This video was uncomfortable for me in the best kind of way because a lot of what you said was relatable because I’ve felt both too little to the point of numbness to too much to the point of feeling hyper aware of everything, but we keep moving forward. It’s okay to hurt it’s okay to want it to end but it’s not okay to take all of that alone and laying down. Ask for help, reach out, it’s scary I know and you that little voice in your head might tell you that you can’t be too specific because you’ll seem attention seeking but ignore it, your feelings are valid so please, for your sake, tell someone you trust. They care, they care about you. Remember you’re not alone, no matter how lonely you feel. There’s no weakness in asking for help, it doesn’t make you less than if anything it means you’re strong enough to be vulnerable and open. Just don’t be an ass about it like the iron hands lmao.

I like Iron Father Stronos saying "The flesh is weak, but without a soul we are nothing", That gives me hope that if GW decides to do anything the Iron Hands can be redeemed, or at least go through a rebirth arc of finally remembering Ferus's teaching.

considering the original saying which was originally said by vulkan to ferrus manus is 'the flesh is weak but deeds endure' means anyone old enough to remember that like a dreadnought could help with that

The Iron Hands are… uncomfortably relatable. I’ve been a fan of them since highschool. I relate to the Iron Hands on almost every level, especially that which you explained in this video. The self-loathing, the paralyzing fear of failure, the feeling of never, EVER, being good enough, and the all-encompassing need to do MORE, to do better. Painfully relatable.

Duncyn stood amongst broken bodies and broken vehicles. Rising out of the battlefield like a ghoul. He pointed his sword at the lines. “Advance.” The surviving Iron Hands began to march forwards, past the bodies of loyalties and traitor alike. Towards the enemy. Ma’naru turned and saw the Iron Hands leave. “Captain! Captain!” The Iron hand turned “what is it, salamander?” “Where are you going? You abandon your post!” “The enemy is reeling. One proper attack, driven home, will change this battle. We will shatter them!” “And lose more brothers? Abandon more of the emperor’s subjects? To what end!” He turned at that. Black gunmetal armour creaking and hissing. Cold blue lenses met with the blazing coal eyes of the salamander. “The end. For us or them. We march. Stay here with the few brothers you scraped off the black sands and atomic glass of istvaan and protect civilians, Ma’Naru, it suits your legion.” He turned to glare at the purple figures rallying in the distance. “As this vengeance suits us.” He walked off into the battle.

As someone who struggles with depression I thank you for saying this. I wasn't prepared to cry during one of your videos, but what you said makes so much sense. The Iron Hands are Grieving and they never had anyone there to help them. Ferrus never got the chance to dissuade the replacement of parts of themselves, so the only way they know of to feel closer to their father is to continue replacing parts of themselves.

Yes! The Iron Hands need representation! I love these guys. They are MY legion. We are more than our dead primarch. The best thing about them is how they are a foil to the Emperor's Children. One fell into the excesses of sensation, while the other abandoned it entirely. Seeing what happened to their primarch definitely contributed to their downfall. But I also believe it was seeing what became of their closest allies that caused them to abandon emotion and their humanity. They saw how it could be corrupted. When GW brings back the Emperor's Children, they better bring the Iron Hands back to the fore. Stand strong, brother. Our Deeds Endure.
@Kennyselman

The Iron Hands have usually 3 elements to em. 1.) On the tabletop, when shooting armies get a big push, Iron Hands crush most armies hard. 2.) They are the asshole legion, true, but it is because they are the most methodical and destructive in combat, and to using people as just numbers, the true representation of the grinding machinery of the Imperium of man. 3.) Damn, that super radioactive terminator armor suit sounds awesome, what do you have to do to use it? WHAT?!?!?!?! So yeah, that's most of the opinions on the Iron Hands I've heard...and yet...OUCH.

That, and when Vulkan was lost, it was in a nuclear explosion. A body was never found, the kill was never confirmed. And he did return during the heresy. The Iron Hands witnessed their father being butchered on the black sands with their own eyes. The Salamanders had hope when all hope had been stripped from the Iron Hands right in front of them.

