My name is Callie Rose and my mom got my name from this. My grandfather use to play the organ and sing this to me when I was a little girl.

My father used to sing this song to me and my sister when we were children in the 50's, It is indeed a beautiful song. Later a Mexican translated this into Spanish.

I think this is Gene Autry's best-ever song. Almost his signature tune and how good it is. Thanks for posting, knarf826.

When I was a Hollywood brat I remember my mom talking the KNX program manager into giving Gene Autry a spot on the program to sing this song. ... That was a long time ago. (back in the 30's)

My grandfather just past away and as I am writing this we are on our way to the cemetery to lay him to rest. My little brother is a guitar player and growing up my grandfather would always ask him if he knew Mexicali Rose. My brother never did and always shrugged it off the question. Just now he was reminded of my grandfather's question and we looked up the song. It's poring rain and we are both getting teary-eyed now that we finally heard this song. It's kindof fitting for the moment. May your memory be eternal Papou Nick! Love you!!

That is amazing! It took til after my grandfather died when I was 10 and my love for the Country Music like Marty Robbins(his favorite) really took off. He’s almost like another father to me and a kid is always looking to impress his father. After he passed it was like immediately I was learning all the beautiful songs he loved and I picked up a guitar and play too. My grandfather played and sang all the time he was great and could yodel like Hank Williams and everything. Now I just long for the day when I get to reunite with my hero in Heaven and we can play and sing for eternity!

my guitar teacher as a young 12 year old was the original back up singer and guitar player for Gene Autry. He taught me this song ad a few others. He was great person who ended living in St. Ignace, Michigan. Ted Clyde Gillmore (nicknamed Buddy was a Checkerboard and Brazos Valley boy who grew up in gene State of Texas. He had a beautiful Gibson L-5 guitar made for him in 1940 and I played it many times. My band member in High School now owns the instrument. Buddy could sing just like Bing Crosby, I think of him often.

Gene Autry is hardly known by the young in Oklahoma. He was discovered near Ardmore strumming singing what I think was a RR telegraph station. At 7, I remember this big hit, 1946. It has legs, trust me.

I was born in Mexicali, and I love pretty much this song, which is well known among Mexicali people, it is like the non-official city anthem.

....when the dove of love is winging through the blue".. ...is one of the most beautiful lyrics ever written. This song ranks with the immortal songs of country music.

Mexicali rose, stop crying I'll come back to you some sunny day Every night you know that I'll be pineing Every hour of year while you're away Dry those big brown eyes and smile dear Banish all those tears and please don't cry Kiss me once again and hold me Mexico rose, goodbye Mexicali rose, I'm leaving, don't feel blue Mexicali rose, stop grieving, I love you When the dove of love is winging through the blue All the castles you've been building will come true Mexicali rose, stop crying I'll come back to you some sunny day Every night you know that I'll be pineing Every hour of year while you're away Dry those big brown eyes and smile dear Banish all those tears and please don't cry Kiss me once again and hold me Mexico rose, goodbye

The bass sounds electric (reminds me a lot to Paul's bass in "Norwegian Wood"), but wiki says this was recorded in 1936. Was this overdubbed, or I have USS Ticonderoga and USS Missouri blocking my ears?

Gene Autry also had a very good "Amapola".

I don't like the choir that was dubbed over this beautiful original recording, and I LOVE choir backings in music, particularly country. This time it just doesn't work for me.
