The two key themes I use are the 'implications' and 'to what extent is it an issue in modern research'. For the first, I talk about how alpha bias can perpetuate stereotypes and lead to the pathologising or demeaning of women in particular. However, beta bias isn't perfect either, as it leads to overlooking genuine differences, therefore creating inequity despite looking like equality on the surface. For the second, I discuss the role of feminist psychology in undoing decades of androcentrism, and the role of reflexivity in modern research (noting how it isn't perfect as a lot of bias is unconscious, and just because we claim to be aware of bias it doesn't solve the problem). Hope that helps. -G

could you possible mention that emphasizing differences between cultures rather than similarities (for universalism perspective) could insight conflict or hostility towards other cultural beliefs especially if they are contradicting and go against someones personal belief system?.. Could you also link gender bias to Schizophrenia as men are more likely than women to be diagnosed with SZ as women are able to mask symptoms and function adequately etc whilst men struggle with this

Yes, I think those are both good points! The first is an example of the negative implications of alpha bias. -G

@@GalbraithDoesPsych ok I thought alpha bias was only regarding gender (differences between males and females), what i meant by the point is in the video you were talking about emphasising universality or similarities in attitudes or behavior rather than differences

Ah so alpha and beta bias are put with gender on the spec, so I can see why people say that. However, it does actually apply to culture too. Alpha bias, for example, is about exaggerating the differences between groups. But, you only have to know alpha and beta as they apply to gender for the exam. Is that the bit in question 5 when I'm discussing a good thing about universalism is that it might give us chances to look for and celebrate similarities? As with all of this, there's good and bad to both sides. I think your point is good - I think you're saying that by not doing universalism (so by looking at difference or by doing indigenous psychology) that might actually exaggerate differences and maybe alienate people or increase prejudice. I can see that being the case. I hope that helps but sorry if I've still misunderstood what you're trying to say. -G

could you use reflexivity as a way of dealing with gender bias, and then counter it with the idea of unconscious biases? also could you use the fact that girls are undiagnosed with ADHD and autism as a negative implication of gender bias? so sorry I find gender bias quite wish washy - thank you!

Yes, pretty sure I talk about that first point in the video. That could apply to gender or culture. Your second point I would also agree with. People who do the schizophrenia option would probably make a similar argument. I think gender and culture is a tough one. You can use any topic to illustrate it, but I suppose it would be better if it was a 'topic of study' (i.e. something from the course). Good luck 👍 -G

I think there's every chance that might happen. Possibly on issues and debates, option 1, and option 3. Look out for 8 markers too. -G
