@@RoofusRoof19it isn’t bait. The methods they use are actually good. They make sure the paintings they “vandalize” are protected by bulletproof glass, laminated in the frame, etc.. And another note, them chaining themselves to the ground represents how much we rely on the earth and need it to survive. And the big oil companies are taking that away. Obviously the only solution is to get rid of oil. Obviously a simple minded buffoon like you wouldn’t know this. So tell me, did their methods not get you thinking more of climate change? No! Why? Because it is effective.

Their hearts are in the right place and the foundation of what they’re saying is correct but it’s obvious that they don’t actually know all that much about the natural world at large since their talking points have nothing to do with what they’re protesting for other than fossil fuels and man made climate change, everything else is irrelevant to the problem. The key issue is that humanity is the only species on this planet that has grown entirely estranged from the rest of the natural world. In doing so we are sowing the seeds of our own extinction while taking down the rest of the diverse ecosystems that make up this planet as well with our destructive behaviour and over self importance that we’ve neglected anything that isn’t human and we even neglect our fellow humans. So yes, humanity needs a wake up call but what they’re doing isn’t at ALL productive..

I wish you talked to the people actually working on changing the world, instead of only a brief mention at the end. So many topics have rational people in the middle working the best they can do forward humanity. Oceangate is one of my favorite projects that I've actively donated to. Thousands of scientists actively work and beg for funding to find new ways to clean up our land and oceans, but seldom get any media attention. Of the larger projects, the great green wall in the shara, drone reforestation, and ocean de-acidification projects come to mind, but they almost never get any attention despite have far larger impacts than anything the activists have done for climate change. To me, the people here were pretty clueless. The protestors are talking about fossil fuels, but forget that electrification is actively occurring with a large push. Also, the primary importance of fossil fuels is not energy directly, but logistics (tankers/ships), synthetics (plastics), and fertilizers. Instead of vandalizing cultural and historical artifacts, why not have a push for nuclear energy projects and better transit systems within cities? The other side felt just as clueless, probably doesn't believe in climate change, and only parrots right wing talking points.

What pisses me off is that these people don't even do basic research on the topic. It's easy to say that "We can use sun energy through solar panels - so let's just generate all electricity by them". But they don't even bother to search for information about efficiency of it, about consequences of covering huge areas by solar panels, about the basics of how the energy grid works and what are peaks of generation and consumption. As an engineer, I can tell that complete transfer to green energy is not possible due to mechanics of how the power grid and how generation and consumption of electricity works. In addition, it would need an absurd amount of solar panels due to their relatively small efficiency (solar panels 20%, fossil power plants which also use heat for secondary purposes is up to 90%). On top of that, green energy can be produced effectively only in particular regions and in particular seasons. If we take solar panels - we should consider that it produces light only in a daytime, we should consider angle of solar beams, clouds, winter seasons, dust in the air. It means that actual solar panels efficiency reduced to a few percent. Another aspect - power grid works that way that we need precise amount of generated energy to correspond to the amount of energy that is consumed at exact second - green energy is not suitable for this. Batteries wouldn't cut it because of low capacity, hard maintenance and amount of rare metals needed for them, considering that it's mined mainly by slavery and hard to recycle. And lastly - excessive green energy damages the environment even more badly than fossils as it changes heat circulation, wind forces and river flows. All of these problems applied to each type of green energy generation. All in all, happiness is in balance. When we apply green energy in particular region, where this approach is efficient, in particular scale that is not harmful to environment - it's perfect. At the same time, in modern state of power grid, it needs a support of another types of generation plants to run it properly and so that this system will have a maximum efficiency. I believe and hope that efficiency of green energy and batteries would be enough some day, but it's not the case for today's technologies. On top of that, if green energy is a way to generate energy from "air" that doesn't require any other spendings on fuel and stuff - wouldn't entrepreneurs just use that "free money" opportunity? If it were so easy as it appears - green energy companies would overthrow other companies in a blink of an eye, wouldn't they?)))

Sure, solar and wind have intermittency and reliability issues and hydro and geothermal energy require specific terrain, but there is bioenergy that can be used almost anywhere and ocean energy too. Nuclear is also an option in a lot of areas, ones that preferably aren't earthquake/tsunami prone. Yes having a completely 100% green energy mix isn't possible everywhere right now (and possibly still wont be in the future too), but it is in a lot of areas. Power grids need a baseline energy source that is reliable (24/7) and there are a few options for that: hydro, nuclear and geothermal. From that, solar, wind and ocean energy should be added to the mix to provide the energy needed during peek demand (mornings: 6 to 9 a.m. and evenings: 4 to 8 p.m.). Solar energy can be used during those time periods and wind should be used where its the most efficient (geographically). Finally, the most important thing now would be to have coal and oil plants progressively closed in favor of gas where renewables are too expensive to build. Gas has a much higher efficiency and emits less CO2. And in countries that have the funds for it, coal, oil and gas should be replaced with a mix of renewables. Otherwise, hopefully technlogy helps make renewables more efficient. PS: Yes I included nuclear in renewables even though I know it technically isn't but I did because it doesn't emit GHG.