"YOU MONSTERS SACRIFICED THOSE GUARDSMEN!" Iron Hand: And each one represented HOW many times I've wanted to die. Can't speak for my brothers. "What..." Iron Hand: DID I STUTTER!? You can replace all the parts you want, but it still won't cover the gaping hole in your Heraldry. It's like Ferrus' depression reaching out like Sanguinius' last moments and affecting his own legion, depression at not being able to save a friend, depression towards failing his sons in not being able to help them out of trying to be like him, crushing stuff. So crushing, that the IH feel the need to replace these parts just to stand it, but even that has limits. Misery loves company, after all. Even if they won't admit it, like the parallel of the Iron Legion. Both are broken, one got crushed by their living father, the other crushed by losing theirs, both have damaging coping methods.
@TheMichaellathrop
@TheMichaellathrop Ай бұрын
They are the other side of the depression coin of the world eaters, in the case of the iron hands it's more the psychological side of things where as the world eaters are more the needs medication side of things. Having been depressed and and having had my reaction be to get drunk and start punching inanimate objects I can empathize with the mental state that they are in permanently, the very fact that the in universe description of the butchers nails says it causes pain to feel literally anything other than rage is a really on point analogy for certain forms of depression. The fact that it's a permanent state due to a medical condition just makes it so much more tragic.

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk about my legion! It feels great to see a youtuber actually talk about them outside of them just being assholes and getting to the core of what they are supposed to be. These guys are my absolute favorite faction in Warhammer because I connect to them on such a personal level which is insane because I got them off of pure chance. At the end of 8th edition I decided I want to start collecting Warhammer models and I checked ebay. The cheapest models available were by far Iron Hands models due to them catching some nerfs around that time. So I bought them and started reading their codex and thought there were so cool at the surface level. But as time went on I realized just how much I sympathized and related to them and I wanted desperately for other people to see them that same way but everyone only focused on their exterior and mocked them for their actions. The only other content creator that touched on their mental issues was Mr. Bones 40k but this was a much deeper dive into it. Thank you for an amazing video and some comfort that I'm not alone.

As someone with depression and autism, what you said really rings true. The Iron Hands were a chapter I deeply fell in love with when I first took a gander at 40K. Their all-consuming desire for perfection and deep self hatred was something I’ve felt on many occasions. Ironically, I also have a condition called hypotonia (it means I can’t really gain as much muscle mass as a normal person would), and it’s something I’ve always been bullied for, which only deepened my physical insecurities. As a response, I’ve always fantasized about replacing my weak flesh with mechanical parts and becoming perfect. Yet, the Iron Hands were not the chapter that I am now playing on the tabletop. The Imperial Fists are my all-time favorites and it’s for much the same reasons: their unbelievable devotion to self improvement even to the point of self detriment. However, I also strongly relate to their unwavering devotion and stalwart belief in doing what’s right. They understand their flaws but do not let them consume their lives, instead of thinking they are weak for having flaws, they believe that their flaws do not define them and instead learn from it. To me, they fit the image of what I aspire to be. TLDR: the Iron Hands are a dark mirror of what I am, the Imperial Fists are a bright look into what I can become.

You missed the other aspect of their misinterpretation of, 'The Flesh is Weak.' Ferrus was the first (known to them [cough, 2nd, 11th, cough ]) Primarch to die. Therefore, He was weak, and as His sons, the 10th is weak. So, to be not weak, they have to move to some extreme to achieve strength.

Thank you for making a Iron Hands video that was more then they are a bunch of cyborg people with daddy issues. I really think they are the most "40k" legion on the loyalist side. They are grim dark to the core but in the end will do anything to save the Imperium, plus they have multiple stories of marines fight beyond having a flesh and bone body, it's too sad the GW won't flesh them out a bit. Hell, they do have the easiest paint job.

