This is one of the best videos on how to replace front wheel bearings on a Gen 2 Prius. I'm not sure how this fell so low in my search queue. Thumbs up. Thanks.

the KZbin overlords carpet bombed my last channel. I've been slowly finding my old videos and uploading them again. Thanks for commenting. KZbin overlords like comments :)

Yup. I'm making my mechanic watch it before doing the work. The other videos on youtube are too vague and confusing.

Dang, this was excellent. I definitely don't have the hand strength for this job, though. Appreciate all the detail, the format, and the humor. Great job!

Video really helped out. This worked great on one side of the Prius (Passenger), but the drivers side was so frozen on that the slide hammer wouldn't work. I had to pull the entire spindle and put in a vise to hammer the hub assembly out. Also, the part numbers changed to start with 57; the last 3 digits are still the same. Hub bolts are 14mm not 13mm.

Also, if the driver-side front door is opened while a front caliper is off, you are screwed. I got my bearing out. I would suggest going to a hardware store and buying 4 to 8 M10-1.25 x 35mm bolts to use instead of the ones that were holding the bearing on. If you feel you need bang on the bearing with a hammer or punch put one of these bolts in the hole you might be banging on to keep the hole from deforming. If the bearing base is coming out crooked, you might not get the base out. Take one of your short bolts and screw it into the hole that is sticking out the farthest and bang this side back in. I had to switch bolt holes using my slide hammer to keep the bearing base somewhat level as it came out. Thank you for the video. It was extremely helpful. My fingers are fine but my back is killing me.

I just finished this job on my 2009 Prius with 158k miles on salted Michigan roads. Unfortunately, the slide hammer method didn't work. I had to take it to a machine shop to have it pressed out. They used over 20 tons and still had to apply heat.

Excellent video. I believe I will try this exactly as shown.

Using a basic wrench to lift the axle nut pimple was something I needed to see. Taking off the 4 bearing bolts before taking out the entire knuckle was smart. I used a sledge hammer to knock out the bearing resting on two jack stands but it required taking off the knuckle from the lower control arm and strut. Neither way is wrong or right. Just different. Giving the axle a love tap before putting it in avoid having to take everything apart again if you accidentally let the axle slide too far forward. Oh... And never start the Prius with the caliper off the rotor 😢 trying to figure out why the axle is making noise at the transmission because trying to put the piston back in is so hard you end up buying a new one. 🤦♂️💰

It’s those Quality Control Inspectors that make the job so pricey.

For anyone attempting this repair using this video: Autozone no longer carries hub puller 27037 as of the date on this comment (1/8/22). It has been superceded by hub puller 57037 which WILL NOT WORK on the prius. There is no enough room to tighten the lug nuts.

Well fuck. What then?

@@pinpon163 I bought a slide hammer from harbor freight and it pulled the hub apart. After 7 hours of using the slide hammer, the bearing still wouldn't budge (I live in VA, not much salt here). I rented a bearing and hub puller from Autozone and even though it took every bit of my strength (I'm a 6' tall 20 something Male) on a 25" breaker bar, the hub puller forced it out easily. I recommend you use that tool from the start instead of a slide hammer.

I agree with the comment below! This is def the best video I have found on KZbin after watching what seemed like a billion videos! Great job man! Also the voice clips where hilarious I laughed a little too hard!

If you live in a rust area, consider leaving the speed sensor on the knuckle and just unplug it from above the wheel well. The bolt that holds the speed sensor to the knuckle will almost certainly be totally seized and it's so small, I broke mine with a half turn of a ratchet and had to go to the junkyard to get a new one.
@KCDW832 жыл бұрын
I had to do one a week ago. I skipped the slide hammer and just took the knuckle off and used the hydraulic press. I suggest this to anyone doing them if you have access to a press. Just remember to figure in an alignment on the job.

A must when doing this job. Isolate all the key fobs so they will not get in proximity of the car. If the abs system activates with the caliper(s) open air expensive things happen.

Would disconnecting the battery be enough?
@patr10t7622 жыл бұрын
@@jaredcrist8560 Yes, but make sure rear hatch doesn't close. If it does you will either have to crawl through the back seat or put 12 volts to the jump posts under the hood to energize the hatch release.

Great video man I have to wonder if your method will work on my 150,000 Wisconsin salt road miled bearing

FYI I’m loving the word *miled* as an unused adjective

I did my brother in law's. His was in salt soaked Iowa roads. I would imagine similar to Wisconsin. It was a MOTHER TRUCKER! I was able to do it but next time I'll be pulling the entire assembly off and pressing it off.

I've read that if the struts are detached to do this job that the frontend will need to be realigned. I Will try this method to save some $$.

I watched another video where the guy wrapped a towel around the slide hammer and swung the towel instead of using his hand on the hammer. Seems it would save your hands.
