This song has given me chills right from the 60s. And that huge operatic final crescendo. Wonderful.

I was fortunate to see Gene Pitney in Perth Western Australia a few years before he died. His voice sounded just like it did in the 1960s, and he could still hold that 10 second note at the end of this song with no effort at all. One of the most memorable shows I have seen.

Other suggestions for more Gene reactions would include "It Hurts To Be In Love", "Yesterdays Hero" and "Half Heaven Half Heartache", but I could go on .. and on .. and on .. Thanks, Wayne

My father raised my brothers and I on this music. As a child, I loved the music and when I reached adulthood I understood the nuance and lyrical passion conveyed. It's refreshing to see a young mind touched by its melancholy and know exactly what his performance and lyrical content is conveying. Well done young lady!!!

I know Gene Pitney through my mother who had records of him. My three favorite songs by him are 'Town Without Pity', 24 Hours From Tulsa and 'It Hurts To Be In Love', oops 'I forgot one big hit from him: 'Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart'! Gene Pitney was only 65 when he died, in 2006, too young of course.

Have always enjoyed Pitney's work. But for my money, his best was "Every Breath I Take", recorded in 1961. It was one of Phil Spector's very first "Wall of Sound" productions, and featured one of the best studio background vocal groups ever -- the Halos -- behind Pitney. Definitely worth a listen.

There are of course the great rock voice legends of Zeppelin's Robert Plant, The Who's Roger Daltry, Deep Purples Ian Gillan and of course the late great Roy Orbison all of whom have mastered that special ability to grab your soul and shake it to your very core when it matters. When those vocalists sing, you wait in anticipation knowing what is coming... Genes voice is also one of those. The sense of unrestrained power coming out of those lungs at the end is unmatched to this day..Others get close, very close, but Gene just tips it...

Angela, if you like Gene Pitney and since you like songs that tell stories, I recommend "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." It's from a western movie by the same name. It starred John Wayne and Lee Marvin (who played Valance, a cruel and ruthless murderer). The song, which tells the story of the movie, emphasizes the unique qualities of Pitney's voice which you mentioned.

I hope you won't be offended by this grandfather (I'm 78) telling you that you are maybe the prettiest lady on KZbin...any man who would break up with you has to be terminally stupid...Gene Pitney was very big in the 1960s, and yes, his voice is indeed unique. Sadly, you don't hear much of him today even on oldies radio for some reason...thank you for the review, and I like the fact that you appreciate him as much as I do.
