Footage of the announcement by the government of Zimbabwe of the appointment of General A.L.C. ("Sandy") MacLean, the former Rhodesian Army Commander as Head of the New Zimbababwean Military Hierarchy.
Transcript of the statement by Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Minister of State Security:
"I wish to announce that in terms of the constitution and with effect from the first of August 1981, the Prime Minister has appointed Lieutenant-General A.L.C. MacLean to be the Commander, Combined Operations. And that as a condition of this appointment, he will at all times hold the title and exercise the functions of Commander of the Defence Forces of Zimbabwe, in the rank of General. Which means Lieutenant General MacLean is now full General. Lieutenant General Rex Nhongo has been appointed to succeed General MacLean as Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army and Lieutenant-General L.K.Z. Masuku has been appointed Deputy Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army. These changes that have been made have brought about now that the integration operation is coming close to permit a clear cut chain of command to be defined."

General MacLean died on Thursday, July 18th 2019 at the age of 87, in Harare.

One of the best things that happened to the Zimbabwe Army is that there was some continuity in the structure of the Army after the Bush War. This enabled the army to have a clear working template compliments of the Rhodesian Army. It can be recalled how a single Zimbabwean Para unit with air support was able to stop a division sized force from capturing kinshasa in the late 90's

Those were the early stages of war and the rebels were not organised. There was no time for planning instead what they wanted was to topple the government of the day.

The military still retained much of its professionalism into the 90s. Except for the special units created by the Marxists like the 5th Brigade to kill political opponents. While coups are not good things, the military did right to get rid of Mugabe and make way for his successor, Emmerson Mnangagwa, the man speaking in this video. Wonder how well the land compensation plan will go. It's the right thing if done right. There may be hope for a post Mugabe Zimbabwe... if they can keep the 40Faction of dingbat lightweight socialists under control. Zimbabwe is a nation in need of healing. Not because of colonialism or the Bush War or any of that rot but because of the evil machinations of the Mugabe years. Ethically Mnangagwa isn't much better than Mugabe but he genuinely seems to want to get the nation back on track economically and in expanding its relationship with the Commonwealth again.

Yes professionalism that contributed to the pitiless massacre of tens of thousands of unarmed helpless Ndebele men women and children. Burnt alive in houses that were torched. Mugabe’s finest hour.

@@mikendlovu970 The rebels had underestimated the comparably smaller units of Zim troops landed at Njili airport however it was one torrid week of fighting August 1998 and in that para unit were a number of ex Rhodesia serviceman well intergrated into the new army. Under and of then Maj Gen. Nyambuya on one side and late Marshall Shiri. Maj Gen James Kiberebe of Rwanda who was also on the same side with the rebels had been calling the shots albeit at a distance to the west of Kinshasa

The facial expression in General Lookout Masuku was evident enough that very soon it will end in tears, he didnt seem to be enjoying the proceedings right there
