I strongly believe wheel bearing & axle problem comes from you hitting potholes & curbs. I always try to find a smooth pavement for all 4 tires. My co-worker's wife vehicle had a rear axle problem from her hitting the curb whenever she makes a right turn.

My 2004 Camry with 104k miles suddenly started making a sound that sounded JUST like your Toyota Highlander. It was like a weird kinda clunk but the clunk happened at an even pace. Sound got worse with speed. Turning it to the left made it clunk less. Going to my mechanic tomorrow to get it checked out and now I'm armed with this information. It never occurred to me that that initial grinding noise from a wheel bearing that is SLOWLY starting to go bad was something I actually thought was "normal" when I was driving in the freeway. Glad I went directly home after I heard it start to thump/clunk like that. Thank you!

Awesome! Glad I could help ya out. Keep in mind a cv axle can also make sounds like you said and sometimes multiple issues can be happening at the same time (wheel bearing and maybe now a cv axle too). Good luck!

When he retired, people would often drop by with car problems noone could fix and he would throw on the overalls and sort them out with a smile. He certainly installed in me the love of working with my hands and that is something I am actively doing with my own kids - who at 12 and 14 are almost the only kids in Sydney without smart phones and computer games. They are also the happiest and most active kids I know! My kids loved helping their granddad change the oil in the car and would help with all manner of jobs, including changing the shock absorbers on our 4WD! What I wouldn't give to have another day with him. He would have loved your channel and again, big thanks for your help. David

Thanks for the details. Ive watched many videos on wheel bearing replacement and what to look for and your video is one of the most helpful I have watched! As a woman, we are often taken advantage of, being told other things are wrong and someone always asssuming we have no idea what we're talking about. When I get mine fixed, I will know what to expect and look for. Once, I had my brakes replaced at Firestone a while ago and two days later, they were grinding again. I took the car back to the shop so they can actually fix it right the second time, and the guy actually admitted to me that they didnt use the best brakes on my car when they "replaced" them the first time(as if I wouldn't notice, smh). Ive owned over 15 cars so far, so I have come to learn a lot over the years lol. But anyway, thanks for being so detailed! ❤

My 06 Highlander had the ABS cover perforate from rust which caused the bearing to seize. It nearly brought me to a stop. I limped home and replaced both sides, packed the cavity behind the ABS sensors with grease, and it has been fine for a few years. Thanks for sharing!

So the noise that occurs when driving - is it going to be a constant sound? Cuzz what i hear when i hit about 45 mph kinda sounds like a little more of a thudding noise and it seems to be in sync with the rotation of the tires.

The frequency of the thudding noise will determine if it's a speed dependent sound. If it speeds up as you get faster than yes it could be. It could also be an issue with your tire. Thanks for the video. In my quest to do my own general auto maintenance, I rotated my tires using the spare because I’m not sure of the proper jack points of my car to use stands. Anyway, all went as planned and in the process I discovered several loose lugs on two of my wheels. I have been experiencing a shimming while braking for over a year thinking I had warped rotors. Had that checked by a mechanic friend and he said my pads and rotors looked fine. After the tire rotation and tightening and retightening my lugs to specifications my shimmying while braking is gone. Evidently I had loose wheels. This is why I want to continue to learn and do this myself. Even a very experienced mechanic didn’t think to check the lugs/wheel.

I’ve been trying to tackle a strange vibration problem on my 2003 Ford Ranger. I replaced every suspension component front and rear, ball joints, sway bar components, and all four brakes have been rebuilt and replaced. Soon after it developed the vibration issue between 45-55 mph, leading me to think I had a driveshaft issue. I always thought that bad wheel bearings would let you know they were bad by making a squeaking sound, in my case they make no noise but the two front wheels have slight give when shaking it, EXACTLY like this Toyota here. Thank you for this video. I’ll be getting them replaced next week.

