I think that where Saddam miscalculated was that the Bush administration would squander US credibility (the US's significant amount of "soft power") with the world and it's allies to go after him (Saddam being a relatively small player on the world's political/economical field that was not worth the cost in soft power, treasure and blood to take out). In other words, Saddam miscalculated that the Bush administration would act in such a self-destructive way as it did.

Hmmm. And yet, somewhere in exile is Idi Amin of Uganda. I haven't seen a notice of his death, such as that we recently were given regarding South Africa's Nelson Mandela. Go figure.
