Dre is not known for his skills as a rapper, rather as a producer. Even early on he was primarily a DJ. That’s not to say that The Chronic isn’t extraordinarily important to the history of hip hop, because it absolutely is (and was my introduction to rap, as a white kid in Australia). But the catalyst that defined the beginnings of full blown rap in the 90s, was the break up of NWA and the solo artists that it spawned; Dre, Easy E, and Ice Cube. They set the tone for what rap would become in the 90s… The rebellious anthem Fuck The Police set the tone for what would eventually become Gangsta Rap.