This is a good way to check. I'd like to mention that side to side play could be from steering, I think you mentioned that. Also noise isn't always an indicator and neither is feeling for play. That will get you to 99% but, a dial indicator measuring for runout will get to 100%. Need my local safety inspection mechanic to watch this. I had two vehicles in need of an inspection. My truck, which DID have a bad wheel bearing that I knew about (part was on order) and they missed it. It was bad too. My car which did not have a bad wheel bearing they said did have a bad bearing. I took it home, I got out the dial indicator and a print out of the specs in the repair manual and made a video showing it wasn't bad. Popped the wheel back on, but took it back, but said it was fixed and they passed it.

You're right, sound and play isn't always present but eventually they will both be there. If you have trouble feeling the play, a dial indicator is not a bad way to check for it. I have never used one on my diagnosis' though, they are pretty obvious. Especially when my customers roll with them for weeks before bringing it to me. Thanks for the watch!

Well, he did miss 1 thing and that is that the wheel w/ the bad bearing will usually be hotter to the touch than the rest of the wheels after a short drive...that's another way of confirming a bad wheel bearing is u take a short drive maybe 10-20 miles and walk around the vehicle & touch all 4 wheels in the center...the one with the bad bearing will be noticably warmer/hotter to the touch than the rest of them ♨️

Beautiful video, thanks, but i did all the checks on the wheels no play what so ever or noice apart from the pads a bit, yet i still hear it really loud inside when driving. Any advice? Take the pads out and check that way so if any noice it is that wheel?

Thank you. Great video. The situation that is annoying though, is right when the bearing starts to go bad, so it sometimes makes such symptoms, but not all the time. When my right front bearing was going out, it made that growling noise ONLY when I was turning left in traffic circle at speeds. When I was traveling in the straight, it did not make that noise. Reacted to the 3-9 / 12-6 push-pull test. Movement was barely maybe 1-degree, but it moved. Spinning the wheel while up on jackstand? Again no growling. In any case, after that bearing change, no more growling noise when turning left in traffic circle. Fast forward 2 years later. Now I suspect the rear right bearing is starting to go. 1 time out of 10, when turning left in traffic circle, I hear the growling noise. Not reproducible every time. Just roughly once in 10 attempts. Does not react at all to the 3-9/12-6 push/pull test. Drives me nuts…

I have a related question. My rav4 only seems to make a sound in the rear right wheel when I make left hand turns. It's quite loud and the faster or sharper I turn the louder it gets. A sort of uneven grinding, almost squeeling noise. I'm not sure that I hear a noise while driving straight that gets louder with speed. If there is, it isn't any louder than typical driving noises. There isn't any noticeable play in the wheel when I jacked it up or any noise that stands out above the break pads. (Same on the other side, I tried them both for comparison) Does this still sound typical of a wheel bearing issue? Maybe early onset? Awesome video by the way, I appreciate the effort you make to bring out the sounds. I will be checking out more as I try to do as many of my on repairs as I can.

My 2010 Prius had speed related wheel roaring noise at about 45 mph - worse when veering left. Neither rear wheel had any loose play, but the right one spun more freely and had that roaring sound. Good clues!

My 2011 town and country is that way, too. No play in the wheel at all. But it's a wheel bearing. Starts at about 40MPH, gets worse as you go faster, gets worse if i swerve left, goes away if if I swerve right.. front right bearing.

Great video, thanks, but often there is reciprocating noise when driving with no play with the wheel raised off the road. Remove the rear wheel, caliper and brake disc and simply rotate the bearing hub by hand . If the bearing runs smooth as silk, like new, it's fine. If the bearing feels a bit 'dry' or a little rough though not necessarily graunchy, it's time for a new one. On fwd bearings it's a bit more difficult because of the driveshaft. The only way to confirm is all of the above plus remove the drive shaft (a bit of a pain) and rotate the bearing hub as per the rears. I had three slightly rough bearings on my Volvo C30 - tested by hand, but none of the three Volvo specialists I visited spotted this, blaming tyres, the road etc. They missed a worn driveshaft too!

