Jennifer Vasquez what do you consider Transphobic? People saying that there are only 2 genders?
@yeahyupp24485 жыл бұрын
Saying there is only two genders is not transphobia ITS A OPINION. Actually no it's a fact. You can't magically change your gender. It's impossible.

also this was a really cool thing to look at, rather than simply talking about the difference between sex and gender, it was stuff I'd never heard about before and provided a deeper insight

Loving this new series Jake, looking forward to more episodes. You really suit this style of slightly more academic informational videos. Also to anyone who found this topic particularly interesting, I recommend the book 'Transgender History' by Susan Striker, particularly the second edition as it has a new chapter pertaining to developments in recent years. This book does a good job of tracking the history of transgender terminology, what they mean, why they changed and how that change was taken by the wider world. Unfortunately it solely focuses on trans history in the USA but is still applicable to the UK in it's wider medical and social context.

@@JakeFTMagic Sometimes I try to find vids that affirm the science that there’re more than two genders, and then my dysphoria gets AWFUL because of transphobic comments. Afterwards, I always think that maybe I’m faking being genderfluid and/or lying to myself. 😔 so thank you

This is very interesting! I'm studying psychology and sociology at the moment, so it's interesting to compare social expectations with our understanding of gender. John Money actually worked with people who were born intersex to try and socialise them into a male/female gender role after having gender reassignment surgery. In a completely separate case, there is is the tragic story of David Riemer, which I think has always been a great example of the difference between sex and gender. Thanks for the video! :)

Spot on as always! I wish more people realised this instead of thinking vagina = girl and penis = boy. Just because some people's identity is in line with their biology doesn't mean that it's the same for everyone else. I'm pretty indifferent about my gender identity, if someone refers to me as "she/her/girl" then that's cool but it's also cool if someone refers to me as "they/them/non-binary", none of those things make me uncomfy. At the end of the day, gender is a social construct so people can identify however they like, most humans need labels in order to understand themselves which is totally okay but people who still think with a mindset of "women must be totally feminine, men must be totally masculine, there is no in between" need to stfu lmao. Also your shirt is rad af

Hey I was kinda bleh about this topic, just because it feels so basic and redundant to me at this point....and then I actually got a lot out of it. I appreciate the way you highlighted how language and our understanding of things shifts collectively, and that people who may not be supportive of something "progressive ", the shift becomes more clear quickly, through the use of language (eg. Fucking Scalia) Anyway much love, glad to see ya in the sub box always

All of the standards around reporting clinical trial data collects someone’s “sex” but reports it as “gender” so That’s Fun! (Also very occasionally there is a category of “undifferentiated” for someone who is intersex and I suspect that a trans person would have to go down under their biological sex, assuming they were allowed in the trial at all.)

Very interesting and informative video! I know I have a lack of knowledge and understanding, so excuse me for asking questions but if I don’t then I don’t think I’ll ever understand. When it comes to gender, what do you have an affliction to? As Jake said, gender is a label at the end of the day. Is it the label itself? Or is it the stereotypes of that gender that you have a connection with? I’ve asked this question before to other trans people, and I still don’t understand unfortunately. I guess it’s because I don’t really see my gender as something that defines me per-say, so the only way I define it is by what was between my legs. I understand and accept that it means more to other people, but for my own identity that is what it boiled down to. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this and a further thanks to those who respond!
@bbmusclebottom86 жыл бұрын
Tincan100 James You said that you lack knowledge, but you are actually much more intelligent than most trans people are. In today's world, the label of "man" or "woman" does not make any difference in a person's life. Trans people are attached to archaic stereotypes from the 1950s. Today, anybody can express themselves and be what ever they want to be. You do not need to disguise yourself and go into a witness protection program and live your life in fear that someone will discover your real identity. I don't know why trans people do that. It sounds like you are already smarter than that.

LOOOOOVE this video :D So clear, so accessible - yay! You might have it in the works already but you might think of adding what contemporary (well, 1990s to now) Queer Theory is doing to the category of 'Sex'. Specifically, what Judith Butler started talking about in her book Bodies That Matter, that shows how the biological category of sex is fundamentally informed and defined by dominant ideas of (binary) gender, & the ways that medicalised ideas of sex exist in gender performance.
@JakeFTMagic6 жыл бұрын

Jake, as someone who has not studied this subject at length or in a rigorous way, I really do not think you should be making 'educational' videos on the subject. I've only started watching and you already misrepresented Money's views, by saying he distinguishes between sex and 'identity', which is incorrect. He defines 'gender' as social role, not as gender identity. The psychological account of gender (i.e. where 'gender' is defined as gender identity) is fairly recent and has nothing to do with John Money.
@SikanderG6 жыл бұрын
Also, you defined gender identity as the sense or conviction of one's gender, and gender as what one becomes socially. These are very vague and inadequate definitions, and they give you the result that gender identity is the sense or conviction of what one becomes socially. Tell me: does that make any sense?
@SikanderG6 жыл бұрын
And nobody other than Tumblrites believes that sex is a spectrum. The distribution is of overlapping bell curves: it not a spectrum.

Sex isn't that biological either. At least classifying people into two categories that can't be changed is pretty social, not biological, and inaccurate too. For example, trans men, in most cases, can't be considered female.