Hey Bradley, I don't comment oft but your video really spoke to me. I've been through abuse of substances and it held me back for years of my life with it almost resulting in me ending my life; the way I got out of it was an expulsion of weakness and eventually making for myself some ground to rest on, shaky as it was. Until it broke. I think the reason the IH spoke to me was because they too were caught in this cycle of push and pull, running away yet their demons always catching up regardless of how many things they did. Just as an example, I was bullied in my youth cause I was fat which motivated me to lose weight, get on severe fasting, gymming, etc which whilst I do maintain- still don't rid me of the trauma, of the self image. Thank you Bradley- at the time I found this video I was again getting close to a dark point and this video was very helpful. Sincerely- you're doing good work.

Personally while I defo love the idea the Hands are fundamentally hurting, I think it's basically the community filling in the gaps GW left. The saddest thing is that while there was always going to be a Primarch that would be the "First to Die" the way in which Ferrus and the Iron Hands get side-lined so early has always sucked and has never been rectified. The only things they got was more tragedy or stories where they are the punching bags.

I’ve watched a few of these now and really enjoy your insight into these Legions. I’ve been guilty of writing the Iron Hands off as assholes who learned all the wrong lessons from their Father, but I’d never appreciated that the excision of their flesh was an attempt to excise their ability to feel; viewing it as a weakness because they can neither cope nor process their grief and the extent to which they’ve failed their Father, their brothers, and themselves. Thank you for this. I know I’ll look at them with far more compassion in the future and, hopefully, GW will as well.

I am a man who has suffered through depression and had to reconcile with my own body failing me. I was very much in the first camp of people you describe, only to sometimes swing wildly into the second. It’s funny the iron hands are the space marines I fell in love with, because the more I learned about them the more I related to them. They are a legion of men who are hurting on a deep level, but also enduring that pain and continuing to serve loyally. The iron hands stand on the very door of eye of terror and the great rift, having declared a crusade without end against the whole forces of chaos. In my 9th edition codex, When the dark sons chapter were on the verge of destruction it was the iron hands who came to reinforce them. When mordia was on the verge of annihilation by the night lords, the iron hands at full chapter strength came to save them. This isn’t me making excuses and saying the iron hands are only heroes, but there is a part of the iron hands that still wants to be. And that is why I love them as a faction. When I am at my lowest, I have a mantra I tell myself. Just keep pushing. Just keep pushing cause you’ll get out of this and you’ll get through the work and people might see your actions and be glad you did them. Because the flesh is weak but deeds endure. Amazing video.

It's stated many times throughout the lore that the Iron Hands have a very strong bond with the Mechanicus, for obvious reasons. Maybe they could lean hard into that idea and have the Iron Hands function as a defacto Chamber Militant for the Mechanicus. Basically, every time we see tech priests, we would see Iron Hands guarding them which would provide more opportunities to flesh them out (no pun intended).

That pretty much already exists in the Steel Confessors who are a successor chapters of the iron hands made in secret by the mechanicus and only separated from them because the inquisition found out about it and said helllllllll nah. Adding to your final note, something positive that comes from modern Iron Hands is Iron Father Ferrios and Chapter Master Karden Stronos are pushing for accepting the emotions long suppressed by the Iron Hands. This is causing ripples in the Iron Council. They show that the real weakness is hiding your emotions, that to ignore them to is fail yourself and your duty. To master your emotions is true strength and the best way to become the true sons of Ferrus. It's this hope that they are showing that really captures me, I have loved the Iron Hands since I first learned about them. They had the least amount of fans or love from what I could tell, so I immediately felt that I could understand them. It's the darkness that they hide and have fallen into, and this resurgence of hope that makes me love them so much. Thank you for this wonderful video, I really needed to see it.

Interesting theory and interpretation. I hope that the Black Library writers are thinking along the same lines - it would give much more depth to the legion everyone forgets about until you ask "Who's the jokiest legion of all?" and we go "Iron Hands! Ferrus Manus! Nyuk nyuk nyuk Iron Hands of the Iron Hands nyuk nyuk nyuk.".. which I'm guessing that is as far as GW thought about the Iron Hands when they first created them. Same as with the "World Eaters" led bu Angry Ron and "Space Wolves", more jokes than anything else. But over the decades, Fans and the Black Library have added depth that was never there to begin with.

