Which would mean she has never ever truly been physically intimate with anyone. She also doesn’t know if her attraction to Deckard is genuine or because of her memories from Tyrell’s niece.

The replicants have 4 year life spans yet their emotions only appear towards the end of their lives. They are essencially children try to comprehend the mortality of their existance and the madness of emotion but only have a tiny amount of time to work it all out. Roy's final act in one of widly regarded cinemas greatest monologues (that seem to have been glossed over in this video.) Roy saves Deckard after finally understanding his mortality and how precious life is. The film is a tragedy. None of us ask to be born yet we have to face our existance now we are here.

This film, and the book, pose the questions that I think make great sci-fi. They are big ones like: What does it mean to be human? What makes us human? Can something not a "real" human being be a human? Deep questions like those are all in Philip K. Dick's works, one of the reasons they are so great. Another movie adaptation of his that you might like is "A Scanner Darkly". It features Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson, and Robert Downey Jr. You'll recognize others, too. It's a trip.

Sci-fi noir, I love this film. In the book the replicants are machines as I recall but in the movie they are genetically engineered humans. Deckard and Rachel is a sketchy scene but Deckard is a slave catcher/executioner, he reallt isn't the good guy in this film. The escaped slaves/replicants are just trying to stay alive and are killing the folks making and enslaving them so I'm Team Roy. Rachel is messed up. She is questioning everything she's feeling because as she said at th piano she doesn't know if what's in her head is her thoughts and feelings or how Tyrel's niece would be acting. Deckard is pushing her to stop the self-doubt but noir protagonists are usually sketchy a-holes like Deckard. There is an old 60s movie that came out a couple of years before the book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' called 'Creation of the Humanoids' which has a lot of similar themes to Blade Runner. It is very campy and 60s stiff acting but an interesting story with a lot of ideas similar in theme to Blade Runner.

My take on Roy saving Deckard's life is that Roy knew he was dying. Their lives are pre-programed in their artificial genes; as I understand it they are artificial and superior humans and have this life limit not to replace us. They live 4 years and then they die like in a day. Roy knew he was out of time; his hand started dying and he drove a nail in both for adrenaline and to force his biology to enact repairs, and my guess is that he didn't want to die all alone. He also wanted to tell someone about his life before he went, someone to remember him, and perhaps .. perhaps in Deckard clinging to that ledge he saw himself clinging to life and actually felt sympathy. Rutger Hauer was one of my fav actors, RIP. Regarding Deckard; if he is a replcant (I know, won't tell. Someone else probably does.) it would make sense for higher ups in the police to know in case he went rogue. The final cut is the best cut. The longer one is just slower. The original have way less dreams so the mystery is not explained. Other cuts are just minor variations on these in my humble opinion.

1:08:36 That response right there? That’s yet ANOTHER reason why the original theatrical release with voiceover is superior to the Director’s Cut. It may be a prettier movie, but it’s time we face facts - the Ridley’s vision here minus the voiceover FAILS to tell us what and why things are going on. Without the narration, much of the context for the various actors motivations and the social texture of the settings they exist in is lost. The Ridley shows us a lot, but doesn’t tell us nearly enough. The questions you guys have I see A LOT when new viewers START with the Director’s Cut. One quibble about the original theatrical releases though: in the various Director’s Cuts the scene in the 1st Act of the movie when the blimp is moving overhead advertising going to the colonies, the audio is SO MUCH CLEARER and a bit longer I believe. I wish I could cut that audio _back_ into the original theatrical version…

Original was released in 1982, not 84. They got Joanna Cassidy (Zora) back over 30 years later to help reshoot her death for this cut as the original was clearly a stunt person in a bad wig. Harrison Fords brother was also brought in as a double to improve the confrontation with the snake seller. They changed the audio with the captain as originally they said 1 replicant got fried, so for a long time there was a continuity error. Whether Deckard is a replicant or not is still debated. Gaff certainly implies Deckard is. Roy knew he was about to die so he probably showed an act of mercy to show replicants can be human too. 2049 by Denis Villeneuve is great, particularly visually and with the music. Will you get answers or additional questions...There is a TV series coming next year. Definitely watch The Hitcher (1986) to see Rutger Hauer in full on villain mode. Vangelis is probably best known for Chariots of Fire theme, though 1492: Conquest of Paradise theme is my personal favourite.

