The island of Barbados should not be overlooked when researching your genealogy from the Carolinas. There is a genealogical link to the early settlement of the Carolinas and the Caribbean islands. Research the seven Lord Proprietors of Barbados who settled the colony of Virginia in the 1600s.

Naturalization and border crossing records often include a birth date. The change-over from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar can also add to the confusion.

I'm a Virginian and I have traced my roots back to 1562 in Weißenborn-Lüderode, Germany. My first American ancestor came to Virginia from Weißenborn-Lüderode in 1776; where he then left the German army and started a new life in Montgomery County.

What a great interview, jam-packed with real how-to-use-it info on Italian archives and the Antenati website! In only 35 minutes you addressed nearly everything one needs to know to access their ancestors' records! However, there is one important "stumbling block" I didn't hear you mention: Those early records are handwritten in "old Italian cursive"! It can be confusing/intimidating at first, until you discover that they form some alphabet letters differently from the way we do. An example is their capital "T," which sorta looks like an otherworldly cursive mashup of "H" and "G" together. Another is the lower-case "s," which they write like our lower-case "f" with a very long tail. So, the name Teresa looks crudely like "Gerefa," only much weirder! Anyway, thank you so much for this valuable tutorial!

My newspaper stories about my ancestors include: Killing a huge bald eagle because it was eating his pigs and chickens Killing a huge rattlesnake on her door stoop Mule ran away and damaged the wagon Another daughter got bit by a rattlesnake Another left their baby by a fireplace and embers popped out and burned the baby up by the time she returned…had never heard about this from family 💔💔💔

Very interesting. I am researching the Benjamin Bibb family (King WIlliam Co, VA) line presently. Ive found convincing documents detailing VA and KY, but they do not match up exactly (one claims 3 children, the other 4, for instance - which is a big discrepancy imo). Its difficult when the author writes a summary, but you do not have supporting records. Thanks for sharing the info.

My hubby's roots are deep Coastal Plains CAROLINA, VA and I finally learned where the FURMAN line tracks before Maryland (thanks to genetic genealogy Ymarker 67 and greater). I recall very well when I began this work the work started in Harnett CO. It was the MOST burned county in NC. What I learned was connecting to people who worked on family history projects in the 50s and 60s and even into the early 70s brought records that were lost because of fires. Also helped unearth copies of missing records from the State Archives too. So paying attention and asking who has been working on various lines, checking the vertical files at research repositories can be a HUGE HELP. I found where one of the early JOHNSTON CO COMMISSIONERS took home a ledger that the family submitted to the Smithfield Heritage Center. I wholeheartedly agree to LEARN the COUNTY - tracking the pastors, sheriff's line might help find a grave (or a surprise bend in a pedigree due to an adoption by someone in the church who took in a child after one or more parent died).

Some "VA" families track back to Maryland Colony's expulsions too Genetic genealogy is so key to COLONIAL lines . We have a research window that is closing to help establish, anchor, and confirm direct lines. So many have assumed their lines track to VA and Jamestown. But the reality is there were people in the Carolinas before anyone landed in VA. So the work may whip back to the Carolinas, Florida, or even the Delta. There was a migration from the Delta in the mid 1600s that moved people to the Carolinas and a few made it all the way to VA. Those records are in QUEBEC because until the agreement was signed for the French to surrender their hold to the British, what I call the greater MISSISSIPPI was FRENCH controlled and the govt was in QUEBEC.

The Catholic Church wasn't as good as you think it was at keeping birth records. The reason I say this was because during the time that the United States started issuing social security numbers to people who lived in the Caribbean when they got their freedom from the Spanish rule, have family members who when they went to get their birth certificates from the Catholic Church the priest did not always date it for the actual birth. One in particular, he happened to date the BC for that VERY DAY, which was 7 to 10 years after their birthday.

So good to see you on video again, Lisa. Your voice is strong and your advice so much appreciated. A tip to go with the saving idea instead of trying to grab the text and put in a word document. Let your printing session setting options work for you instead. When you print to PDF or any output, there is often a setting in the right column for which pages to print. As you demonstrated scrolling down the image on the left, you'll see the page numbers at the bottom of that window. When you get to the info that you don't want, note when the last page number of the stuff you want. Then in the printing settings, depending on the program you're using, look for pages to print or something similar. Click on that and you may see Custom or odd/even or this page only. It may also just give you a window to type in the pages you want. If there is no window, use Custom and you should get a window to do this: type in the page numbers you want, for example 1-4 will print ONLY the first 4 pages. If you want to skip the first page, use 2-4. You can also choose specific page such as 2, 5, 10 or whatever by using commas. Keep a notebook handy to write down the pages you want to print to your document. To preview what will be printed, the new scroll window on the left will show those pages only. Then proceed with print, either to paper or PDF. This is a great way to save paper and eliminate unnecessary information. I hope the above is clear enough to try.

I had a relatively easy time on my Maternal line partly because I am a Pennsylvanian. My Mother's Mother had German background coming from York County, PA and Mother and I were born in Lancaster, County, PA which borders York, County. Traced the family name of my Maternal Great Grandmother 's maiden name Urey back to a Georg Uhrig about Seventeen hundred in York, County, name was changed to Urey by one of his sons. My guess would be that Georg Uhrig emigrated from the Palatinate as I have Cousins from that area in Germany.

I too am a Virginian. I thought most of my ancestors were around Henrico, 1600s, Chesterfield, Petersburg, Amelia, area. Since I moved to the Northern Neck I found I have ancestors from Lancaster and Richmond counties. The only reason that happened was Jonathan Lyell of Farnham bought 4509 acres in Dinwiddie County and his daughter Winifred met and married Mark Andrews , 1740s of Dinwiddie, who was my grandmothers ancestors. Weird how that even happened! I love family history!

I live in California and cannot travel to Virginia and my family goes back to quite a few years before 1750. I'm surprised that your expert did not mention Virginia Chronicles and the University of Virginia. Also Chancery or old court records and family Bibles which can be found at Virginia Chronicles. These have been great resources. Also the cursive writing is a challenge but also because of the unusual way they abbreviated words, not just the archaic meaning. I was hoping to get a few hints of places I'd not explored if your guest was a true expert. If she is then she's not giving away maybe her secrets. One thing for sure, family trees in my family are often wrong on Ancestry or Family search. Those are helpful but even Miles files have a lot of incorrect records. I know because I've been at this for nearly 30 years and painstakingly successfully placed some 20,000 people in my paternal tree from Virginia. Additionally plat maps are also helpful, not always but sometimes very much so. I feel there is much left out from your expert. I am a professional genealogist which to me is how I prefer to use as "expert" implies more knowledge than I' m hearing here.

Everyone, becareful when using Wikitree! You will do a lot of work putting your family tree together and someone will come along and take over a part of your tree. Start twisting things around until that part of your tree is connected to their family tree. They will say things like you are not a real genealogist. They have science degrees. Bully you until they get whatever they want. Then they put in a big ling spill about DNA and start tearing your family tree apart. There is one person who is stealing my work by putting his initials at the end of certain parts of my work and his initials have a link to his own personal wiki page. He told me that was his sinature to say that he was the one who completed the work. These people will also send private messages via your email saying things like your family tree is conflated. There is no sources/paper trails/and.... There is nothing you can do about it. If you stop using Wikitree all the work you put into it, cannot be deleted. The best software program I am using is Legacy.