You know, this actually explains what the Iron Hands are so close to the Mechanicus, despite the Mechanicus not trusting them. For all the horror, the core beliefs of the Mechanicus revolve around the idea of improving Humanity through technology. Increasing our knowledge, our longevity, our strength and power and permanence. It gets twisted around by dogma, desperation and fanaticism, but the Mechanicus, at it's pulsing steel heat, believes in being a force for good. They want to help, but don't know how. The Iron Hands though, take to technology, cybernetics mainly, to escape being human. They take to cold steel because the warmth of life, in their eyes, holds nothing for them. They don't want to be humans improved by technology, they want to be super servitors. The Mechanicus understands this and is horrified on a foundational level, and tries to help. Sadly, that dogma, desperation and fanaticism serves only to reinforce what the Iron Hands, in their pain and loss, want for themselves. Know what we need? An upright and strong Iron Hand Chapter Master, one cast in the mold of Dante. One that faces it all in a possibly doomed attempt to save his brothers and reforge them into Champions their long dead father would be proud of. It could be a story of glory and victory, or one of passion and tragedy.

Iron Hands and the White Scars really do deserve some light and love, compare to mainstream Dark Angels or for frick's sake Space Wolves. (I don't hate them, but seriously, GW, maybe if you give some attention to other chapters and light them up, maybe people will buy them too?)

The feeling and the description of mental illlness... this is the best video you've ever made. Coming from having mental issues. Bi polar and ADHD. Among others. It's just an amazing video. This video hit on a personal level that I did not expect. Well made, well, done. About the relationship between Primarch and Legion. Could it be said that the Iron Hands fell as they did because Ferus Manos really did die, but the Salamanders did not because, with Vulkan being a perptual, he can't ever really die, keeps coming back, and may still be out there in the galaxy in the settings present???

Having had depression for as long as I can remember, I have always felt a connection to the Iron Hands but I haven't collected an army of them because I'm a weird way it would be a physical reminder of that and that is why I collect the Dark Angels (don't laugh) because not of who the Dark Angels are, but because of what the Order and the Legion is supposed to represent, honour and duty but in reality, I have become like the Iron Hands and unfortunately and incredibly ironically, I fell in a way that Fulgrim would recognise in addiction issues. The Iron Hands deserve better from GW, the Black Library and the community itself because in a grimdark setting, they represent what existing in such a place would be for it's uncountable inhabitants. One day, I hope the Gorgon returns and heals his tragic sons.

A fantastic video! I've recently begun to learn about 40K, and the Iron Hands are a group I've begun to gravitate towards them. From what i have gleaned is that the Iron Hands are a legion defined by dear, both Ferrus and the Iron Hands, and this fear leads to this rage and depression. I'm really glad to see someone else sees these guys as more than jerks. Edit: I feel an interesting idea for building and Iron Hands army would be to make them the secind part of the saying, "But deeds endure." I dint know how, but i feel it would be possible and good

Since I discovered Warhammer and got into the tradition there have always been 3 legions that I instantly went crazy knowing everything about and their respective primarchs and the one that I would never expect to have any sympathy or any “bond” would be precisely with the Iron Hands and I never knew what it was from. in a way, after all, as you said in the video, they are a forgotten legion. Man, after watching the video I could understand that the reason for my interest in them is that I actually see myself as one of them, ironically I discovered the franchise after losing my father to Covid and having to take care of my mother and depression of her with me, having just started college and being only 19 years old at the time, let the parallels be made lol hahahaah You probably won't get to see this comment, but thank you from the bottom of my soul for making this video. Just as he is the portrait of my primarch, he placed me in front of a mirror and I could see the depravity that is currently in me, although it didn't solve anything or make it hurt less. I thank you cousin "in the name of the emperor"

Great video, thank you!!! The Iron Hands are depressed yes, but they are not sad and suicidal. They are angry. The Iron Hands believe Farrus' anger lead to his death. So they tried to remove it for the last 10,000 years. Most recently they've strived to embrace their emotions (anger) as a weapon. You can see this reflected in the name of a number of their Stratagems.

