I appreciate all your videos, however none of the KZbin creators go back to 1800 in New Jersey. That's my brick wall. Trying to find the parents of William Coates Smith, b 1804 in Burlington County. Several people list Daniel and Hannah Coates Smith as his parents but the are wrong. I hired a professional genealogist and she didn't find them either.

Thank you for uploading the video it was very informative. But the problem is that on Family tree people change information without first collaborating. Which means they can sabotage many years of research.

Great video Connie as always. I don't know if you ever do this but on Ancestry there is a way to link an ancestor on your tree there to Family Search tree by using their Unique ID. By linking you can share records that you have on Ancestry but not on FamilySearch. I use Ancestry as my "rough draft" tree and when I have the right records, info etc on ancestor I then can transfer that info to FamilySearch since this is a shared tree. Not sure if you've done a video on how to do this but I think it would be very beneficial. Hope you feel better very soo.😊

Thank you for the presentation. It was excellent! Just for some helpful information for Windows’ browsers: instead of right-click and selecting open in a new tab, you can do this automatically by clicking the mouse wheel while the mouse cursor hand is on the link. You will then get the link opened in a new tab.

Because so many records haven't been indexed you really do want to use the card catalog for vital records. A lot of the old county and genealogy books are free on Google books and can be downloaded so you can have them.

I enjoy watching your take on how to integrate both search engine’s into your process. I have been using very similar procedures for the last 12 years and agree that Linking the two websites creates a situation where the whole is better than the sum of the parts. I find it necessary to review the work I have done from time to time because both family search and ancestry keep adding more documents.

I guess I'm an anomaly. Since the changes to family tree I have found more ancestors in my tree, the problem is that they are incorrect. I keep getting prompts to do temple work that's already be completed. For some reason on Ancestry my tree now has "Beta" written next to it and it isn't correct either. Fortunately my husband has my tree linked to his and it's OK. What's going on? If I'm part of some test, I don't appreciate it. I've been researching for 44 years.

They are rolling out a new feature. As soon as I get it, I'll make a video about it. In short, it's a shortcut to ThruLines... so it is a hint that will need to be reviewed. Don't automatically download from it.

Could you do a video about the Numident file, how to find it, how to use it, what it's for, etc. I've never heard of that before and I've been doing genealogy for 30 years. I recently found a gold mine on Family search, 544 pages of German records for a ton of my family.

I chose not to subscribe to ancestry when I started my tree years ago. Of course, I kept hitting the pay wall and finally realized that I could couple Family Search to my ancestry searching and fill in many of the items I couldn't get at ancestry. It was very helpful in the beginning when my skills and time were limited and helped me stay motivated. Since then I seasonally subscribe to ancestry but am still always going to Family Search too. I have also found important to go back and check for records periodically since so many records come online all the time. Thanks for this info, Connie.

I came across your page while doing some research on Ground Penetrating Radar/Find a grave/Ancestry and found you. Is there a better way of trying to verify veterans? At times, I cannot confirm military service. Have any tricks other than Ancestry and Archieve.gov.? Past these, I’m just copy and paste into anything with my fingers crossed. Like a blind pig searching for an acorn. I even tried to sent questions to relatives that were listed on an obituary. My present cemetery is Spring Creek Cemetery in Parker County Texas. There are 832 burials and only 82 veterans were accounted for. By hook or crook, I have increased that number to 112. There are a few more that relatives state they are veterans but produce no evidence nor can I verify. It is an effort of love, being a veteran myself. Anything will be very helpful as I do this in cemeteries one at a time.

Hi Connie, I took Ancestry DNA and 23and me and they both detected Irish DNA. On ancestry DNA I’m only 4% Ireland. On 23 and me. They match me with the Republic of Ireland, and gave me seven counties in Ireland that I match with. On ancestry DNA I have a few 100% Irish matches. Is it possible to find my Irish ancestors despite having a little bit of DNA from Ireland? Mine is probably going back 5 to 7 generations. Thanks.
@GenealogyTVКүн бұрын
All DNA companies have different reference panels. Therefore, you will see different results. Focus on the records, the paper trail, the DNA Cousin matches and their trees to thelp trace. I personally don't use ethnicity estimates except to determine possible origins for undiscovered branches... and then it's not super reliable.

Great video. It also confirms that I’m not crazy. Portrait view of tree can now expand to show cousins!! I generally view landscape, so I wondered if I had missed it. Trick: Using the sidebar widgets from the Person page auto-populates the information so you don’t have to bounce back and forth copying info. The collection filters are readily accessible too (no extra click to access like search page).

I'm doing research for a very good friend, specifically his great-grandfather and great-grandmother on his mother's paternal side. His great-great-great uncle (one of the brothers) had one son who was in and out of mental institutions his whole life. He can be found on the 1940 census in an institution in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. That's the last that I see of him anywhere. He was born in 1886 so he may have lived many more years past 1940. He cannot be found in the Oklahoma death certificate index. There is no social security index record on any of the three record sets that I can find. If the social security number was required in 1936, why would he not be found?
@GenealogyTV5 күн бұрын
He might not have applied for a Social Security card. He may have died. Try county records for a death certificate and local genealogy/ historical societies for info about the institution.

The service is a wonderful addition, though searching for the right records seems a bit wonky. One has to know the right keywords, which is harder for newbies. Hopefully, FamilySearch allows users more drop-down-type options.
