They start by doing their basic military training, just like all other soldiers do. Then they spend a couple of years becoming officers. It's only after that, that they start their pilot training, flying the SAAB 105 (Sk 60) for a year or so, before they get to fly the SAAB 39 Gripen.

To me, the craziest thing to think about is how a country of 10 mil. people could design, produce and field a fleet of vehicles that can compete with aircraft like Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, MIG-29, Chengdu J-10 and the F-18 Super Horet.

Also, JAS-E house the most advanced EW gear in the world. ESM receivers with interferometric passive targeting (don't need Radar nor IRST to shoot Meteor missiles at air to air targets) and GaN AESA jammer units, both with 360° horizontal and vertical (spherical) coverage. The top fin unit has GaN AESA EA capability against search radars and coms. No other fighter EW system has this capability today, this includes F22 and F35. (I know its a late response but still )

Magical! Best episode so far. What a privilege man. Mach 2+ (2000+ km/h or 1243 mph) and a climb rate of 330 m/s or 1083 ft/s. And they didn't push it at all, but maybe we'll see some serious speeds and maneuverability in a later episode. I hope so :)

What’s makes Gripen great to fly is not just that it’s faster and more agile, but the computer helps the pilot fly so he don’t have to think about overloading the aircraft. The SK60 needs constant monitoring so you don’t exceed limitations.

There are plenty of words that are translated totally out of context (some words have different meanings depending on context, other words are mistranslated because of fast/dialtectal pronunciation) which is to be expected from auto translate. I doubt it's a problem since non-Swedish speakers can understand most of it from the context.

This was an amazing episode and I feel the same; I wish I had been driven/conscious enough to become a fighter pilot when I was in their age. That must've been sooo fun and satisfying to get a first taste of aaaall the work and training/preparation they've done up until that point.
@scyphe4 жыл бұрын
Again, those flying scenes, man.... I wish I could experience that. The thing is, you'd not only have to be in very very good shape physically, you need to learn how to breathe in a special way due to the sudden strong g-forces that they experience in tight turns, loops, rolls, going full speed vertically (up/down). The JAS-39 Gripen is extremely agile and classed as one of the best jet fighter when it comes to maneuvering in dog fights. Only Russia would claim otherwise and say their Sukhoi's would destroy the JAS-39. Meanwhile even China who only use Russian fighter jets (and their own copies) says that the Gripen outperforms their SU's (they did a joint exercise with Thailand who bought the JAS-39). At the same time it's got top-notch high-tech electronic warfare hardware that is designed to counter esp. the Russian Sukhoi jets including their stealth jets. They can carry the most advanced air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles (both NATO/US ordinance as well as European ordinance) and fire-and-forget on targets up to 80 miles away. They look small with their single engine and compared to the F-22 and F-35 it might not seem competitive in any way. It was never built to compete with those planes since nations with those jets are considered permanent allies or friendly. Besides, the F-22 is so expensive that you can get 4-6 JAS-39's for the price of a single F-22. The F-22 is being replaced anyway since it's way too expensive to build and buy as well as being banned from export, and other nations (non-allies) are catching up with their own production of Gen 4.5/5 jets that can compete with the F-22. The F-35's problem is that due to it's stealth focused air frame it can't super cruise due to it's design, in stealth mode it can only hold a very limited amount of ordinance (4 internal hardpoints) inside the air frame to keep it's stealth properties and it maxes out at Mach 1.6 while the JAS-39 can super cruise and reach Mach 2.0. They were designed and built for different purposes so they are not directly comparable. Meanwhile Sweden (the only Nordic country, a small country with a population of just 10 million) have built many generations of competitive fighter jets which is quite extraordinary. The JAS-39 is superior to the F-16 and the F/A-18 in the air, both of which are still being produced and in active duty in many countries (mainly NATO countries). In a joint exercise between Norway (F-16's) and Sweden (JAS-39's) called Red Flag in 2006 the JAS-39 Gripen (first version) finished with a result of 5-0, 5-0, 5-1 against the Norwegian F-16's whose pilots are just as well trained. I'm proud of the Swedish Air Force. Sweden and Italy has joined UK in funding, designing various next-gen systems and building the next generation (gen 6) Tempest air superiority jet fighter. It'll probably take nearly a decade before the first prototype does it's first test flight but it will be the most advanced fighter when it's build. In Swedens case it's not about acquiring the Tempest once it's finished, it's about having full access to it's Gen.6 systems that we can use for a future update of the JAS-39 (the new model JAS-39 Gripen E/F is heavily upgraded with a larger size and more advanced avionics etc. After Brazil went with the JAS-39 NG/E, Canada is currently shopping for a replacement for their aging F/A-18 fleet and currently it's between the F-35, the JAS-39 E and the upgraded F/A-18 Superhornet. At first glance it would make sense for Canada to go with either of the US jets simply due to the US having such an influence on other NATO countries and it's allies while being much better salesmen (it's usually politics that decide which fighter jet a nation choose, not which jet might best fit their purposes). In this case the JAS-39 E seems to have a pretty good chance of making it. The F-35 is more expensive and was designed for an offensive role, something that isn't really fitting Canada's purposes. The F/A-18 is getting pretty old (even with updated systems) by now and more modern aircraft surpasses it in most cases. The JAS-39 was originally built for purely defensive purposes with the fastest turn-around times (10 minutes from landing to taking off again), can take off from narrow civilian roads instead of using airfields and thus able to be deployed away from obvious targets like the main airbases if an attack takes place, can sit outside in any weather for instant readiness, built for arctic conditions (which fits Canada's purposes) and due to the new engine, the added number of hardpoints, the higher top-speed, super cruising ability (the ability to stay supersonic without afterburner) and it's advanced technology where the jets have highly advanced multi directional links between jets as well as the ground which giving them instant shared information on bogies and huge areas of airspace, I'd say it's the best choice for Canada. For the money they'd have to pay for the F-35 they could get 2-3 times the amount of JAS-39 E's. Sweden have agreed to let Canada put together the JAS-39 E in Canada (creating jobs and improving aviation engineering skills), sharing of technology etc., something the US would never do. Sorry for the TL;DR level of writing, I've just been studying and comparing modern jet fighters for a while now and as a Swede I'm proud of my small nations accomplishment to be able to build a competitive fighter jet.

