I personally like thick gels. I find that they work best for my hair and I like super strong hold. I absolutely love the not your mothers hard hold gel. I have been using it consistently for the last two years. My hair is medium texture so it is not fine or coarse it’s right in the middle. I personally find I need to be more careful with my curl creams so that they do not Way down my hair. I find that some curl creams are waiting moisturizing . Which is why the not your mothers curl talk cream is my favorite .My favorite combo is the not your mothers curl talk cream and The not your mothers hard hold gel.

I always had issues with refreshing until I tried the MopTop gel. I'm a little limited with products due to fragrance sensitivities. I got amazing results with certain products but couldn't handle how strongly scented they were. Anyway, the MopTop gel is the only gel I can refresh with & not get stringy or frizzy results with. I can also handle the light citrus scent of both the leave-in & gel. Previously I used mousse (NYM) as my final step & it worked well but did not refresh well. My hair is more wavy than curly & lighter weight, more liquidy leave-ins & gels work better for me than creams which are too rich/heavy. If you have issues with fragrance I recommend the Jessicurl & MopTop gels/leave-ins.

I just started using mousse and gel and on the first go round even though there's massive improvements, I was still getting frizz. 99% certain now that it's a combination of not using enough gel (I have fine hair so I'm cautious with amounts) and having my hair too wet! Looking forward to trying again. Thanks for the helpful video!

Today I used a combo you recommended, curl smith shine cream ( just a little ) and the aqua gel . Came out pretty good . But I put my products in very wet hair. I’m going to change that and try your technique . Gena.. have you tried the Treluxe aloe Vera curl primer ? It’s very slippery and works great for refreshing when used on wash day . I was able to spray a little water for 3 days and hair still looked good .

I've had pretty good success with the gels I've used except for Treluxe Hi Definition Gel. I apply the serum before it. I've tried every way to use it and my hair will look weighed down and I lose curl definition by the next day. I've tried using more, using less, using it on wetter hair and using on damp hair. I'm wondering if it just doesn't work on my hair type? I have thick hair and it's medium porosity. UPDATE: If anyone else has trouble with treluxe gel and serum, I found my solution! I use Curlsmith Hold Me Softly Balm layered with the treluxe gel. It has worked so much better! I used the reflex serum mixed with water as a refresh on dry hair. I don't know why these didn't work together for me on wash day.

The strong hold gels I've tried are the Ouidad, Curlsmith in shower styler and the NYM strong hold gel. Only the NYM gel formed a very slight cast for me. The other 2 gels almost felt moisturizing. For reference, I have fine high porosity, just under my shoulder length hair that loves protein. I use a clarifying shampoo, no conditioner, no leave in. However my hair is always too soft. The curls look amazing after diffusing, but within about an hour they start falling and whatever cast i had is gone and my hair is extreamly soft. Even after aphogee protein treatments. I have no idea what to do or use. Every wash day i have so much hope though lol. ❤❤

Not a drugstore brand or a liquidy gel, but I love Ecoslay Orange Marmalade. It can be finicky, and it can give you flakes if you don’t rub it well between your hands before applying, but it’s a good one!

I have a different problem with 2 very popular and liked gels (Curlsmith styling soufflé and orange marmalade). When I apply them they have no slip for me at all, my hair feels almost as dry as paper. I always use creamy leave in or styling cream underneath but they have always been like that for me regardless of the first styling product 😢 the effect is ok and curls don’t feel dry but the application is very difficult and unpleasant. Anybody with the same issue? Is there a particular ingredient causing this?

I have my routine down pretty good. I would say I probably only have one challenge with gel- crispy ends. For context, I have fine hair with layers so the hair at the end is kinda wispy. I don’t get crispy ends often and they do soften up but they more time to break apart than the rest of the gel cast. Many times I sleep in the cast and by morning, the only part of my hair still in the cast are those ends 😂

Interesting! I’m not sure if you have layers in your hair, but opting for more of a blunt cut and no layering can help the ends be fuller if you think they may be thin, which is causing them to appear thinner with gels

Hi Gena! When I got my curly cut last month my stylist said you need your hair super wet like you can hear it “squish” when you put product. With your level of wetness before your gel do you still hear a “squish”? sorry if that made no sense 😅

Any suggestions for soft water? I had my routine down with Curlsmith and sometimes Ouidad and love those lines. However, recently installed a water softener and now my hair is not behaving the same at all and I don't know how to work with it. Curls are not curling, hair weighed down. I can cut out conditioner and leave-in but any tips on products you think could be good? In Style Shower Fixer too heavy? Should I switch to light hold gels? Thx!!

I need to research soft water more because I'm not very familiar. From what I understand, it makes hair soft and conditioned, so you don't need much conditioner or creams. The In Shower Style Fixer is too heavy. The clip where I showed my hair weighed down was actually using that gel. I used too much gel just for demo purposes. However I do like the gel but can only use it as a light topper, scrunched in after styling. Something strong hold and lower in moisture may be ideal, such as the Jessicurl Gel I showed.
