I've been watching reruns of this for the last three or four years, at least, and it never gets old. It was one of a kind. It all starts with Gene, the perfect host, and Brett and Charles and Richard. And all the great 'semi-regulars' like Fanny, Patty Deutsch, Betty, Patty Duke, Joyce Bulifant, Joanne Worley, Elaine Joyce, Marcia Wallace, Nipsey Russell, Gary Burghoff, Dick Martin, Joann Pflug, Orson Bean... A show like that can never be duplicated. I remember watching Match Game 73 when I got home from school in junior high, and still think of it with the 73 in the name because of that. Best game show ever, with Jeopardy number two, but for completely different reasons. For entertainment value Match Game stands alone. And quite often the contestants were very entertaining - you got quite a variety of personalities.

I remember my Mom laughing so hard watching Match Game. When it premiered on CBS the 2nd time in 1973, I was 5 years old, just starting kindergarten and I learned a lot about something I absolutely love doing and enjoy with women. Innuendo! Learned all about it from watching. I asked my Mom, why does it always seem like these questions have answers that are right, but means something different? Mom said, boy....I don't know how you caught on? You are so smart! I'm going to tell you and "carefully" explain it to you.....after Match Game goes off. She told me all about innuendo, why it is, how to use it to present something to someone or group. Also how women like it and how it adds fun and deep thought to any loving relationship. The 70's....times "teenage" years. 😀

Match Game was a show where anything, absolutely anything could happen. You tune in and Charles might FLY into the studio, Carol Burnett would invade the set, or a contestant might bend over in a two-short skirt. That random factor, the anticipation of "what could possibly happen this week?" was a big part of the magic.

Exactly what the modern versions haven't figured out. Innuendo is fun and much funnier than vulgarity. In the 70's they'd ask leading questions that would make people think something dirty, but the celebs had to work around not being able to give the dirty answer. These days they allow the dirty answer and it just isn't nearly as funny.

I swear that this show was just for entertainment. Dawson was the most consistent celebrity with matching answers. Reiley wasn't too far off but, he had his bad days. Somers got to the point where she didn't give a damn about helping the contestants win any money. She would give a bad answer using up to four cards to make her look like she's desperate to be funny. It got to the point that I couldn't stand her.The only reason that she landed on the show was due to Jack Klugman, the actor that could only express one emotion, anger, talked the producer into putting her on the show! The worst panelists would always occupy seats one , four, and six. These, also, would be actors or comedians that cared more about being glib than helping the contestants win any money. Before anyone says, why did you watch it, because my wife liked the show and I wanted to be with her!

I never got Brett Somers... I felt like she was always looking to be on the spotlight of the show, saying anything silly, commenting on everyone's conversations. It felt like the rest of the panel put up with her a lot...

She laughed at herself a lot and also laughed at the jokes of other panelists. She was perfect for the show. Lighten up and don’t be so catty.

Agreed. She seemed very needy and jealous of others getting attention.

Brett and Charles should have gone on to have their own talkshow as cohosts. It would've been a hit.

Match Game is on several times a day on the Game Show Network, it's as if they are all frozen in time. The only one I can think of who is still alive from the original Match Game is Betty White.

Don't forget about Fannie Flagg and Joyce Bulifant! 😊

Fannie still writes too. I wasn't old enough to remember the match game, but I remember Fannie Flagg wrote Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (the book), which is one of my favorite movies.

Gene was very patient with brett trying very hard to take over the show. He did get annoyed with her a few times and told her that it was his show. He or the producers must have been friends with Jack Klugman who got her on the show

Odd that $62.50 was the fee paid to anyone accidentally appearing on camera as 62.50 a week was Ralph Kramden's salary.

I miss you as well, Brett. You, Charles, Richard, Betty White. I'm more able to watch all these re-runs now that my children and grandchildren are grown & gone. Moved away. Busy with their own lives. Now, I can really enjoy the show. I even miss Gene. Him and his funny sarcasm. If one can't take a joke, they shouldn't be on the Match Game. Because Gene was sure to embarrass someone. But, that was Gene. Got to love him, as well as you, and all the others. Can't remember all the other stars names right now, but you all had some great stars on your show. The only other game show I've really ever watched faithfully was " the kissing bandit' Richard Dawson, on Family Fued. He, like you, and Betty White, and Charles, had BIG hearts. As did some of the other stars.

Brett passed away in 2007. I wonder when she recorded that.

If Brett had looked at the camera once in a while instead of just reading off of the cue cards, This would have been a lot better.
