In this episode, Uncommon Knowledge is honored to have retired four-star General James Mattis. General Mattis retired from the Marine Corps as a full general in 2013, where he served as the eleventh commander of the United States Central Command. He also served as the commander for NATO supreme allied transformation, and as commander of the United States Joint Forces Command. Mattis is now an Annenberg Distinguished Visiting Fellow fellow at the Hoover Institution.

He was my Battalion Commander (1/7) 29 Palms, CA, when I reported aboard in mid-1989. He was TDY, and I actually met him at the summer mountain package, at Pickle Meadows. We cut our training short, a C-130 landed in a ranchers field, and we went back to "the stumps" to prepare to deploy to South West Asia (SWA). A more generous and intelligent man than I have ever met. Absolutely the best read gentleman I have ever met. More than anything, he was a life coach, and very interested in setting junior leaders up for success. A great Marine!

Agreed, thanks for sharing. One of the greatest sport coaches of all time was the Late John Wooden who was also renowned as a Life Coach though I disagree with one of his understudies on most everything. Men like Mattis take that saying of What goes TDY, stays TDY to the woodshed since they are mission oriented and not in good conscience going to be constrained by failed policy wonks or diplomatic suicide.

I Wish General Mattis an Exceptional Birthday. May the Lord listen to all those voices here that Know America can only be Saved by a Warrior Humble enough to learn from the Warriors that preceded him. The Fallen's Spirits are Powerful. They never die. They Transform. In times of special Urgency, they Condense in one human like a Flux of Electrical Energy would do, feeding Eloquence and Intelligence of another Soul, Transmitting Courage, Igniting the ones whose nature is same Voltage.

Amen to never regretting serving in the Armed Forces of your country. I learned lessons their that have nothing to do with combat. About leadership. About hating someone’s guts, but knowing if the chips were down, they had your back. A learned respect, for authority, and for myself. Best thing I ever did. And now my grandson is the 4th generation. My Dad was USMC, Iwo Jima, among others. My son, a mustang O-4 in the Navy, 19 years. My short 4 years. Everyone in my family born here (Dad was the son of two immigrants from Prussia), has served. And I hope my great-grandchildren serve as well. God Bless America.

the general says something extremly important. Getting clear of the military objectives is tied to the polítical objectives. that was not the case in vietnam, korea, afganistan iraq. The US happily went to war in those instances and it came up that it didnt know how to end the wars. are you clear in your objetives? do you know what it entails to achieve them? are military and polítical objectives align? those are basic strategic questions. this man is a true strategist.

at 10:15 he states something that still makes me mad but is true...you have to have personal relationships at the highest levels...what happened to a president and his advisors recognizing when someone is right regardless if they like them or not?...when general shinseki said WERE GONNA NEED 500,000 troops...he was right, rumsfeild says we can do it with 120,000....maybe politicians should heed generals more often...regardless if they like them or not....when Colin Powell said If you break it your going to have to fix it...he was right...we broke it...its still not fixed...I wish Bush jr had heeded that....that one warning would have saved us all alot of trouble...God bless those who serve....and God help those whom are elected.

I came away from this video with a better understanding of relationship between the military leadership & the civilian leadership in America. General Mattis is well educated & extremely intelligent. He is an amazing leader of men who puts a great deal of thought into everything he says & does. Our country is truly blessed to have such a dedicated professional serving as Secretary of Defense and I rest easy in the certain knowledge that he is giving President Trump the best counsel on the optimal use of or military forces.

Correct: too much rigidity in the military budget eliminates the ability for wisely chosen leaders to utilize the creativity & ingenuity of his/her people to surpass expectations with less cost for greatest achievement opportunities. Once a competent leader is chosen, one must grant the trust and favor to achieve greatness. The mere trust and favor accelerates achievement of desired goal. Constant impediments of progress are accomplished by monitoring too closely the most minuscule of decisions. A wisely chosen leader MUST be given the freedom to achieve said goals!
