Video highlights from the unveiling ceremony of a statue of General Sikorski at Newark Cemetery on the 4th of July 2023, the 80th anniversary of the general's death and the 30th anniversary of his repatriation to Poland from this very cemetery, where he lay buried alongside his fallen comrades for 50 years.
Sikorski was the Prime Miniser of the Polish Government- in-Exile and Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Armed Forces and was a key British ally during WWII. He had a close and trusted relationship with Winston Churchill, on whose invitation he and thousands of Polish troops came to Britain in 1940 after the fall of France to the Nazis. Sikorski was instrumental in many key allied battles and made an important contribution to the eventual allied victory.
The statue of Sikorski for Newark Cemetary was designed by sculptor Andrew Lilley and was commissioned by the Polish Cultural Institute in London in partnership with Newark Town Council and Newark and Sherwood District Council as a memorial not just to Sikorski and his significant contribution to WWII, but also as a reminder and commemoration of the contribution of all the Polish Armed Forces at the time.
