As always, it's great to see you! My wife has quite an extended family and has difficulty figuring out these relationships. When I explain, she sometimes throws up her hands and says, "OK fine, but they were older than I, so it's 'Aunt Terry' or 'Uncle Jim'" even though they are true cousins.

Thanks for the info! I was referring to my 1st cousin 2 times removed by the wrong term.

I only watched the preview but I heard enough to know that what you said is inflammatory and maybe even defamatory. You rolled some news under the bus as fake news but didn't say who it was so you're just being generic without any evidence. Why would you do that?

Wikitree is the best but, unfortunately, like Ancestry & other genealogy family tree sites, the data is member contributed & a few times wrong information is entered by individuals who do not double verify their data.

You're right about photography not starting until about the 1830's, but wasn't commonly used until our Civil War. I had something similar happen regarding the picture of a 19th century upscale school house. In 2000 a gent in our Michigan township mistakenly added a picture of a fancy two-story school to his historical binder. Like you, it didn't sit well w/ me. This building was not something our rural farming community could afford. So I requested from our F/B historical society, that someone help find where this picture came from. And I was right, the old picture was of a Blaine School in the state of Washington. P.S. I've also read the non-fiction novel, The Confessions of Nat Turner (a Pulitzer Prize winner).

Good advice. I used Google lens when I found a sketch identified as one of my Quaker ancestors. This was on findagrave and many Ancestry trees. I discovered it was George Fox, a Quaker founder. In another instance, there was a 18th century painting of an ancestor's family on Ancestry. I don't remember how I found it, but it was in the UK National Gallery website. And, happily, it was my ancestor's family. It opened up a whole trail of discovery.

A BIG red flag in this case: Nat Turner was an enslaved person. The photo is of a distinguished, well-dressed professional man. Highly unlikely that an enslaved person in rebellion would be dressed up in fine clothing and photographed. PS: Nice to see you back again Mrs. Cooke!

The island of Barbados should not be overlooked when researching your genealogy from the Carolinas. There is a genealogical link to the early settlement of the Carolinas and the Caribbean islands. Research the seven Lord Proprietors of Barbados who settled the colony of Virginia in the 1600s.

I'm a Virginian and I have traced my roots back to 1562 in Weißenborn-Lüderode, Germany. My first American ancestor came to Virginia from Weißenborn-Lüderode in 1776; where he then left the German army and started a new life in Montgomery County.

What a great interview, jam-packed with real how-to-use-it info on Italian archives and the Antenati website! In only 35 minutes you addressed nearly everything one needs to know to access their ancestors' records! However, there is one important "stumbling block" I didn't hear you mention: Those early records are handwritten in "old Italian cursive"! It can be confusing/intimidating at first, until you discover that they form some alphabet letters differently from the way we do. An example is their capital "T," which sorta looks like an otherworldly cursive mashup of "H" and "G" together. Another is the lower-case "s," which they write like our lower-case "f" with a very long tail. So, the name Teresa looks crudely like "Gerefa," only much weirder! Anyway, thank you so much for this valuable tutorial!

Very interesting. I am researching the Benjamin Bibb family (King WIlliam Co, VA) line presently. Ive found convincing documents detailing VA and KY, but they do not match up exactly (one claims 3 children, the other 4, for instance - which is a big discrepancy imo). Its difficult when the author writes a summary, but you do not have supporting records. Thanks for sharing the info.