Great episode! To get a good view on what the Swedish pride JAS 39 Gripen (Griffin) is a capable of, you should check out a clip called "Gripen and g-force" posted by the manufacturer Saab here on youtube. That one also tells a lot about the physical demands on a fighter pilot, since it's no music, no talking, just the pilot breathing in the microphone.

You could see that the squadron commander had a Viggen patch. F7 Såtenäs used to be an attack base and part of the first strike group. They flew the AJ-37 Viggen before switching to Gripen. For a number of years the wing was not a combat wing instead focusing on training gripen pilots for all the gripen countries and operating the air force transport aircraft

Unfortunately, the automatic translation is a bit poor. JAS39 means, J(fighter) A(attack)S(reconnaissance) 39. It is an multirole aircraft that can perform all those three mission-types. Its also called a swingrole aircraft since you as a pilot can change between these tasks while airborne.

@@Syndikalisten CAS is a subset of the Attack mission. What the Swedish air force traditionally focused on was Interdiction which means striking behind enemy lines things like bridges and ammo dumps. Another main focus in the attack role was anti ship, Sweden was the first western country to get an operational airborne anti ship missile in 1961, the missile was sea skimming before it was cool.

Those of you who live in the UK and want to become a fighter pilot can also then become a pilot for JAS 39 GRIPEN, as the UK has purchased these planes. Can inform that JAS 39 is a cheap battle plan compared to other battle planes. If you compare with the F16, it costs in the air for 10,600 dollars while JAS costs only 4500 dollars for the same time. What is more exciting is that the JAS 39 GRIPEN is the only time aircraft today that has such a short take-off and landing distance, ie normal take-off and landing. This allows it to take off and land on a regular road that has a shorter straight.