With the question of the test about the turtle on it’s back the answer should have been that you would turn it over and without hesitation. The giveaway was that he asked a question about the situation and not immediately answered even if he said that he wouldn’t have turned the turtle over. The test is a way to test the response time. For humans they would have immediately answered the question. Replicants only having a short life span have a limited experience with it and this forces them to hesitate on the questions. Technically this is one of those movies where the characters don’t actually have to do anything because the replicants would have died anyway.

Bladerunner actually reaches backward more than it reaches forward. This is not the same question of whether a sentient machine (like Data of Star Trek) should be granted the rights of humanhood. IN Star Trek and other science fiction, there is still a real difference between a machine and human, even if we grant that machine the rights of a human. Bladerunner reaches back to the concept of enslaving other humans by denying their actual humanity, creating different classes where no difference actually exists. Deckard's narration about Bryant at the beginning of the theatrical release makes the comparison explicitly. At the beginning, Deckard sees replicants as mere "machines." The movie chips away at Deckard's concept of the difference between humans and replicants, inch by inch. Memories, photographs of the past, emotions, empathy, the desire to live. The Voight-Kampf tests empathy...but has Deckard lost his empathy?

Alien and Blade Runner are part of the same universe. A very well hidden detail seen in the Blu-ray of the film "Prometheus" clearly suggests that the film, and by extension the universe of Alien, takes place in the same as that of Blade Runner. This is a letter written by the character Guy Pearce (Peter Weyland, the billionaire patron behind the scientific exploration of Prometheus), explaining that his mentor was an individual who was a master of creation of synthetic life. There is no doubt that Peter Weyland is referring to Eldon Tyrell, the all-powerful CEO of the Tyrell Corporation, behind the creation of the synthetic Replicants populating the Blade Runner universe. In lines 4 and 5, he directly refers to the headquarters of the Tyrell Corporation, located in the City of Angels, Los Angeles, designed in the shape of a pyramid. At the time, Ben Procter, the artistic designer of Prometheus, confided that the filmmaker wanted to ensure that the two corporations became one. An idea for which the director would have been very enthusiastic, but which did not come to fruition. There is also another easter egg, well before that of Prometheus, appearing on the special edition of the film Alien. It contained the service records of Captain A.J. Dallas, at the head of the ship Nostromo. It was stated that he had worked for the Tyrell Corporation.

1:08:10 "This movie could be a deep dive" There have been books written and there are semester long college courses dedicated to deconstructing just this movie. Something to get you started: Eyes and Jesus... *Eyes...* The first shot: "LA 2019"... One short of 20/20. Dystopian sci-fi is all about mankind's shortsightedness... The second shot is the first shot reflected in Holden's *eye* The VK machine is a high tech *eye* for spotting replicants. It does so by shining a red laser into your *eye* Some characters have glowing *eyes.* It's only the replicants, including the owl. The replicants find Tyrell by first interrogating they *eye* maker The repliicants have perfect eyes, Tyrell wears coke-bottle glasses In lieu of memories the replicants collect photographs. A photograph is a *visual* replicant of a memory. Deckard has a zoom/enhance machine in his house. He takes the snake scale to an electronic microscope kiosk. He uses devices that are replicants of *eyes* superior to human eyes, to search for the replicants The replicants favorite murder technique is pushing in their victim's *eyes* And Roy's iconic monologue begins with "I have *seen things..."* *Jesus...* Cautionary sci-fi about artificial life/intelligence warns against "playing God" Heavenly music plays when Deckard takes off in Gaff's spinner, as if there is salvation for those who can rise above ground level. Tyrell's office is a vast luxurious space in an otherwise claustrophobic city. It's they only daylight scene in the movie. The one time we see the sun is outside Tyrell's big picture window. It's still obscured by skyscrapers. Deckard asks him to close the shades and he puts the sun away, like an object he owns. If Tyrell is playing God, then Roy is Jesus. It's no coincidence he just randomly grabs a dove to release into the heavens when he dies and that he stigmata's himself to keep himself alive for those last few moments.

The different people involved in making this had their own views on Deckard being or not being a replicant so if anyone gives you a definitive answer take it with a grain of salt. Personally I hate the idea of him being a replicant because it ruins a lot of the contrast and self introspection on what it means to be human. Also, Mike would absolutely fail the Voight-Kampff test. And another reaction and more expansion on Julien's fetishes, definitely a fembot kink there.

JF Sebastian was the reason the replicants were dying. He had some defect in his genes. 1:07:48
