Because of your channel I spent 3 days of my 5 day vacation in the Mormon genealogy center in Salt Lake City. I guess I caught the bug. Now I am back to the 13th century where my ancestor was Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. My 10 year old granddaughter is now getting into it.

I use Family Search frequently, but I often wondered whether it's possible to do a search by address, instead of by name? Example: Who lived at 99 ABC Street in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania in the 1900 US Census? Love your channel, Connie, and have learned a lot!

I would try to search City Directories. That's a good question. I tried Search>Records using just my address where I grew up in the place field but then I had to add a surname. I did find my father about the 5th person down with that address. So I had to have a surname in there... Great question for FS.
@Bad_Artist_2 ай бұрын
@@GenealogyTV The reason I asked -- The surname on the ship's manifest was obscured, due to poor handwriting, while the address was a little more clear. I will try City Directories and do my best with the illegible surname. Thanks again, Connie!

Speaking of Family Search, how do you handle those putting wrong information on your relatives? I have a person who says they are part of the Mormon's research and has changed things making it wrong. I correct it and it gets changed back. Like you I've been doing this many years and constantly find wrong information on FS. Thanks for the great videos and information.

When I researched my tree on FamilySearch, I found information that I did not add. There were a lot of errors, too. Are the trees we enter private or can anyone add to them?
@Jan-xp8yiАй бұрын
FamilySearch is a collaborative tree, anyone can make changes. I only make changes if I have documentation to back up the information. Then I add the reason I update information, I wish everyone did
@Namnodnol19 күн бұрын
I also spend much of my time on FS correcting other people's mistakes. Many are obvious mistakes too and often take no account of the information and sources already attached to entries. Recently I had an example of a distant branch of my family that I had tracked from birth to death through the census returns and birth and death registrations from 1841 to 1911. Some days later one of my notifications was showing changes to the branch. The User had deleted two people and replaced them with two others of the same name but born in a different part of the UK and to a different mother. I changed them back and in my notes I explained why and even gave them the names and ID numbers of the parents their people belonged to. They are now shown in the correct tree/family so the User obviously realised their error. Unfortunately, not all do and continue to change existing trees without offering any explanation or sources other than the ubiquitous "Gedcom Data".

I have a question about incorrect information on a death certificate. My GGGF death certificate information was filled out by his daughter, the line that ask who was his father she put her initial with her married name. In Family Search people keep adding back that name as his father. it so aggravating to keep removing the tree connection to him. That id number keeps showing up. How to correct this for good? I added a note to the image record of the death certificate the D.F Defarg is not his father name but that does not help at all. It shows up in all the popular family tree websites.

Go to the ancestor on FS. Scroll down the details tab. On the right there is a notes section. Open that up and click Alert. Then type your comment about this repeated error. What this does is put an alert message on the top of the ancestors profile saying to read the alert before making changes.
@ClauJos2 ай бұрын
I created a partial tree on Family Search about a year ago with the intention of adding more later from my large tree on Ancestry. I recently visited Family Search again and see that more ancestors have been added by someone else -- and they are not my ancestors! What can I do to correct this? I wrote the corrections in the notes section but the tree is still wrong and I don't see an option to override what someone else entered.
@GenealogyTV2 ай бұрын
Go to the notes on the right column in the Ancestors profile and add the Alert check box. That will flag anyone who comes to that ancestor saying to read the notes before making changes.

@@GenealogyTV Thanks but I am trying to find out how to actually correct the tree. Is there a way I can replace the ancestral branch they have added to MY tree with the correct one? By adding one wrong ancestor, they have ruined all the previous generations as well.

Hello, I feel your frustration having just begun adding my own family information to the FamilySearch world tree a few months ago. I have been doing family research for about 33 years and I would just like to say that I am not a member of the LDS church but I am always grateful to them for all the work they do and for the absolutely immense amount of genealogical records they share with all of us. Specifically addressing your dilemma with incorrect information you’ve found in your FS tree; I found I had to slow down and learn how to fix these problems as they arose. The FS software engineers have included numerous tools for researchers to address these situations as you come across them; incorrect information or incorrect children attached to parents, duplicate entries, etc. However, it is necessary for us to learn how to use these tools. I have found one of the best ways for me to learn is by watching how-to videos on my tablet at the same time I am working on my laptop in the FS tree. I can pause (or rewind) the video and go “do” the thing, then get a true sense of how it works. We all learn differently, but one of the best instructors (for me) I have found is connected with the BYU Library Family History channel which can be found here on KZbin and the instructors’ name is Kathryn Grant. BYU Library Family History channel KZbin link: www.youtube.com/@BYULibraryFamilyHistory/videos Kathryn Grant’s clear, concise, informative class videos have helped me tremendously in learning how to navigate through some of the more difficult to understand FS tree dilemmas such as how to merge individuals or remove a child that does not belong to a couple, etc. I learn something new every time I work in the FamilySearch tree :-) But Connie did answer your question about using the notes and alert on the right side panel widget to collaborate with other family researchers & let them know about your sources and reasons for including certain information on your ancestor profile pages. Take some time to carefully review each of your ancestor profile pages on the FS tree, explore all the side widgets to see what information they contain and how that information can help you! It’s good stuff. Sorry for the length here….and Connie, thank you for your highly informative videos! Regards, Anita Sheahan Coraluzzi
