Flexibility, to me, means having the freedom to plan my work schedule (within reasonable business boundaries) and set aside time for personal activities. It’s not about blending work and personal tasks, but rather about maintaining clear boundaries-focusing fully on work when I’m working and keeping work out of my personal time.

The thing about wfh is it means i get to clock out on time. I've spent years going home near mid night and going to office the next morning. Being able to finally go for dinner with my husband has been a nice change.
@EvaL-w3y3 күн бұрын
I think some people are taking "flexible" to the wrong level. Some uses "children" as a reason, for being away during office hours. Then started making calls, messaging others outside of office hours when they have settle their kids. But what this means is when it is time for others to rest and end the day, they have to start answering calls and messages from people who 'step away' during office hours to fetch kids, etc. I felt this is extremely unfair to people without kids. When they have finally worked hard throughout the official hours, they still have to OT to answer calls, messages from these fathers and mothers. So flexible hours ok, but not at the expense of inconveniencing others.

People dont understand how expensive and cumbersome it is to replace a good employee. So if she is getting her work done well, why not extend the flexibility. At the same time if an employee is under performing and goofing off then thats a decision that needs to be looked at

I had Gen Z coworkers. As a millennial, I turn off my camera when I’m not presentable/multitasking at home. I usually go to work because I’m more productive there. My younger coworkers have been more able to get work done while at home/doing flexible hours. All that matters is the work deliverables to me. I honestly think people younger than me are way more mature than me at their age. So it’s all good.

No wonder some of us millennials have to slog even while taking official paid leave! Sometime I wonder why I am given more work, working all the time during weekends, paid leave, sick leave, perhaps I was being made to do more work for people who choose to go on holiday during a fake sick leave. 😢 Anyway, what organisation should do is Be Fair! Stop rewarding those who can do work with more work! Even if those who are supposed to do work are not doing their work, it is outrageous to expect the hardworker to cover more work!

I'm proud of my generation. We need to prioritize our health and sanity while we deal with work. It's not natural to sit in a chair, in a place without sunlight, for 8+ hours 5 days a week. Once I get my chance for hybrid and remote work, best believe I'll be at the beach with my laptop and on cruises lol.

Nothing wrong with working wherever so as long as the work gets done. The line is drawn however in trying to test things for the sake of testing what you can get away with when clearly we know that focused work is your best work. If you're not able sit down, get meaningful work done for 2-4 hours, THEN go to the nail salon afterwards during the day BECAUSE you did the big tasks already, it means you either don't respect your job because you hate it or you hate your employer or you have ADHD. It's one of the 3. Life happens sure but this is not an emergency and if you constantly have nonsense like this pop up as an excuse for emergency you don't deserve the job for the lack of discipline in time management. There's 24 hours in a day, business hours are within 8 of them, figure it out.

The rise of hybrid work is redefining work-life boundaries, especially for Gen Z, who are challenging the status quo. 💻✨ While we adapt to these changes, let’s also remember to support local Singaporean small businesses that help us navigate this new normal. 🇸🇬 From ergonomic home office setups to cafés offering productive workspaces, every purchase not only enhances our work-life balance but also strengthens our economy. Who else believes in backing local while embracing the future of work? 🙌

Look, the fact that she felt bad about being caught on the same plane as her manager tells you that she herself knows it isn't right to be doing what she was doing. Wanting employers to be flexible is fair if you're talking about dealing with last-minute things or emergencies. But going off to do your own things while working, on a daily or even weekly basis, is just not right. But that's just me.

Because there's 24 hours in a day and they purposely chose to do it during a meeting? You can't figure out your time to do it before or afterwards? Or do your deep work block then go get the netty petty before or afterwards? We're testing boundaries that don't need to be tested because it's already figured out. Just because you can multitask doesn't mean you should be for appropriate social behavior. When you're getting it done in front of your employer it says you don't care about the job or that you work for them or you have undiagnosed ADHD. If you don't want that job to care enough for giving the 15, 30, or 60 minutes in meetings then go change jobs or even careers so you're doing work that you like enough to respect other people's time in the meetings. Especially when you're not the boss or owner of the company who's paying for you to be a fool. When you're self employed you can get away with that mindset because you get held responsible for the behavior in court.
@welutha6 сағат бұрын
This is wrong on so many levels but mostly for security reasons. Most companies have very strict protocols around that. You cannot use your laptop wherever, connect to unsafe public wi-fi, random people should not be able to eavesdrop on your meetings. I would not want to talk to a friend who'd call me from a nail salon because I don't want my private business discussed in public. If a colleague did that I'd kick them off the call immediately and report them to the companies cyber security department. In most companies this level of carlessness would be grounds for dismissal.

I don't think video call is necessary at this point. If you listen to a meeting and able to answer and deliver your point in the meeting, regardless on video or not. That should be good enough.

Dont just pin it on the “gen Z” or blame it due to “technology”. It really sounds like an excuse. It all boils down to each person’s own understanding of accountability, responsibility, work ethic etc. At the end of the day, it comes down to MATURITY. Whether you are mature enough to make proper decisions and prioritise when approaching work. And no, I’m not Gen Z.

Don't agree with the CEOs reasoning saying if you take a sick day you need to be sick. The important thing is that you took the day off if you needed to. What a person does with their time off is their business. A company cannot control you and tell you what to do with your personal time. Wouldn't work for her.