Per year the top three are USA, (wikipedia lists it as a country) the European Union and China. All of which are by no means third world and have plenty of acess to clean energy such as wind or solar, but in the USA especially there is heavy lobbying from massive oil companies and intense glorification and greenwashing of oil, and while the means are questionable at best which these protesters use you do have to see the intent.
@DrunkenDove
@DrunkenDove 3 күн бұрын
@@valclipped1507 No energy is clean energy, there will always a trade off. In the US as of 2023 90% of all solar panels, regardless of the technology used, ended up in land fills including their toxic materials like heavy metals of Lead and Arsenic that leech into the environment. Wind turbine blades are extremely time consuming and expensive to recycle so both the US and UK just toss them in the land fill once they are replaced. Leaded Gasoline would cause heavy metal partials to breathable and stay in the air causing varying degrees of heavy metal poison and effects. Unleaded oil products (Jet fuel, Gas, Diesel, Kerosene, etc) are well known to cause plenty of issues in their own right, but an additional trade off is that there are so many products made using the by product when turning crude oil into these fuels. Ice Chest, Paint Brushes, Tires, Nylon Rope, Fan Belts, Hair Curlers, Glycerin, Synthetic Rubber (Very much needed in this era compared to natural rubber production) just to name a few. This leads into Nuclear Fission, and testing of Fusion. Nuclear fission reactors provide such a large amount of energy compared to the effects and waste products it produces. However that waste does take time and care to resolve where it should be kept until it can finally be moved to a long term holding area where it will take generations to finally become non-radioactive. All in all it really comes down to the trade offs which is why I didn't even mention coal as the energy density vs the pollution cost and it generates power similarly to Nuclear does not make sense. There is no one solution, unless we find a true "miracle" fuel with no hazards or effects, until then doing a diversified source of energy is the only way to decrease all side effects slightly rather than mainly into one or two large side affects. In reality based on political structures around the world not everyone will move over to "cleaner" energy standards. China and many other places still use large amounts of coal to the point that coal mining is ~10-11% of Australia's GDP.

@@zfritz268that’s only if one day everyone decided that fossil fuels would just stop existing which is unreasonable. The reason why there has been no action to take out fossil fuels by governments isn’t because they’re the only way to prevent “billions” from dying, its because it takes time and commitment (and breaking contracts with big oil companies) to transition towards better alternatives that can work alongside of a smaller amount of fossil fuels. Like sure, billions of people rely on fossil fuels, but that’s because it’s the only energy source available in their society and they don’t have control over what form of energy they consume.

Probably not, they don’t exactly like losing profits. You do realize modern forestry replants every forest they cut right? I live in a forestry area, one that coincidentally makes paper bags. The local company owns large swaths of land that's sectioned off into plots of 100 or 200 acres. So they heavily manage each plots, cull diseased or damaged trees. Thin the forest after 10 years for pulp wood for bags, and at about 15 they cut down the big trees that were left for lumber. Then they come in and replant the whole thing and repeat the process. This also makes the forest company land a defacto wildlife management area since the forest isn't developed for decades at a time.

A vegan diet yields a drastic reduction in carbon footprint compared to a diet with substantial consummation of red meat. This is mainly due to that feeding cows to produce meat is very caloric inefficient compared to eating vegetables directly, as well as methane emissions form the cows during their life time. In an assignment i had during one of the courses on my master's degree in industrial ecology at NTNU, the calculation's showed that by converting to a diet with no animal based protein i would reduce the climate impact from my meals by roughly 50% and the land use impacts by almost 30%.

Her model of saving the climate is factually not possible to implement, just as with Just Stop Oil. I'm a flower power tree hugger myself, but I understand that money talks in this world and there needs to be logical incentives from a financial, infrastructural and cultural perspective, which differ depending on which part of the world we're talking about. An entire population can't be vegan in a food desert, anarcho-capitalists won't care at all about implementing stuff that will only cost them astronomical sums of money, countries like Brazil and China decide our future, the farmers who destroy the environment prioritises food on the table before some abstract long term goal. It's easy to get to feel like a hero by sacrificing very little in the western world and people forget that their situation is very unique worldwide in terms of having the privilege of getting to care about stuff like climate and veganism. PS: most vegan products are fertilized using either manure, urine and/or byproducts from the meat industry, so if one looks at the entirety of the production chain, exchanging all of that for green fertilizer would take an unfathomable toll on the environment. Nothing is intuitive (and seldom entirely Kumbaya) when searching for the least bad way to support climate, environment, ecosystem services and biodiversity

That tweet at the end speaks volumes to me. Are you actually doing something about a problem you see, or do your actions mostly just make yourself feel better? Its like I always say, "If you want something done right, complain about it until someone else does it for you."

“The world is on fire” is a wild take. There’s been 4 elements from the beginning of time on the planet: earth, water, fire and air. Sounds natural to me tbh.

You should ask them, why don’t they go live in the Amazon forests, an island or the Sahara desert where there are no big oil companies and Starbucks and see what they say then.

These criminals just need to face the law. Simple. -- I'm curious about who pays them.
