Thank you for this video, Connie. Have you seen the new tool on DNA Painter that uses the chromosome painter information from Ancestry? The tool is called Ancestry Chromosome Painter Segments. You CTRL-A, CTRL-C the text on Ancestry's chromosome painter page and paste it into the tool on DNA Painter. You can then add it to an existing chromosome map or create a new map. I am hoping that somehow this will help me to pin down my mystery 3rd great-grandparents. There's always hope. :) Have a blessed night.

Just last night I was searching Ancestry's You Tube page to see if they had anything on their Chromosome Painter. I will be honest, right now I find it pointless. However I am holding out that it is just the first step to something much greater. And first steps are often underappreciated and sometimes look like back tracking. So I am still hopeful. And I think that is part of the reason we have started having the option to identify matches, checking to see if they are maternal or paternal matches. I had thought that those steps were going to help with Thrulines and while I still do think that the idea that we may have options for a form of a chromosome browser is just awesome.

Informative video as always. This really is exciting to be at this point in history where science is unlocking so much data held within our DNA in a way that helps us make sense of our heritage. We are experiencing these developments in real time and are in a position that no previous generation could've imagined. I can't imagine what my grandfather, who died in 1967, would make of all of this stuff. I've been able to solve family mysteries with absolute certainty. Taking a DNA test and building my family tree has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my life. I'm so glad that both my parents are still around to share the knowledge.

Connie just watched your video...awesome as ever. I did discover on my Mom's ethnic backgrounds changed and definitely I am looking at it as a hint of migration because now she is showing Eastern Europe and Russia, though a small amount. What I do know is my Mom's Maternal Grandfather and there is documentation to prove that he came from Germany. His lines are definitely proven in that fact and considering his wife is not German either, but I am now suspecting that my Great Grandfather's ancestors have this in ethnic background and could be either from his Maternal or Paternal side...definitely need to explore more especially on my Great Grandfather's Maternal lines of which haven't done much on, but definitely useful as a hint now for further exploring. Thanks for giving us your take on this new Chromosome Painter at Ancestry...definitely got work to do now 👍 😀

I haven’t noticed this feature for myself yet, but I do hope this is something Ancestry keeps & builds upon over time. When I did my AncetsryDNA test last year, I was mostly interested in just knowing what the “base” of my genetic genealogy was (where my “original” ancestors came from). So far, I’ve only been able to find one set of immigrant ancestors (my maternal great-great-grandparents came from Finland [giving me Finnish & Swedish DNA]) but knowing my ancestry is also in England/NW Europe, Scotland, Ireland, & Wales helps me narrow down what potential places I have to look at for more information once I reach those ancestors.

Hi Connie. Do you think there will ever be a time in the future (since I am 73 nearer rather than far future) that DNA matches will be able to tell us which cousin comes from either paternal or maternal side? Yes it is great seeing hundreds of cousins except very few answer and that is so frustrating. I have seen your video about why people don't reply but it is still frustrating. In your opinion do you think this will ever happen or am I just wishing? Genealogy would be sooooo much easier if we knew which side these cousins hail from. Love your channel and watch and re-watch your posts. Take care.

@GenealogyTV
@GenealogyTV Жыл бұрын
Lynne, I think it will happen in the next year or so. You can do it now by grouping your DNA matches, using your best known match on your father side of the family. Then hit the shared matches tool. Everyone that shares DNA with you and your best known match on your father side, belongs on your father side of the family. Then everyone else belongs on your mother side. You can then colorcode them. Look for my videos on how to group your DNA matches.

Can you please do a video explaining Ancestry's DNA shared match page and inaccuracies in it, and omissions (maybe you've already done one, but I've not seen one, and not recently)? Firstly, and although I've been hunting down my grandpa's DNA matches, he's 102 and still going strong, and until recently didn't realise that on the shared matches tab on the compare page it only shows those with above 20cM of shared DNA so you'll never see the distant cousins, those that may unlock secrets and help you push your direct line back further through clustering. The only way to see whether some distant cousins under 20cM are related to those just above this cut off mark is to go into their match compare page and e their shared matches. I just don't understand why Ancestry doesn't show this (or at least only show 50 at a time as they do on the main match page, the pages seem the same). And unless you know or are willing to share your who DNA match list with another member (it's very unlikely to her managing 2 people's DNA results who have less than 20cM shared DNA) then you'll never know any shared matches between those distant cousins below this value and others, despite Ancestry having this information. Secondly, and this has been a bug bear of mine for a while, but the relationship estimate often says something like 5th-8th cousin, but when you click on link for how many shared cMs there are over how many segments it says the highest probable relationship is 2nd cousin 2x removed or 3rd cousin 1x removed. Why put the wildly different estimate even on the page and not the most likely one?!!! I just don't get it. I only found these things out quite recently and it actually put me off researching the very distant cousins because I thought they are so distant I'm never going to be and to match them up, so please can you make people aware of these two points. Love your channel and your videos, they are so helpful and inciteful, giving in depth information, and I thought these two points would help others trying to climb their family trees. As for the whole Ethnicity Estimate side of AncestryDNA, it's just one big gimmick that gives a broad impression, but don't rely on the detail as DNA doesn't fit nicely with our country borders, and I don't think ever has.

