I had this model and it worked great for me from 1982 to 2002, then I gave it away. It worked still to the last day. Just a bit noisy, but it was the 80s..We weren't as picky back then....LOL I even had that fan in the video too, bought it in 1972 and still using it daily !!!

The sound brings back memories. 70s Carry Cool was the first unit I had in my room as a kid. Got really cold and removed a TON of moisture from the air. The chronology of my bedroom was: 70s Carry Cool 1984-1991, Amana CoolZone 1992-1999, Kenmore (WCI) 6200btu w/ digital controls (R22, Matsushita rotary...good unit) 2000-2006. 2006: Moved out of parents' house. Have had central air since. Used to love burying myself in blankets in my childhood bedroom while the Carry Cool froze the room out. Best small window AC ever. What happened to it? I don't know. One day at the start of summer of 1992 a new Amana unit showed up courtesy of my parents. I was 8. Thanks for reading this long post...if you made it this far, I salute you.

Those units are nostalgic to my childhood. I think they are excellent units and agreed they will freeze a room out.

I still have 2 of these units, a Hotpoint and GE units. The GE has the energy save switch while the Hotpoint doesn't. We use them when the central ac fails. We took the GE with us on vacation to Maine and used it in the bedroom and it did a fantastic job. They are good units and the dont rust out.

That’s one of the very few units with a visible condenser fan. My favorite visible condenser fan unit is a GE dual thrust. I still like the unit that you’re showing. I used to see them same GE units everywhere when I was a kid. And now, I’m not seeing them anywhere anymore. It makes me sad!

Those spine fin evaporators are super dehumidifiers! I've found them to capture more humidity from the air than standard coils.

Did some wrapping doorways in blankets dropped a space 3x bigger than it was meant for to 75 from 100 over night. Ran it like that a few months. It out ran a new ac i had on other side of house.

I have always had a soft spot for the GE "Carry Cool" units! I think it was because I could actually carry one as a kid growing up in Louisiana. My best friends when I was a kid had central A/C but they could only use their Carry Cool Units that each of their bedrooms had during the day. Silly. I remember the units well as they only had an ON / OFF Switch. No Thermostat or Fan Speed. Just the On / Off Toggle switch. Those little units would freeze out their bedrooms! I used to see the Carry Cool Units all the time in thrift stores and I wish I would have bought a few. Have not seen one in years. I bet there is more of these vintage Carry Cool units than any other brand out there still running!

Those things last forever I've never seen a dead one, I knew a guy who used to work for GE and he said the only weak point was where the aluminum piping was epoxied to the stubs on the compressor and that seldom failed if ever.

Used to think these were lackluster until I installed one. They remove humidity better due to weaker air flow

Pretty sure my parents had a c(k)arry c(k)ool as our first ac in the late 80s/early 90s. Nostalgia!

That was the only ac we had as kids. I once took it apart to clean it, it’s all that spikey fin coil inside and out. Ours shook because I think it got dropped and had some cracks in it.

I think these got hate because they were super cheap and kinda ghetto. If Kenny from South Park had ac, it was this.

It is missing the filter… had that foam kind that falls apart. One thing I didn’t like was the outside exhaust blew straight up and if you had storm windows it would kinda blow up in between.

These things get hate? These are like the Ford Panther platform of window units, they are dead reliable. I personally think these things are the coldest running ac units I've ever used. My only problem with them is that they can be a bit of a pain in the ass to install into certain types of windows versus other units. I have an almost brand new 70s model (I think it's a 6000 btu), and that thing works great, I just don't really use it.

I don't hate the carry cool line up. I actually think they're pretty cool. No pun intended. Well maybe.... It's all about keeping it in perspective. They probably are a little cheaper than conventional air conditioners so they might be a little louder 3 air conditioners in the same room? I see nothing wrong 😂
