What are you talking about? He has tbe BIGGEST SALARY OR MONEY in the byrds and this became a contentious issue that caused so much jealousy esp for Mcguinn. Gene Ckark received more than double because he WROTE ALL those hits. Except songs written by bob dylan

What a great selection of songs by Gene Clark, I have heard some of these previously and I ask myself how is it possible with such a catalogue of great songs as this why Gene never had the success he so richly deserved , he should have made it really big and be up there with the likes of neil young , bob dylan ,stephen stills, totally amazing.

Gene, from what I have read, had a sad combination of fear of flying and some sort of bipolar disorder. Society knew nothing about disorders like that, so people drank to try to self-medicate. Plus, he had Jim/Roger McGuinn bribing pilots to do loop-de-loops while they were in the air. Perfect storm tragedy.

John Gorman The only thing Gene was better at than writing songs was burning bridges. He pissed off the wrong people too many times. Self destructive to the core. I don’t think he ever knew how talented he really was. Hollywood is a killer.

I think Talent is something individuals often don’t see/ perceive in themselves. It’s almost always noted and appreciated by others around them. They may know they are “ good” at what they do more by the notice, accolades or compliments & opportunities presented to them by others. More likely to be the case if you come from an unassuming family background where a high social profile, high ambition or constant praise or focus for your natural talent is not mainstreamed in your family situation , growing up. Apparently Gene Clark whilst keen to take up the opportunity to join The New Christy Minstrals when they first “ discovered” him as a late teen, he never alerted his family back home about The Byrds formation & fame with Mr Tambourine Man etc, until they were well caught up in the manic cycle of touring, recording, flying , dealing with fierce fandom etc. Gene was writing prolifically, singing beautifully , a talented singer songwriter but I bet he never thought of himself as “ talented”; he just did what he enjoyed or sometimes was perhaps driven to do to survive....🤔

Whst this collection of out takes & demos show is just how wide Gene’s willingness was to not just his own material, but happy to swing back & grab sentimental, perhaps family/ personal favourites like Young Love from his 1950’s teen years, cover other’s songs “Needles & Pins”, “Jokers are Wild”or experiment with his own Eg: the compressed “ Feel a Whole Lot Better”, plus demos his “live sound”, or introduces unadorned/ unproduced versions of his own songs that latter made it onto albums eg: Misty Morning. This collection is really interesting and also entertaining. 😊

I’m thinking “Misty Morning” live in the studio maybe comes from before 1979 ? But, maybe not, if it was just recorded “ while waiting for others to arrive”..... what a gem. 💎

Yes, I love this Gene/Carla version of Jokers ae Wild. One thing, I don’t think Gene was ever “ precious” about only singing his own songs. He admired other writers and was happy to cover songs he liked or resonated with. He knew “ a good song” when he heard one.

Way too easy as a young one to be overly influenced by peers or “ what’s cool at the time”. Don’t knock yourself too hard. But having seen MCH June ‘78, I’m sorry you did miss seeeing Gene play around that time. 😔 Nice we have these recordings to listen to decades latter. I especially appreciatec being able hear Gene’s non singing voice and way of speaking captured in short snippets here. 😊

With Gram the most important Byrd and ( FBB), it took him by the soul that he couldn,t sing the first vocal by The Byrds,Mcguinn got Tamborine Man and then it was made up by the 'bossess' Gene never got a fair chance i think, but i think his songs stand over the grave, more then the rest of the Byrds: more style and psychological insight, not a one day-fly this man,Thanks for these demo's: a real treasure

ABSOLUTELY right you are. As I listen to music he's done that I never had, I'm both sad and elated that this music is still around and I love the set I have but honestly many of these songs - and the work he did in his life apart from the Byrds is masterful, haunting and beautiful. It has taken youtube to expose me to all this and to realize how many of my favorite songs he wrote or had a major hand in, in some way. (I have a black multi disc set I bought years ago of the Byrds) I think, had he lived his music would have gained even more depth in his music, become quite a force, a major player

I think Gene was the better musician of the two. I don't get the adulation of Gram Parsons, his work seems more derivative than original to me. No one compares to Mr Clark. Sad loss too soon; amazing what has become available. I saw another comment on another page that went "Is this guy producing posthumously? I keep finding more and more music of his I've never heard before". That's a rare comment and thanks to YT, true for many of us. Thank you Mr Clark.

@@truerosie Gram greatly respected what came before, Louvin Brothers, Merle Haggard, etc. He presented it in a new way that is still fresh. His writing, which was not plentiful, I admit, was pretty original and very beautiful. They were both great artists. I think Gene was more introverted while Gram let it all hang out. I wish they'd had easier and much longer lives.

Gram the most important Byrd? I don't think so. He was an important figure in country rock no doubt, but he was only in the Byrds for couple of months during a period when they losing relevancy in the mainstream. The most important Byrd would be McGuinn no doubt but that's not to say he was the only important one.

Have a look at Johnny Rogan's epic volume 2 on the byrds, in particular BIG BIO chapter on GENE CLARK. No man that's lived on this earth has been an angel. No man. That said, a few have walked among us with incredible GOD GIVEN talent. Gene Clark found his at an early age. No doubt about it. No doubt about his gift. But he was a man, and a mightily conflicted man at that. Sorry, not an angel by a long shot.

The reason Gene didn't make it big was because he refused to bend to the record companies wishes. In return they didn't promote his music. It wasn't that he didn't want to make money, but he just couldn't do the things he was asked to do, like fly all over the place promoting his records. Anyhow, that's how I see it.

That’s a nice progression ( or should I write “ regression” 🤔), back to the soul of country music circa 1950’s based more on the hillbilly folk roots of that music than the Nashville Pop & crossover that came to dominate that genre in the latter 50’s. That’s the lovely thing about music if you can keep your ears open.... track back and listen to who your more present musical hero’s listtned to in their formative years. 💖
