I have no less than 8 direct ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War...and a couple who came over on the Mayflower...so this video is very timely!

Great info! Coincidentally one of my South Carolina ancestors died at the Battle of Cowpens...Some of my Revolutionary ancestors migrated south to the Carolinas after the war and received bounty land there. The Cherokee sided with King George and were forced out of the upstate after the war. Much of the bounty land veterans received was previously Cherokee territory.

Glad to have listened to this. I've thought to if I want to pursue this. Recently I spread my family tree from my confirmed 3rd grandparent out to the the 8th great grandparent to start confirming. I already knew from previous going out that I do have numerous American Revolutionary soldiers. And I like how Barbara suggest "Test" the offices in your area to get a feel. Last time I looked I have 4 in my area.

Weird how DAR says they want proof of bloodline, but won't accept DNA proof but will instead accept birth cert with non-bio father listed.

I went to the national DAR website and was contacted by my local representative within 2 days. I have been working with her to make sure I have all the documents necessary to resent with my application. My local representative is friendly, helpful and has work hard with me. Joining the DAR has been a dream/mission for 20 years but I thought it would be impossible to accomplish…not with the help of my representative.

Lisa, thank you for this episode! It was just the catalyst I needed to research those previously discovered and forgotten lines most likely linked to rev war soldiers. I'm one of the many self-proclaimed family historians out there chipping away at my tree since I was a teenager. I have roots in NC, VA, and MD and recently moved to TN. I reached out to the TN DAR and SAR contacts and within 24 hours had multiple responses for the local chapters. I was fortunate to have a line on file with generations 6-9 proven which made it much easier to follow up and prove the remaining links for my pending eligibility. I've already met with the local chapter new member rep and my paperwork has been submitted for review. I should hear within the next month if I am approved. Very exciting! Thank you again for all your information.

Awesome video! I've obtained three patriot lineage files (e.g. application and accompanying documentation record copies) from the DAR's genealogy section. The relative who submitted the materials joined the DAR in 1952 and those three patriots, as well as two others she submitted, were all verified and validated. The supplemental documentation copies, when made available with a DAR genealogy file request, prove to be immensely helpful tracing the lineage back to the ancestor (the war patriot). I've also obtained files on collateral ancestors who were patriots. Those supplemental files are simply the best. The DAR member to whom I share most of the ancestral line to the three patriots with was a lifelong genealogist. Her daughter is 96 years old and a couple years ago passed down to me a folder full of papers, and some were copies of the lineage records that she submitted to the DAR way back when! Though I'm not DAR-eligible, I do recommend obtaining those lineage files as they are truly chuck full of names, dates, places, and more. Maybe in the future do a video on the SAR? I'm sure a similar process but it would be likewise beneficial.

Thank you for sharing this video. I have been considering joining the DAR but haven’t made the commitment yet. A good friend is the Regent of a local group so I’ve heard lots but not with all the information given.

How much of a difference is it between DAR and SAR? I have two 4th great grandfathers that fought in the American Revolution. I just visited the grave of one of them a few weeks ago that actually has a military stone for his service.

My sister is trying to join the DAR. The problem we have is that our mother was adopted and the records are sealed. We show DNA connections as well as verbal history back the the DAR family, but no way to prove our mother was the girl the birth mother put up for adoption. She's still trying though

NSDAR has special teams dealing with adoptions and DNA in addition to those we call Hidden Patriots--such as African American and Native American patriots. We are here to help. Ask that the chapter registrar you are working with reaches out to the National Lineage Research Committee or one of the specialty committees if she does not know how to help with this lineage.

My grandmother passed away in 1977. She handed an envelope to my mother just before she passed away. She said "please keep up with this, you may want it some day". Mom said it was about my grand mother being a member of the DAR. The envelope was lost when a nor'easter blew out the windows in my mothers office room. I've sent emails off to a couple of chapters to no avail. I don't have maiden names for a couple of my female ancestors, and can only go back so far in my genealogy. I have a couple of names that could be, but I don't know anything for sure. My grandmother lived in Baltimore. She had a house fire in the 1940s, and the church where one of my 3 times great grandfather was baptized burned down in Somerset county Maryland. I have all of these tiny bread crumbs that have led me to naught for 15 years. It breaks my heart because it was important to my grandmother. At some point I need to give up chasing ghosts.

If you know your grandmother's name, we can likely find her information to help you find your way forward to get your application started! This is the case especially if your grandmother was a DAR member. A DAR registrar can likely help you. Don't give up. DAR is a wonderful organization.

The chapters are not very encouraging. In fact, if they don't like you they will sabotage your process. They're very descriminatory.