Connie …. Thanks. Do you know if it is possible to see the Chromosome Painter results for DNA Cousins? The FAQs implies that you can. This particularly relates to a unique Ethnicity. I understand even if it shows up on the same chromosome in Painter it can still be a false positive to assume we both inherited that ethnicity from the same person.
@GenealogyTV

Not yet. It's coming from what Ancestry has told us. But you could download your Ancestry DNA and upload it to MyHeritage. They have a Chromosome browser that lets you compare your DNA to a match... or multiple matches to see where you and your matches line up in the chromosomes for DNA and or triangulate. Keep in mind that is not an ethnicity painter at MyHeritage but a comparison of DNA across the chromosomes as compared with other DNA matches.

Certification comes in two different forms. The Board for Certification of Genealogist (BCG) and the Accreditation of Genealogist. Google both. They are a little different. You can get a ton of free education on their websites. BYU also offers a degree in genealogy. I recommend you download the BCG requirements. There are also webinars out there for Accreditation. When I studied, I read and reread a bazillion times every document on the BCG website. Some of those case studies are really good.

Great topic; really frustrating watching this video. The title caught my attention because I’ve seen this feature on Ancestry but hadn’t really looked into it. I had two questions I wanted answers to in understanding if I should invest any more time into the new tool: what is chromosome painter? And why should I care about it? (i.e. what value does it bring to my research). Six minutes in and it’s still unclear, then we jump to comparing it to what MyHeritage does with chromosomes.

Thanks for sharing! The reason I talked about MyHeritage is because it can be confusing. The Chromosome painter on Ancestry is completely different than the chromosome browser at MyHeritage. I just recently received my DNA result. One part I don't understand in Ethnicity is how it is impacted as I go back through my ancestral generations. I have researched both sides of my family back at least 5 generations with no Scottish connections yet my DNA suggests my ethnicity is 41% Scottish? Does 41% ethnicity indicate a recent generational ancestor or can it come from way back?

Autosomal is valid for about 200 or more year. Also keep in mind that there were migrations. You may have had 100% Scottish ancestors who migrated to some other place... and that is the only place you know of in your research. Lastly, estimates are updated every year... so they may change again.

The chromosome painting on ancestrydna is accurate for ethnicity, but the inheritance tool is very faulty, I know most of my Native American comes from my mom's side and it shows the largest segment on my mom's side on the painter same as 23andme but with the new update they totally moved my Native American ancestry on the inheritance to my dad side and left my mom side with zero, that's how I know the inheritance tool is inaccurate.

Second, I have European DNA on every line except for 19, 20, 21 on 23 & Me, while on Ancestry it's missing on lines 4, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 (as well as 19, 20, 21). I found the third paragraph in the FAQ interesting. "What if a match and I have the same ethnicity in the same spot? If you and a match have the same ethnicity in the same location on a chromosome, it doesn’t mean your DNA is identical there. You can have the same ethnicity in the same place, but from different patterns in your DNA. With the chromosome painter, it’s not possible to tell where you share DNA with someone." But if we can't see someone else's c-painter, how would I know?

I have one maternal branch that is Welsh (and 10% ethnicity according to Ancestry). Ancestry shows 3 entire (half) chromosomes as being Welsh, yet my maternal matches on those chromosome are largely french canadian or acadian. I see that Family History Fanatics did a video on this tool and, consistent with my observations, they determined that the tool wasn't helpful for genealogy research.

I just tried the Painter out. It doesn't seem to coincide with the ethnicity estimates, unless I'm just having a hard time reading it. For instance, it shows my parents with 10 and 17% Scottish, but on the Painter, it shows none for either. Am I missing something? I know my mother has an Irish grandmother, and her great grandparents were both Irish. My father had a set of great grandparents from Ireland, but I think one of them may have been Scottish. My mother shows no Irish in the breakdown. I also have 6% Sweden and Denmark in the regular ethnicity estimates, but both my parents show up with none but only in the Painter. Even the England and Northwestern Europe do not match. And I'm not talking about matching MY estimates against my parents, I'm talking about Ancestry's against Ancestry's.