My 2015 versa had the left bearing replaced a year ago. Now I'm hearing clicking at low speeds with the windows down on the right side. My mechanic who I've gone too for everything for years changed the serpentine belt. I told him to check the bearing. The belt was worn anyways. He doesn't think it's the bearing. Maybe the brakes have too much dust. It's making a lot of whirling noise at high speeds and goes away when I tap the brakes. I'm still leaning to bearings

Usually wheel bearings are replaced in sets because when one is worn out, the other is usually needing to be done too ( same amount of wear). Dust on brakes isn't a thing but worn out brakes is. I would check for side to side play in the wheel when it is lifted up and then you'll know. Also if the noise is speed dependent, it is a good sign of a bad wheel bearing. Good luck!

Put it in the air after the test drive and put your hand somewhere near the wheel bearing on each wheel, be careful not to get your finger stuck around the wheel, and spin the tire. You'll feel roughness as the wheel spins. In theory you can also use a infrared thermometer after a test drive and shoot the center of the knuckle around the wheel bearing and if a temp reading is very hot you have a bad wheel bearing in that knuckle.

Another trick for isolating which wheel the bearing noise is coming from is have someone in the car on the hoist, get the wheels spinning and carefully reach above the wheel and hold onto the coil spring, part of the strut. A bad bearing will vibrate through the strut into the spring and the vibration difference wheel to wheel is very noticeable.

Good tips, I recall when I was a young guy diagnosing rear wheel bearing issues the noise was a big clue but if one put the vehicle off the ground and ran the car in drive then applied the park brake if rear wheel bearing was bad it would chatter and vibrate too. That was with drum brakes not sure if it works the same with disc brakes.

In your opinion, what would cause a left driver side wheel to wobble from say 20-40 mph, then wobble/vibrare again between 60-70+ mph, but not have much wobble or vibration at all between 40 - 50 mph? The tires on the front are a bit old, so I'm thinking that left tire is just worn down unevenly more than the right, perhaps being severely out of balance or something. What do you think? It sounds more like an out of balance wheel to me. You can check the play in your wheels and if there is none, it's probably a wheel balance issue. Sounds like you might need new tires too. I have great videos on both of these if you're interested. Cheers!

Hrmmm...hard to say over a message. Try to isolate when it happens and make sure it's not heard at slower speeds. If it never happens until 30 minutes of driving, it could be the start of bearings or possibly a slightly seized brake caliper that is not backing off or even tire damage like a ply separation with heat. Are there any other symptoms like slight pulling to a side or is it speed dependent? Have you done the wheel test for bearings with it jacked up off the ground?

I'd been told in the past to rock the wheel up and down to determine bad wheel bearing and spin the wheel to listen for the grinding, but to rock side to side to determine bad tie rod. How would a bad tie rod would act rocking the wheel side to side, or was I just told bad advice? I know to look for the broken rubber boot. Thanks again.

The tie rod is what turns the wheel when turning the vehicle. If there is play/wear in the tie rod, it will feel loose when you rock the wheel left and right. I just put out a great video on this, you should watch it. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!

While any amount of play confirms bad bearings, a lack of play doesn't disprove bad bearings. You can have bad bearings without any noticeable play. I had already assumed I needed to replace my bearings based primarily on the sound and also on vibrations felt through the steering wheel. But concerns over whether I could safely drive the vehicle led me to jack up the trailblazer to see just how bad it was. There was NO PLAY and the noise that was so loud above 20mph was nearly inaudible by spinning the wheel. I went ahead with the bearing replacement anyway and it was indeed my problem. Bad bearings. So I thought that might be useful to keep in mind.

Yes you are right Rob, hence why I showed the road test to hear the bad bearing noise. Most diagnosing can be done with a road test ( also test which side by loading/unloading while turning hard) and the wheel shake is just to confirm. Sometimes they don't make noise with just a spin test too so I sometimes use a mechanics stethoscope to hear a bad bearing. Thanks for the suggestion and the watch!

