One of THE most beautiful and logical designs for a spacefighter. You can see where the Starfury got its inspiration from.

The elderly actress who played Granny in the trailer park is Meg Wyllie. She played the head Talosian in Star Trek TOS.

Well, it took me a while to notice that I had seen the previous upload, and so I wrote my comments then. 😊 But I can't tell what is missing now, that you had to edit out. So that's a good edit job right there! 😎 Bye-bye for now and namaste! 🙏

The ending makes it look like Alex and Meg are leaving Earth forever but given how fast the spacecraft are they could easily visit on weekends . I'm sure the Star League would give them a star car of their own to use.

A great movie, and such a great performance by Robert Preston as Centauri...always great to see reactions to it on my favorite channels. You guys should definitely react to one of Preston's other great performances as Dr Finegarten in the terrific Blake Edwards comedy...S.O.B. from 1981.💯👍

@@infostorm618 Very true...but that one is also a musical...and I am not sure how R Knights feels about musicals. LOL They are not everyone's cup of tea. But I will say that The Music Man is a musical that even a lot of people that don't like musicals actually quite often like. LOL

As a kid, The Black Hole (1979) a Disney sci-fi action suspense made a huge impression on me. I saw it in the theater at 6 years old. I even had action figures from this film. Oh man, Space Camp & The Explorers are excellent.

I remember seeing an article when this comming out. I think it was in starlog from March 1984. It told how this was the first movie to use 100% computer generated images graphics. Extra note Centauri's car was in Back to the Future part II. When the jeep is coming in for a landing. It is parked at the curb.

I remember reading about this movie when it was in pre production, computer graphics magazine and 3dfx magazine I think. First cgi space ships. For me the story was pretty solid and some life lessons. That and I’m an Alex as well and at one point worked at a trailer park. It did feel like this movie

Don Bluth once stated that you could show a child nearly everything as long as there is a happy end. Remember when in many animated Disney movie the parent of a main character dies? Sure, it messes you up a little, but it's just a movie, it's easier to bounce back, but at the same time it prepares you for it in real life. Not saying a real death in the family won't hurt, but being prepared for it can lessen the blow. A blow that will come sooner or later.

The movie is fundamentally based on the then rumor that the air force placed video games to find the best potential pilots, essentially a recruitment tool just as depicted. Lol, that’s so insane but it made sense when you were a gen x kid. And to be fair, it’s not like it was easy to research the issue back in 84.

This was the first movie my family rented after buying a vcr. We couldn’t afford to go to movies so this was actually quite a treat, a full movie without commercials in much higher quality than broadcast tv. Fwiw, the fx were as obviously fake then as they are now. It was advertised that it was all cg as sort of a selling point. Fun fact: test audience liked the “Beta” Alex bits so more were added. That’s why he’s got an obvious wig.

What would be super sweet about a good modern made Last Starfighter video game is you would start off in the trailer park playing the video game, and you'd have to get good enough at THAT game to win then for Centauri to come down and get you and take you to the real ship. Plus once you train a new class of pilots it now becomes a tactical space game as you command a squad of Gunstars, then a fleet.

This movie and the book Ender's Game were possibly influenced by the urban legend of _Polybius_ which was supposed to be an arcade game that showed up in 1980 and was rumored to be super advanced for the time, and created by the government for a variety of reasons, including possibly as a recruitment tool for the military or to test mind control on the players. 😂

CGI as we know it today did not exist at the time this movie was filmed. The Gunstar ships, Kodan ships, etc (only 27 mins of screen time) were created using the Cray X-MP Supercomputer, which was the world's faster computer from 1983-1985. Also, the Starfighter arcade game was built solely for the film, and was never available commercially. Atari had planned to release a version based on the movie, but upon seeing the finished film, Atari abandoned the project.

There was a tabletop mini-game and eventually tabletop RPG that I played. The mini-game was simply a hex based map tile set that was randomly assembled of the asteroid battle. Not overly complex, but fun. The RPG was not particularly engaging as they had so little to pull from. The supplements came out too slowly and it died on the vine. Once I became a more experienced gamer, I was able to overcome the derth of material, but by that time we had moved on from that genre.

There was a game that meant to be based on this movie but it got caught up in delays, mergers & other issues ultimately resulted in it getting shelved. TBH I would love to play this game today with those visuals. Next in the old movie watches is Enemy Mine (1985) very similar feel (as in production) to this one & is a great movie. Onward & upward (hate when movies that have been uploaded for months get hit with strikes)

There is photos of the film makers inside the computer and the computer had a wrap around bench that was used to make the CGI. The Crays were in limited use with most going to NASA or major banking groups in that time. They also had to fire one firm for the CGI that was producing better images but was estimated to take over 20 years to render the needed shots. The cgi was downgraded by a factor of ten in detail and this is one film an restoration of the vision would be good. With a second movie could have his brother and a restored Starfighter Corps under Alex. Could also play it in a period of bringing Earth into the Alliance.

kids are way too protected today. studios make everything too safe aswell which is why movies from the 80s and 90s in many respects are alot better when it comes to story and imagination. i watched all these type of movies when i was a kid and i grew up fine. the only time i took notice of movies if there was any nudity in a PG movie (this was before there was a 12 rating here in the uk) This movie gave me massive ET vibes. if you liked this may i suggest you watch STARCHASER THE LEGEND OF ORIN which is a 80s animated movie that borrows heavily from star wars
