I forget why I dislike source citations until somebody explains how to do it... Lol! Anytime that I save a source to my tree, there's the citation! Boom! Why do I have to then transcribe it? Granted, if I'm writing a family story, then I can understand citing your sources at the back of the book--like a bibleography. But otherwise, if some family member doesn't believe you about Great-Uncle Bob's marriage to Great-Aunt Petunia, you can show the record you found from Ancestry/MyHeritage/FamilySearch... and it has all the necessary information, including the picture of the marriage license/certificate---in most cases. It's only when you don't have a record and you are going off somebody else's word that family members won't believe you.

Why do I start with some of the background before the specifics? Our audience is worldwide and diverse in their experience with genealogy research. The beginning information is for the benefit of the newbies in the audience. I never assume everyone is on the same page when it comes to citations. If you decide to watch further videos, be sure to look for the timestamps in the description section of my videos. It will help you find what you need faster. Good luck climbing your family tree.

I lllooooovvvvveeee cite citations, it allows others to reproduce my research. I try to be as accurate as possible. But I struggle to get these citations written properly.

I also struggle to write these citations properly, although I go back and read Evidence Explained to see how certain citations for different records are written.

I am not against helping people get to the same resources. However, the 'written properly' is where I have a problem. There are multiple styles and some styles don't work well around the world. Thus, I prefer the forms in RootsMagic or Drew Smith's "Copy and Paste" methods. The citation is accurate and I don't worry about the style. This gives me more time to research and write.

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics: No problem. I've been a writer, public speaker, and researcher most of my life, so typos and I are on a first name basis. 😁

I just put my sources in the notes. And particularly anal retentive genealogists NEVER EVER find them there. They tell me I have no sources. That's how I know who to tell to jump in the lake. From experience I strongly suspect that people like that just don't want to know what I have to say. Nothing I do is likely to get through to them so no worries. My grandmother used to get into it with people like that, and lose every time, and believe me, her citations were proper. This is why she wouldn't have anything to do with or hear about the NEHGS and Daughters of the American Revolution, and, frankly, Daughters of the American Revolution's standards of proof are so low a worm could crawl through them. Their lineage books routinely have the lineages wrong, and it seems that besides proving the alleged ancestor fought in the Revolution, little documentation is usually provided, just a list of who descends from who, pretty much.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Sources in notes is a different strategy to be sure.