Another way to test for a faulty wheel bearing is to put side to side stress on it in a vacant lot or wide, unused roadway. The vibration from a faulty front wheel bearing is also often felt as a vibration on the steering wheel. The noise doesn’t always remain at all speeds and can disappear at higher speed.

Yeah thats what I do. You can usually tell what side its on by turning back and forth as you drive. The noise comes and goes as you sway back and forth. Noise when you sway right means left bearing bad, noise when you sway left means right bearing. I find it hard to tell by just listening while driving straight.

As a professional technician I can verify that these are the best methods to check for bad wheel bearings. I see people all the time get the stethoscope out and have someone drive it in the air, usually there’s no need with wheel bearings.

My mechanic did just that today with the stethoscope. He said he "thinks" it's the wheel bearing, but not positive, as it is a very unusual sound. Of course, don't want to spend the money if it is not the wheel bearing. Is the stethoscope an inaccurate way to diagnose bad wheel bearings?

Thank you for this. I have a weird rattle/grind sound that you only hear at 51 -54mph…I slow down to 50 and slowly speed up and then it comes back…only lasts like 2-3 sec. If I let off the gas it stops..I’ll use your tips to diagnose if it’s the bearing.

Ok cool, then its a brakes issue. Squeeling is the pads are needing repaired but a grinding is metal on metal. If the pads were changed, I would suspect they were installed wrong. Did they grind before the pads were changed? Were the rotors changed? Did you change anything like rims or suspension components? You can also try braking on with the parking brake to isolate if it is in the rear or in the front. Parking brake only operates the rear.

My friend checked my wheel bearing by a driving test. As we drove down a smooth road we drove over a short hump in the road. As the car momentarily lifted and came back down, for that brief .moment the grinding noise stopped. Diagnosis: A bad wheel bearing.

My issue it only humms at 30+ mph no grinding only a humming like I need to shift to a higher gear but I'm in top gear and when I slip it in neutral while costing at 55mph it has no effect on the sound. In fact if I'm costing down hill in neutral it get very noticeable humming sounds just like I'm in a too low of gear but I'm certain its not the transmission. The drive side does have minute amount of play when I perform the Shakedown test but when I rotate it there's no grinding

Great practical vid! If there is premature wear on the bearing thats hardly audible you can spin the wheel and hold your fingertips on the spring. An almost to fail bearing will bring some springvibration

Thank you so much. That was so educational to a non mechanic. That's what was wrong with my car. A nice boy at the tire shop diagnosed for me as he was doing an alignment. For me a clunking sound was heard whenever I did a particular low speed turn. It was inconsistent and was misdiagnosed as a suspension issue so I'm hoping this fix will do the trick! These highlanders are effective with lights like this but polishing this plastic won't work needs replacement! I know trust me!

Never polish foggy or hazy headlights, it'll only make it worse over time. You have to sand from ~300 grit to knock off any wax, polish and oxidation, then work your way up to ~1000 grit. After that, wet sand at 3000 grit to buff out any scratches. Then you can add a headlight UV specific clear coat to protect the headlight, and fill in the remaining scratches.

I wasn't sure if i had a failing wheel bearing or not as i could only hear a faint whine and rough roads drowned the sound of it out but luckily found a smooth road and the faster i went the louder it got. Now i've got to see which one it is and then have it changed.

Yesterday I picked up my daughter's Ford Kuga after the routine service-book service. I had mentioned to the guy that there was a rumbling noise when driving and it's loudness increases with speed. I said that I think it's gotta be some wheel bearing issue. Ford did the full service but obviously did not check the wheel bearing. They charged just over AU$ 2300 and the noise is still there! This is Australia's FORD !

thanks bud. i definitely have atleast one bad wheel bearing but im getting noise from the pads too so im having a tough time narrowing it down
