I think genZ likes vintage and retro, because it often represents the (perhaps more affluent ) style of their grandparents. I have kids who are 23 and 29, and they are eyeing everything old, neat, and handmade. I was a lot like that too, when I appreciated the 1920’s style of my grandparents in Europe. I was able to bring a few small pieces back after my brother and I disposed of the estate. Weird story: my mom, grandma, and grandpa were highly esthetic people and had a lot of little things which I would have kept to decide upon later, or sold, had the estate been in the US. However, transporting a garage sale worth of goods to the US would have been prohibitively expensive, and I am aware that we have enough stuff as it is. So my brother and I decided to do a Native American type potlach: we set everything out on the sidewalk with the right death notices and an invitation to adopt an item in our family member’s memory. Out house was on a bus stop , and when the commuters arrived, there was a commotion. First, nobody could believe it was all free (we were too busy deciding on 3 apartments and 4 generations worth of stuff to supervise a yard sale, and we had only a week. We were overwhelmed by stuff and a funeral and lawyers, and giving the still-good bits away seemed sensible.) I heard kind words from some, but mostly I saw peope come back, stand over their pile like protectors of a great treasure, and call for pick-up from their cell phones. I have no regrets, though. You can’t have everything and it’s important to curate. I am glad that the old, often chipped antique pieces went to people who were excited about having them.

Loved what you said about bringing back vintage Vegas hotels. I’d love car companies to bring back classic car bodies with modern tech and safety features.

Garrett you’re spot on about vintage. When I was cleaning out my parents’ house, my Gen Z son (1997) took furniture, the dining room table, lamps, and even dishes. All of the pieces were well made. It really surprised me but also warmed my heart.

Hi Garrett. I am a GenXer who is in the process of moving into a 150-yr old farmhouse. Not a "modern" farmhouse, a real one! I have been binge-watching your videos as I pack my boxes and plan my new living space, and I cannot thank you enough for the wonderful advice, the wisdom, gracious attitude and generous spirit you provide. You encourage people to find their true identity and develop their own style, and that is a wonderful message. You are helping me stay chill and sane right now!

You brighten my days as I unpack in a new-to-me home! My style is definitely lodge. Actually, if I could move into a real chalet I would in a heartbeat. I’m not complaining about having a home on a river to decorate, I just want to bring some lodge aspects in and not end up with a beach theme just because I’m near water. Those of us caught between generations are struggling and appreciate your talent!

As someone who is gen z, I definitely agree with your first point. I personally agree with the fact that my generation is wanting an aesthetic as opposed to a style. Heck, I’m kinda like that with plants. Although I love the aesthetic, even I admit that it can be overwhelming and hard to put into a specific style.

Good Morning Garrett, Thankyou for today’s vlog. First of all you look gorgeous, second much love to Arden baby🥰 You are the most realistic, relevant and the most respectful person. I totally don’t get it why people write hate comments. Maybe they should invest time in watching all your episodes and know you a bit more better. Probably that’s how they will understand and value your fun banters and a real design class:) The moment when Garrett gears up to give a piece of mind : junk & maximalism, the parent in him is in full fledge mode, and I connect with it 😂😍 You have a wonderful day and I like to see these various gen vlogs and at times I feel we all overlap each other in some aspects😇 Much love, stay well!!

Garrett, love the way you always balance the good aspects of a style choice with the bad; example: you know why someone may want to embrace this aesthetic, but they’re doing it wrong. Also, your husband is spot on about bringing back the Las Vegas iconic hotel names: mix the glam of the originals with the glam of today ⭐️. Obvious to see why you make such an excellent & stylish couple 🥰🍾

I admit that I really don’t understand the maximalist idea at all. To me it’s just overwhelming clutter. I’m sure there’s some kind of rhyme and reason to it but it’s lost on me. I’m not really into the minimalist thing either, but at least I understand it more. I guess I’m just kind of stuck in the middle between both of those.

Is it just me who thinks that he is much less critical and strict towards GenZ than to GenX? And Garrett...please do a video about dark academia!! I (GenX) have heard of it, but not seen it yet it any "real" home. How can it be included in a more minimal/ light space? You mentioned that at the end of your video, but it would be interesting to hear your ideas and see a few examples.

I think gen z has still got to learn more and make more mistakes before they really figure out who they are, but I think I was nicer to gen x than millennials😂 love dark academia but it’s a bit of a niche style, maybe a video about it could be cool🤔
