasing shows on home media that will sell well under 1million copies!; and B) a lot of these shows have complicated rights issues because of companies get sold and paperwork making the determination of who owns what difficult. What happened with Gen13 was that it was released as the bubble was popping on Wildstorm in particular. Gen13 had a very brief shelf life as a popular comic. It was a popular mini-series but the monthly itself was not sustainable and crashed quickly. This movie was out after the peak of the comic's popularity. Another interesting thing involving ownership and rights.... Wildstorm, the publisher of Gen13, was sold to DC Comics by its owner, Jim Lee, in the early 2000s. In exchange, Lee took up a role as a creative director and later leadership. (He's a terrible non-leader, btw. DC has been operating on autopilot for years now. They've been doing all sorts of questionable things that have damaged its brands.) Guess what? DC Comics is owned by Warner Bros. DC's fiercest competition is Marvel, and Marvel is now owned by Disney! Prior to Disney buying out Marvel circa 2010, Disney somehow had the rights to Gen13. They OWN this movie!!!! They just don't want to market it ESPECIALLY NOW after they bought Marvel. Disney is in no mood to help WB or DC. Why they didn't sell this movie through Touchstone or create a new label to sell it, I have no idea. By traditional Disney standards, this is NOT a movie they can sell because it's volcanic with the nudity, language, smoking, and graphic violence. Uh-uh! Why Disney didn't just sell the film back to Wildstorm or another video outfit is another mystery. Disney has a lot more unreleased films and old TV shows they don't know what to do with!

love that classic hand drawn computer colored animation. This definitely got some special touches, it's not just the standard warner brothers direct to video animation style and execution down to a budget. there are a lot of stylistic elements mixed in here, and in terms of production value, there are more moving elements in each shot, more perspective changes, and more creative use of background animation. also many different lighting schemes for each character, each of which would require an altered color pallete for every lighting scenario. A lot of extra work went into this. although the quality of the animation isn't as high as mask of the phantasm, which had to look good mastered in 35 mm for theatrical screening.

i dunno. all the cartoons today are fairly cheap and goody. I'd be happy if someone pointed out a contradictory example, *without referencing anime.* but it would be great if we could get the animators from _The Maxx_ and early _Æon Flux_ or at least some animators that took as much pride in their work as those did. i really don't want to see any "grim adventures of the teen titans gravity house for wayward mortys", or "ronin jack and Harley Ivy's time for adventure in the fallen gravity boondocks" with production exported to Thailand or wherever they get their cheap labor these days. actually _Primal_ was really decent, my buddy was watching it when I dropped by and I thought it was _turock,_ and really enjoyed it when i watched the whole series. i think the key would be to get JS Campbell and Jim Lee to head up art production

This is just another perfect example of disney putting profits ahead of fans. "The movie remains unreleased in the US to this day because Disney as the copyrights-owner considers it a commercial for a rival company, DC, since DC owns the comics the movie was based on. The movie was released and sold in Europe and other markets, however" quote from imdb.

I enjoyed this despite the two villains being absolute idiots. They go to the trouble of making super-powered highly trained teenagers and have no contingencies to actually contain or deescalate. They don't care about their own soldiers, clearly, but they still attempt to kill Caitlyn when she murders them in self-defense.
@NekoinaBox2000

THe comic was this way too, the villains aren't meant to be bright, they thought they could just mind control the 3... In fact, their goal was to just get them to go super, no matter the consequences... If you think about it, they won in that way. Matthews goal was only to get a worthy opponent anyway, why would he want contingencies?

So this was their attempt at providing an X-men alternative, complete with a Jean-Grey, Colossus and even Magneto characters. Overall, nicely done, but I think I still prefer the original Xmen. Thanks for uploading - excellent quality if you upscaled and cleaned up from a VHS copy.

Great movie, just wished they had given Rainmaker a place in the story! Her place across from Caitlyn really was the driving force behind the comic imo. Their competitive spirit really vibed with me, but damn is this such a great find. I didn't even know this existed, thank you so much. This would have been a real hit.

Every time I watch this, I feel like I'm seeing the American equivalent of Akira or 80s-90s version of Invincible.
