Bohannon can probably only really talk about shit with people who've fought in the war. Given how the rest of his life went, he surely has some nostalgia for the war, as well as a tendency to drop his guard around old fighters. Even hating some of the things he did, i think him saying that he went to war for glory isn't even a lie, and i think he found it in some way. But he also just seemed to enjoy many aspects of that life over farming. Like with this Sidney Snow, no matter what Cullen ever thought about him, they share quite a few moments. Talking about BBQ, tobacco, shared home, shared ideology, and the last time he wasn't lonely over a long time probably. he was super sensible about talking to the Yankees about his defeats. Which is funny because the only exception is the US president and former General that beat him and his people.

I think that Grant's part in this series is masterfully handled. The hero of the show is a southern ex-soldier who lost his family in the war. Grant is a northern general. They needed to find a way to put these men together with neither of them being the bad guy. The writers walked a very fine line. And they did it beautifully. One of the best scenes in recent TV history IMHO.

Can we please give Anson Mount the credit for this scene. I’ve seen actors do sorrow, do solemness, do rage amazingly wells. This here has to be the most natural and convincing display of surprised joy and Giddiness I ever think I’ve seen an actor pull off. I can watch this scene over and over, knowing Anson read this line multiple times on a script, maybe performed it over and over on set, and I can’t find anything in it that betrays the fact that this isn’t the first time Cullen has heard this news and the natural reaction he’d have.

@@SnapSuplexSeanVA I have been unable to verify this Shiloh quote. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me your source. I can say that it is well documented that Grant did not use profanity. His secretary, Horace Porter, ask him about this once. Grant replied "...I never learned to swear. When a boy I seemed to have an aversion to it, and when I became a man, I saw the folly of it. ...swearing helps rouse a man's anger; and when a man flies into a passion, his adversary who keeps cool, always get the better of him. [Swearing] is a great waste of time." Though I could see how he might let it slip in the heat of battle. I know I would in that situation.

Favorite lines of the shows, shows two guys that fought on opposing side that a literally 2 peas in the same pod... Only reason America went to war within itself wasn't to abolish slavery... it was just a huge power grab of a bunch of old men who felt they didn't need to listen to the president... slavery was one of the problems that caused the war, but too say the civil war was over slavery is bs. It was about the power hungry elite in America shaking up the power struggle because they wanted more... Every war is fought for religion, greed or power... Civil war was fought for power and greed because the states in the USA had to much power over their own state and couldn't be interfered with at the federal level. So break out into a civil war(under the guise of freeing slaves a morally right objective) sadly they just wanted to enslave the whole populace in a different manner. For every action there is a reaction and the government knows this... so the action of war the reaction is war is bad... But we are freeing the slaves so the reaction is worth the action? wrong just an illusion painted by the puppet master.

Bohannon and Grant are soldiers, they simply did a job and earn or given different titles of status during the war, and when it was over they shared a drink and smoke and talk shit how they wish they took each other out... Not out of hate or anything else, to them it was just a job. Grant trusted Bohannon to build the railroad cause it was real battle than a suited fat cat, true hardship, survival on the terrain with no sense of ambition and greed. The real reward was that finishing the rail road was itself reward being part of legacy of history.
