This video is the best example of the meme: other Fandoms want to live in their fantasy setting. WH40k fans do not want to live in anything close to 40k.

One of the things I always respected about the Gaunt’s Ghosts novels was that they frequently depicted the horrible impact of war on civilians.

I think the red thirst is 1 of the things that drove Horus to the Heresy. After all, he knew the thunder warriors got replaced, and 2 of the legions wiped out, and he learned that several legions had hidden gene-flaws (while others would be unsuited for peace for other reasons, see the Night Lords). So he probably feared that a similar fate might befall his own legion.

I've always thought that 40k (and Warhammer Old World RIP) fiction did have a lot of occasions where they comveyed the fear and helplessness, both of combatants and non-combatants, quite effectively. The authors were very well describing the paranoia of fearing your fellow citizens (who could be a mutant, a heretic, a psyker who could suddenly control you utterly or open a literal gate to hell) before most of the western world started feeling the same way about those next to them in the wake of suicide bombs, terror attacks or random "mental health episodes" involving an assault rifle or machete. It's strange how that paranoid fiction became reality for so many.

I read this thing on Quora where someone asked why, outside of sales and marketing, 40k and Warhammer in general leans so heavily on grimdark. The best answer I saw was that it is because of a cultural difference between average American views on war vs British and European views. Americans tend to more often than not view war, while grim and many times dark, optimistically: "As dark as the tunnel is, there is still light at the end," and that kind of thing. Brits and Europeans, the Quora writer argued, view war more as a dark and oppressive time where barely if not any at all good comes out at the end. Everyone is broken, the world is turned upside down, and very little positive outcomes are found.

It also must be remembered that the truly epic ruins of World War II did not touch us here in America, and as such we did not have to undertake perennial rebuilding from nearly nothing. Again, this is a repeat of something not uncommon in that part of the world up to that point. Something like this will have a lasting effect on people who hope and pray that this does not happen again-until it does, as Ukraine is finding out now. The perennial penchant for internecine warfare in Europe was a definitive reason why the colonies wanted so much not to be involved in squabbles across the pond, yet involved we became. It is beyond wonderful that everyone over there is not literally at each other's throats.

Titans, devastating to the enemy, overkill to the unarmed. There is no message to be left, only the cleaning of the slate as your entire way of life is retconned to the very dirt that carried the foundations of your way of life...well, maybe a crater for those lucky enough to get a grave marker, anyway. Even the Titan that bares your destruction will forget you, and the worst part? Your world didn't impart anything on its hide, no final struggle, not even a tiny bullet hole or dent. Just complete, and utter, nothing. The worst part? The whole time it's happening, you'll never know why. To think this happens regularly on many forgotten worlds, woe to the unprepared.

The true horror of warhammer 40K is they failed. They are very aware of what they could be. The ruins of their dreams surround them. But they can never have the power to completely fix it. The wound went too deep. The rot has taken hold. The echos of your gods wrathful last breath have stretched across 10,000 years and you are powerless to before it. Your waking hours are a ruined dream, your sleep is full of countless cruelties laughing with hungry eyes.

God, that was well written. I agree - they are forever stuck with the reminders of what almost was, when they stood on the precipice of a vastly different path. The character and resolve of humanity's demigods were tested, and found wanting. Now as a result, the shattered remnants of the god emperor's dream for humanity lie scattered and stagnating about the blighted chasm bisecting humanity's cradle. A cosmic scar on the soul of the human race, a reminder of the flawed nature of man, and the gods they create.

They didnt retcon the Ynarri. They may even have the last Crone Blade out in the open where they can get to it. It's possible that Fulgrim is carrying the last Crone Blade. What you have to remember about GW is that they actually rarely retcon. They just stop mentioning things. This does not mean its gone. Take the planet Angelis, where GorkaMorka is. It hasn't been mentioned by GW in almost 30yrs. Angelis is still on the Galactic Map.

If the Emepror leaves The Golden Throne, or it's mechanism stops working, it will be the end. Warp Ridt under Terra/Imperial Dungeon will reopen, when Terra is lost, the Imperium is lost. The humanity as a more or less united fraction is lost, gone. It's the End.

What if Instead of carving out a safe territory for himself and humanity in the Warp. He pours in all of his psychic and warp essence into his skeletal body on the Golden Throne Reviving himself and walking among humanity once more Thus forever leaving the Immaterium and he becomes like the Ca'Tan, a god of the material universe. From there he will create a barrier between the Material & the Immaterial universe, forever dividing the two and mankind is free from Chaos and can now rule the Galaxy

Better version of the final showdown...Slaanesh shows up to the fight, Big E and Khorne both turn on her, and proceed to beat her into an iron plate, trapping her in a mirror to watch...the other side, unable to do or say anything. Then they continue.

The thought that what nuked Nurgle's Garden might be a 10k year old version of the Tau's new Greater Good Goddess had never occurred to me. I always figured Big E's splintered mind was just his spirit breaking up into all those shamans that offed themselves. Personally I think he doesn't want to be taken off the Throne 'cuz currently he'd end up instantly Dark Kinging everything.

I would add, more nobles fell into the 'bad' category, since they were raised from birth to believe themselves to be better people. You can still see that today in britain, were someones accent alone can put them in a box.

A few points to consider: 1. The comparatively small number of humans in the Tau Empire have already created a god of the Greater Good. That suggests it’s inevitable that emperor worship has created a God Emperor of Mankind in the warp. 2. That there is some distinction between Him On Earth and the various versions of the God Emperor in the warp does not mean they are separate. All warp “gods” are composite entities born of the myriad thoughts and feelings of trillions of living beings. The God Emperor fed by human worship would be the same. 3. Worship comes with a price. To be empowered by the beliefs and passions of others is also to be shaped by those thoughts and feelings. I suspect this is why the Emperor in 30k was so desperate to avoid emperor worship. He knew it would consume him and transform him into what others want him to be. 4. The City of Dust is just a pocket dimension being used by the King in Yellow and apparently it was the warp reflection of the city of Queen Mab. It might be linked to the Inevitable City, a warp realm which began to manifest during the siege of Terra, but that’s rampant speculation. I suspect there are many heavenly realms in the warp created by the beliefs and desires of humanity, but most humans live in hive cities in 40k. This means the most common human vision of heaven would be an idealized hive city of some kind. Addendum: for an idealized of what visiting the warp reflections of cities might be like try reading The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath by H.P. Lovecraft. It’s a short story and available for free online.

I think he is a combination of shards of the old ones, which is why he can be loving, but cold, he is a god but not, and why he could defeat the void dragon almost bare handed.

here us the difference between the emperor and the eldar and chaos gods,gork/mork,even the tau one,,, They emerged as gods. Big E BECAME one. And while yeah he was certainly never a mere man and was above humanity as you can get while remaining mortal, imagine how a mind, however extraordinary, would adjust to that state? I would think it would take untold amount of time to adjust and we all know time is funny in the warp

I think the Emperor is as close to becoming a god as a being of his caliber can be currently. The only reason why he hasn't fully apotheosized is because he is still holding on to the very last parts of his humanity.