Can the DNA results for your parents be wrong? I realize that's only 50% of their DNA, each, but based on what I know of my family history, there's missing info here that makes it impossible for me to tell which parent's DNA belongs to who. I've also been reading up on ancestral DNA, and apparently it's a really controversial subject amongst DNA scientists.
@GenealogyTV

The ethnicity estimates can be wrong genealogically. Plus they are estimates. Keep in mind the ethnicity estimates are based on a small reference panel in comparison to the DNA test takers. The cousin matches are where you can trust accuracy in the cM count. It's a long conversation that is a bit much to go into here.

@@GenealogyTV Thanks for your reply, and for the good information. And totally understand it's complicated and way too much for a comments section. Just was wondering how to use all the cool new tools when I'm not sure which parent is which, and wondering how things could seem so off with the individual parent estimates. (I need to get my parents to do a test, but at 90 and 91 they're super skeptical about identity safety.)

@@briananderson5634 That IS a big difference, but I think some of these companies results are so different because, well, if distant ancestors came from a location maybe 1000 years ago and have lived in the new location with others from the same location they were from, they get roped into being from the new location because there are so many of of their descendants in that location from just a couple hundred years ago. Does that make any sense at all? It's' confusing, for sure. EDIT: In other words, how many years does a population from Scandinavia have to live in a county in England to be English according to the company's calculations?

I wish Ancestry would have concentrated on using a chromosome painter on DNA match pages, that would have been a game changer, and not the gimmick that is ethnicity, that I don't think in many cases can be that accurate. In fact I'd rather they had updated the parent 1 and 2 to show which was which side instead as this is pointless imo. What I would say is that anyone who has Scottish and Irish, especially Ulster Irish in their tree, or even communities in their Ethnicity estimate prediction, then this is pointless. I've traced my family back to around 1800 (great grandparents) for my grandpa and it says one of his parents is almost entirely Scottish (I can only assume his father, as that side has more Church of Ireland i and Presbyterian n it). On that side I've found many distant Irish cousins that went over to the Glasgow area so I can only assume that they think their descendants are Scottish and used this DNA to clarify my ancestor's DNA that way. Maybe inter marrying between these Irish emigrants and the locals happened so much that the population is very mixed today. I do know that there will be quite a bit of Scottish DNA that has merged in with Irish DNA in the province of Ulster so I did expect some Scottish in the Ethnicity Estimate, but it started out as 60%-40%, which I thought was right if the error margins are overestimating the Scottish, and I adjust accordingly, but after the update it moved in the other direction, and because I expected a bit of Scottish in both parents it would even out, but it says one parent is entirely Irish and the other 95% Scottish, which just seems plain wrong to me. So what is going on? Well, I think this is because the system at Ancestry is built for the American market, which to find the original ethnicity has to go back and back and back, maybe pre 1800 for many. Pre 1800, where records are very scarce and you have to be lucky to find any evidence of your ancestors, especially if they are just peasants working the land and had very common names in the area they lived in, or even if they moved around, then it's impossible to verify this. Which leaves me thinking broadly speaking this works if you are talking about large regions or areas where the majority of people didn't mix with each other. Other than that this is worthless imo, so be very wary. It's a novelty, nothing more and I wouldn't take it very seriously at all. DNA doesn't observe borders between countries in the way this suggests it does, and people want to see, that's how this is sold in most of their advertising.

@@jjbud3124 Glad I can help. I just don't think a one size fits all works. Maybe one of my grandpa's ancestors did originally come from Scotland and maybe were part of one of waves of plantation, but I'm not sure how Ancestry can separate out these populations. In the communities section there is one my grandpa fits into that straggles the Irish Sea, called something like the Scottish Lowlands, Northern England, and Northern Ireland (as well as one called Northern Ireland and South West Scotland), which I think would fit his ancestry that I've found a lot better than the exact modern day country estimates that they are using. I'd love to know how they distinguish the exact origin of the DNA for these very connected areas without using some verified family trees as an anchor point.

@@mattpotter8725 One thing is certain about all this. You learn a ton of history. Ancestry says I'm mostly the English, Irish, Scottish combo. I did a CRI Genetics test and they say I'm mostly German, then English, and French. But when you think of it, England was invaded long ago by the Anglo-Saxons and the Normans, so the German and French makes sense if the CRI Genetics company is taking that into consideration and Ancestry is using more current DNA results from the regions settled by the invaders.

"Ethnicity painter"? "A little different from others"? Um, no, this is nonsense, a *lot* different from others, and a poor response to untold numbers of people *begging* Ancestry to get a *real* chromosome painter going. This is definitely NOT "neat." It's pathetic. Especially because the whole ethnicity thing is an estimate, limited in scope and time, varies from company to company, and is much more accurate for some people than for others. For some point in the past, usually not more than a couple of centuries ago. *Hugely disappointing.* "Baby steps" is right. No one wants baby steps. We need an actual chromosome painter. 🙁
