I did that too. I watched it with my dad because my mother was getting for work. When Brett and Charles would give a crazy answer, my father and I would bust out laughing and my mother would come in the room to see what was going on. She did not believe how they were talking.

The best game show ever. I still watch it today. Mr. Rayburn is the Master of Game show host. He, Brett, Charles Nelson Rilley and many of the guess, made the show fun to watch and be on. They made magic. I haven't seen a game show yet come close to that kind of magic. I will always prefer it over many of the new game shows today.

I was born in 1977, so I was unable to watch Match Game when it was at its height in the mid 70's, but thank goodness for Game Show Network, as I have been able to watch just about every episode from the 1973 to 1979 run. It is one of the things that I watch pretty much every day. (It is not on Saturday and Sunday.) I just love the camaraderie between the regulars.

Yes, I was a big fan. There was a relaxed atmosphere of casual fun, and Gene Rayburn was what made it work. Match game was one of those guilty pleasures, and a show you didn’t want to miss. It didn’t seem like a carefully crafted production (although it obviously was) so much as a group of friends having a lot of laughs. Match Game from the early ‘70’s was fun, relaxed, risqué - and brings back a lot of fond memories...like Hollywood Squares.

This was always one of my favorite game shows. Gene Rayburn always seemed like someone you would like. He was likeable, funny, and had charm. The interaction with the regulars was always fun. Had a party feel to the show. Unlike shows like the Price is Right the prizes weren't really the reason for watching, it was just the fun of playing the game. And I liked that better.

When I was in college I scheduled my classes around The Price is Right and Match Game (73 on). As a student I dreamed of getting on TPIR and winning a car, which was wishful thinking. But my afternoons were spent laughing myself silly with Match Game. The chemistry of Gene and the panel was just off the charts! It's fun to see these clips because I haven't seen the show since the 70s. Match Game was truly the pinnacle of game shows!

I was 12-13 watching this show when it came on in the early 70s. I would come home from school and settle in. I probably didn't understand all the innuendo, but I loved it. A bad day was when the Watergate hearings pre-empted it--they rotated between channels in airing the hearings. I had enough of that in Social Studies class.

Gene Rayburn took on the hardest task in comedy: being the straight man. He was truly excellent at it, because he always gave the stars their chances to shine, which is what the straight man has to do. I've noted numerous times where he could have dropped a one-liner or bon mot himself, but didn't. Not, I think, because he wasn't clever enough, but because he was concentrating on making the game work and also didn't want to appear to upstage anyone. He got his share of laughs with some of the zany physical stuff, for the most part. Or with jokes by the others made at his expense. The stars themselves also don't compete to prove out as funniest. They all have their own approach to humor, but don't show off vis-a-vis each other. And a few of the non-regulars are obviously having so much fun it's really charming (David Doyle and Kaye Stevens come to mind as good examples).

I attended several tapings in 1967 and 1968 .Between the ages of 12 and 13 years old. This was when the show was on NBC-TV in New York City at NBC Studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza 50th street and Ave of Americas ( 6th Ave) Radio City Music Hall across the street. The show was taped in studio 8H. The same studio that's has been the home of Saturday Night Live since the show began in the fall of 1975. Back then Match Game would tape 5 shows in 2 days. Back to back 2 shows and the next day 3 shows . 2 in the mid morning or early afternoon and final taping afternoon .

The Match Game fascinated me so much when I saw it for the first time when I was 6 or 7 years old. I enjoyed it mainly for the music and sound effects back then, but now I enjoy seeing it on KZbin and GSN now that I'm grown up and can understand the proceedings. I have even lived out the fantasy of being on the show through some guys in California that put on simulations of every game show ever aired.

I went to a taping of Match game back in 1975. As a 12yo boy, I joked during the audience warm-up that I wanted to roll down the stage door stairs with Gene on the opening of the show. This brought forth a huge laugh from the audience, and Johnny Olsen called Gene out and told him "That young man in the back wants to roll with you." Gene fired right back that he wouldn't, but maybe Brett Sommers would. This got an even bigger laugh and embarrassed my parents. Brett later made a crack about it during the game, but sadly it was edited out by the time the episode aired. IIRC she said something like "That young man in the audience would blank with you."

@@FactsVerse Been thinkin' on this- maybe some bloopers and/or behind the scenes on 2 shows my dad HATED- Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in and The Smothers Brothers, also (and I'm sure you've done just haven't seen) stuff on Hollywood Squares? Also, what about the old-time 'Rasslers' like Dr x, Baron Von Rascke, that crowd from when Vince McMahon was an assistant interviewer who was mainly tossed around by the 'rasslers' he interviewed (before the steroids and WWF, soon to be WWE)? Just a few suggestions my friend. You have a great channel!

I loved the show when I got older. I was a child in the seventies. I was not aware until later that when they found out Gene Rayburn's real age they got rid of him. That was really sad. Since Rayburn was really the heart of the show. I was not aware of the so called dummy seat. I wonder were the ladies that were placed in that seat aware of it?

I'm 56 and grew up on this show and STILL watch it often on Buzzr .. Richard Dawson and Brett Sommers were great but Charles Nelson Rileys quick gay infused wit was legendary very similar to Paul Lynde on Hollywood Squares.. I was always pretty sure they were a little buzzed or high this confirms it.. the men would be touchy feely with the women but in a jovial respectful way.. not creepy and everyone seemed like good friends almost family. How society is so uptight and super pc now is so sad.. anyway that's a great show.. oh also the Gong Show!

Infamous continued Brett question: "I'm sorry(giggle giggle), would you repeat the question (giggle)?" Even Gene got frustrated with her after a while.

There was show on GSN called the 50 greatest game shows several years back and it had Match Game #1. The reason why it was #1 is because it was appropriate humor on the set and a fun loving host in Gene Rayburn and wonderful celebrities. The other reboots years weren’t as good as the ones of the 70s.

I remember that my dad 1973 when Mitch came first came on he made sure we sat and watched it with him, we got hooked after watching the first one. Also, when they went onto the afternoon, I used to run home from school also like a lot of people just to catch match game! When my friends and I would go to the park and match game was coming on in the evenings I told them I would have to leave and they would say why and I’d say because my dad and I watch match game together! They laughed at me they thought it was silly . But I did not care.

The double entendre thing was all about using the word "blank" which is used in spoken language for a profane word or in written language for fill-in-the-blank. The appeal of the show was based entirely on just that.

The revamped version was the BEST. It felt like you were at a party. I read Gene Rayburn’s biography. He (along with Dick DeBartelo) was the one who encouraged “Match Game” to go in the funny and saucy version that we know of today because the original version was boring as (bleep). He clashed with Mark Goodson over this. Gene was proven right, because people think of the fun 70s version when someone says “Match Game”, AND when Game Show Network replayed the 70s version of “Match Game”, it was their highest rated show.
