At minute 1:47 you say that the 8 original countries have expanded to 123. Unfortunately I can't find anywhere online that the GATT was originally made up of 8 countries. Do you have some more information by any chance? Thanks in advance :)

Prof. Zerbe, your video touches on a rarely studies forerunner to the GATT, the International Trade Organization (ITO). I think political scientists could benefit from a greater understanding of the ITO, its failures, and why the GATT continued to win the day. Excellent presentation.

@@NoahZerbe Prof. Zerbe, that sounds like the world before the fall or reduction of global colonialism. The question of national sovereignty was imagined to be more than a European peace at Westphalia. Or when a Soviet soldier imagined, “What if I don’t shoot that guy trying to fall the Berlin Wall.” I think these are critical questions that must be asked and explored in order to realize a meaningful progression and avoid calamity.

What about the trade unions?
@NoahZerbe2 жыл бұрын
Trade unions were permitted under GATT, which left much of the internal economic organization of countries at their discretion. Remember that GATT was created under the system of embedded liberalism (see my video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppTNfauZoraLmbc) that characterized much of the Western political economy from 1945 through the early 1970s. Afterwards, unions come under increasing pressure, largely from domestic political movements, especially in the US and UK. This was certainly aided by the lack of protections afforded trade unions under the WTO, but I think primarily reflects shifts in domestic politics.
