The best game show ever. I still watch it today. Mr. Rayburn is the Master of Game show host. He, Brett, Charles Nelson Rilley and many of the guess, made the show fun to watch and be on. I was born in 1977, so I was unable to watch Match Game when it was at its height in the mid 70's, but thank goodness for Game Show Network, as I have been able to watch just about every episode from the 1973 to 1979 run. Yes, I was a big fan. There was a relaxed atmosphere of casual fun, and Gene Rayburn was what made it work. Match game was one of those guilty pleasures, and a show you didn’t want to miss. It didn’t seem like a carefully crafted production (although it obviously was) so much as a group of friends having a lot of laughs. Match Game from the early ‘70’s was fun, relaxed, risqué - and brings back a lot of fond memories...like Hollywood Squares.

Gene Rayburn took on the hardest task in comedy: being the straight man. He was truly excellent at it, because he always gave the stars their chances to shine, which is what the straight man has to do. I've noted numerous times where he could have dropped a one-liner or bon mot himself, but didn't. Not, I think, because he wasn't clever enough, but because he was concentrating on making the game work and also didn't want to appear to upstage anyone. He got his share of laughs with some of the zany physical stuff, for the most part. Or with jokes by the others made at his expense. The stars themselves also don't compete to prove out as funniest. They all have their own approach to humor, but don't show off vis-a-vis each other. And a few of the non-regulars are obviously having so much fun it's really charming (David Doyle and Kaye Stevens come to mind as good examples).

I attended several tapings in 1967 and 1968 .Between the ages of 12 and 13 years old. This was when the show was on NBC-TV in New York City at NBC Studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza 50th street and Ave of Americas ( 6th Ave) Radio City Music Hall across the street. The show was taped in studio 8H. The same studio that's has been the home of Saturday Night Live since the show began in the fall of 1975. Back then Match Game would tape 5 shows in 2 days. Back to back 2 shows and the next day 3 shows . 2 in the mid morning or early afternoon and final taping afternoon .

I went to a taping of Match game back in 1975. As a 12yo boy, I joked during the audience warm-up that I wanted to roll down the stage door stairs with Gene on the opening of the show. This brought forth a huge laugh from the audience, and Johnny Olsen called Gene out and told him "That young man in the back wants to roll with you." Gene fired right back that he wouldn't, but maybe Brett Sommers would. This got an even bigger laugh and embarrassed my parents. Brett later made a crack about it during the game, but sadly it was edited out by the time the episode aired. IIRC she said something like "That young man in the audience would blank with you."

Richard Dawson and Brett Sommers were great but Charles Nelson Rileys quick gay infused wit was legendary very similar to Paul Lynde on Hollywood Squares.. The double entendre thing was all about using the word "blank" which is used in spoken language for a profane word or in written language for fill-in-the-blank. The appeal of the show was based entirely on just that.

To call this a "gameshow" Is a serious miscarriage of term...this was a comedy, game show, entertaining ensemble!

I've heard that Charles Nelson Reilly once said, "Match Game isn't a game show, it's a social engagement." Very true.

The revamped version was the BEST. It felt like you were at a party. I read Gene Rayburn’s biography. He (along with Dick DeBartelo) was the one who encouraged “Match Game” to go in the funny and saucy version that we know of today because the original version was boring as (bleep). He clashed with Mark Goodson over this. Gene was proven right, because people think of the fun 70s version when someone says “Match Game”, AND when Game Show Network replayed the 70s version of “Match Game”, it was their highest rated show.