Honestly, I think the iron hands need a book where at the brink of destruction, the legion of the Damned show up. But not because the iron hands are holding out to the last, no, they're fighting but they're willingly embracing the death, and as the last 10 Marines are about to embrace Oblivion, the legion arrive alongside a headless giant with Fire surging from the neck and radiant silver arms glowing from the flames light. In that moment, as the battle is won, the giant speaks of the disgrace his sons have brought to his name. Heck maybe even showing the memory of Ferrus manis and Vulkan talking. Something to rekindle their purpose to live on.

Actual goosebumps. NOW I get it. Now I get WHY I am an Iron Hands fan. Like, they caught my eye as soon as I got into 40k. I literally have every joytoy's Iron hands figure released as of yet (yeah cringe ik). I recently finished reading Voice of Mars and OH BOY IT ALL MAKES SENSE. The Iron Hands are cold. Literally. When you enter their landships you see steam as you exhale. They abhor any emotion... but GOD FORBID you make them mad, oh boy, they're just going to start ripping apart anything they see like a poor soul that has fallen to the Black Rage. GW really did them dirty. Malkaan Feirros (pretty much a brand-new character) has a mini, BUT STRONOS DOESNT? Excuse me?! Out here hoping my boys will get some proper love in the future. We are the Iron Tenth! We raise the Storm and bring the Hammer down!

Iron Hands are my favorite Chapter and so many people get them wrong, because they don't focus one the Kardan Stronos lore. that is their newer lore and his deeds are trying to rise the Iron Hands back to glory and has been doing it. It's sad that most of the Iron hand lore like shortly after the heresy. and like the really 40k. but in the 41st they are rising, they even found guardsmen they see as worth of their protection. The Iron Guard. Remember the teachings of Kardan Stronos.. "Though Iron makes us strong, without Souls we are nothing." not to mention The Primarch of the Ultramarines when he saw the Iron Hands he was in retreat, and Eldar Seer told Gilliam that no matter what he did he was going to lose a sector... but the Iron Hands took the Primaris and lunched the Iron Crusades. working the Iron Guard, and admech retaking the whole sector. Gilliam smiled as the Iron Hands left know they if any chapter could do it, it would be the Iron Hands, he saw Ferrus Manus within them. there is still hope for the Iron Hands, and that is why i love them. they are waking up. they are becoming what Ferrus wanted for them even though it slowly. Personally i kind awish they find a dreadnaught from 30k or something and that kinda become their Bjorn the Fellhanded lol. a Dreadnaught that guides them as ferrus should have.

Just for say, I love your videos. But my favorite series of yours is this one. With "What people misunderstand with this legion", i lean more about some légion/chapter and i learned to respect them more. I learn about the real power of the salamanders. I was surprised to really discover what are the White Scar (one of the legion a know the least about). And, know, I understand better the sadness of the Iron Hand. I love this series and cannot wait to see the next episode. Im so excited to see what you would have to say about the Thousand Sons. Also, if you have something to say about the Blood Raven.

Personally, I think that the Iron Hands can be awesome, but they shouldn't have just be shoehorned into being the "asshole" legion and the whole flesh is weak thing, especially at the cost of their legion brothers. Because that's what really bothers me. After watching a video from Majorkill about the Iron Hands, some of the "the flesh is weak" guys were total assholes and left one of the only marines of their legion who was pushing against such a ideology to die, which does make them look like colossal assholes. Because I do sympathize with people who have mental illness, but I do know that it's as much on them, if not more so, to do something to try to help themselves than it is on others who can help them.

not so fun fact: what little modern lore we got on the Iron Hands says the iron council is trying to math out what is the greatest threat to the imperium, so that they can call all iron hands and there successors to go commit suicide, by killing off this threat. think the what is said about Thunder Warriors, but on purpose.
