It is interesting that the last concession abandoned was the Italian one (1947). Among other things, the old buildings remain (barracks and palaces in the fascist style and villas in the Liberty style as seen in Viareggio on the Tuscan coast). Chinese government, very intelligently, has restored the neighborhood (it didn't even remove the fasces and the portraits of Mussolini) and transformed it into a touristic Little Italy

Il Campigiano Thanks for posting this because I had never heard of this settlement before. So, I looked it up and read about it on the Internet. Italian Fascist architecture was ofttimes quite wonderful: Just look at Asmara in Eritrea that is renowned as one of the most architecturally significant cities in all of Africa. It is great that the Chinese government was cultured and sophisticated enough in this instance to preserve and restore this historical area.

The europeans basically had an addiction of "haha, your land mine now" for over two centuries so the title does not surprise me. First things i know about the european influence on China before i watch this video is that the British Empire colonized Hong Kong and the Portuguese Empire colonized Macao, plus Germany colonized a bit and i think no other european power colonized stuff from China but they just had spheres of influence, and there was the boxer rebellion by people from China rising up to root out the europeans, but that is all i know.

Two centuries? That's not even close to reality. The first wave of European colonialism start with the conquest of Ceuta in 1415 by the Portuguese, followed by the well known arrival of Columbus to America in 1492 all the way to the hand over of Macau in 1999. So close to six centuries.

Opium wars in quick summary: Brits love tea, like a lot. So much that they were sending all their silver to China for it(the only payment they accepted) To correct the huge trade deficit that was bankrupting them, rather than quit drinking so much tea they started selling opium in China. Once everyone was hooked the Chinese government saw how destructive opium was and outlawed it. Like any drug dealer the Brits didn’t like anyone muscling in on their turf so Opium War. China lost, tried again to outlaw opium, bam Second Opium War.

The Opium War happened because European powers had a trade deficit with China and they had nothing China wanted, or needed, so The British East India Company began illegally importing Opium. China banned all imports, Europe went to war and China lost because despite being powerful they hadn’t been at war with their neighbors, or anyone for a very long time. Europe made China sign a lot of unequal treaties forcing the country opened and still imported Opium….Two things about this you see today #1 Hong Kong was a British territory on a 100year lease and & #2 China is only just now regaining the power it once had in the 19th century. It invests in it’s military today to prevent this occurring ever again. (Very short version if you have questions please let me know).

Your description of the invasion, occupation of Beijing and Tianjing during the suppression of the Boxer uprising is somewhat low key. This subject is taught in Chinese Schoolsin great detail. The troops made the Qu Ing "Empress" and her son, later the last Qing Emperor, flee Beijing. The troops set fire to the Summer Palace and it was burnt to the ground. This is causing a lot of ill-feeling in the Chinese polulation, while in the West, it is barely mentioned in the schools at all.

@@kholeka8475 Saying that the west teaches us is factually wrong. "The West" doesn't exist as one entity and is just a loose collective of states who share similar values and a certein degree of cooperation. But internally those states act independent from one another. Education in Germany for instance is handled by local ministries. Also: most of what is taught in schools has little to do with factual knowledge but rather cognitive knowledge (for instance: How much equals 1 + 2) so scepticism here has no real place. But even with regards to factual knowledge schools are actually quite reliable given to their official position with high levels of checking.

Actually the first European holding in China was probably Marco Polo's house and the city that was given to him to rule. They were Venetian (Italian) diplomats but didn't really manage those properties for a European power directly, it was the Chinese Emperor of that time who awarded them with such possessions in exchange for their valuable presence there.

However, if it had not been for the Mughals, India would been colonised long before. When the Mughals were there, the British did not dare to colonise India. The British were waiting for the Mughals to fall and only after that they were able to colonise India. In China the Qing empire was there as result even an alliance of 8 European powers, including one American and Japanese empire. Total of 10 foreign powers could not colonise China. This just shows how strong China was. And ohh if they could they would definitely colonise China too. Remeber the British tried to colonise Shanghai but failed.

Excellent video. I was flabbergasted when I found out the details of what Great Britain did to China in the 19th century. Sounds dreadful with the gunboat diplomacy, selling opium to it's citizens, creating an unfair treaty and then annexing Hong Kong. On a positive note I wouldn't dream of this now, it was another century! Yet I can understand why the Chinese may have called it a century humiliation, although Britain did hand Hong Kong back in a better condition than first found at least. Last point I hope there isn't still animosity. For example I don't have animosity with Germany for WW2 and have largely good relations now. As a British person, I know my country has been invaded for thousands of years and I hold no grudges, hopefully China feels the same way too! ;-)

True. Hongkong Island was "rightful" British land and could have even remain after the botched return of Hongkong. But it is such a small area without the New Territories there is no use to that. If only the British established real democracy with free elections and rule of law way way earlier in Hongkong and not just in the last years.

You are incorrectly pronouncing the name Shanghai 上海. You say «Shan gai», it should be «Shang hai», with the h sounding as in the word ham. Shang 上 means “on top of” or “upon” and Hai 海 means “sea” or “big lake”, so Shanghai means “upon the Sea”, and it refers to a time when the city appeared to be on land that was on the Sea. Nowadays you can see that effect looking from the old British section onto the newer section of the city, which seems to be on an island at sea level.
