Portugal not only was the first to establish a navy but also became the first global super power. And only due to the fact that UK had an alliance with Portugal did the UK became the next one. If it wouldn't be for the treaty, Portugal would had crushed every britsh attempt to became so powerfull, because at this time we ruled the whole sea and all the coast from ceuta down to cape of good hope over to bermuz and india and japan. Not only that but we actually helped the british, gave them they're first colonie in india, maps and telled them how to build ship's. If it wasn't for that, no british ship would had ever reachd india. Keep in mind that the portuguese, kept the mamluks, the ottomans, venicia and genova in check, fought many wars to protect and controll the sea routes before UK had even joined the game.

Happily, in general, pine forests are fairly well adapted to wildfires. In fact some species require fire to reproduce. As long as loggers didn't go in and clear out all the remnants (exposing the soil and leaching out nutrients) the forest will recover quickly. Where I live there has been examples of both, and wherever the forest was left alone after a fire, fresh growth is almost impenetrably dense. Areas where crews went in and "salvaged" (aka completely remove any timber remaining, from blackened stumps to intact trees) nothing but sand remains.

Another striking tech from our Navy was the breech loaded naval guns as an upmost upgrade towards the nozzle loaded ones. After each one has fired, the recoil forces the gun to move backwards and then needed to be rearmed again, taking perhaps more than a minute; also with the danger of getting to much high temperature that might cause premature gunpowder deflagration. Carrying two or more breeches per wapon, they could be cooled, dried out and reloaded for the next shot at a higher rate of fire. Thanks a lot for this video :)

4:45 Wrong, a square rigged ship is better downwind, but worse upwind. So I would not say it was "more maneuverable" It is the triangular foresail that gives upwind ability, and I am guessing that the ship you mentioned had more of those than former designs. An improved hull could have also helped.

Another great videoç Just a small thing. Under the Tomar Cortes agreement, Portugal never lost independence to Spain. Bothe countries would remain independent under the same king (Iberian Union). Portugal remained with its empire, the language remained portuguese, currency continued separated, taxes had to be approved by the portuguese cortes and all offices and honoures of state could only be occupied by portuguese nobles. So same king, two independent kingdoms.

This video is actually one of the fews on KZbin quite accurate. During a time where everything was kept secret so the other countries didn't know about anything, it's interesting how the portuguese manage to mislead many people for a century and then lost most of the control to other major powers (Spain, Britain, and after the Dutch and French)... but that was a result of a small population, expeling the Jews and other bad decisions. It's still amazing how a small country was the first (or one of the first) in so many things... The first navy, the first to be in every continent, the first to abolish slavery (even though we started the trades to America), and others... We traded all over the world and we're the pioneers of globalization. Unfortunately since the 19th century our fame quickly disapeared and now we're famous thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo which is kind of sad...

From a born and raised Portuguese: FYI: After the technology jump of world's navigation with "Henrique" (Dom Henrique) hapenned the discovery of the North America's continent from the theories of Columbus. His theory was that the shorter and quickest way to reach "the orient" or India, for it's spyces, was straight forward from the Iberian coast through the Athlantic. At this time, Portuguese knowledge was already greater than this theories. Columbus, before presenting his theories to Spain, did it to the Portuguese government who quickly denied that enterprise to Columbus stating that the theory was wrong. They were absolutely right!! The Spanish conquest reach the coast of the North America's continent by a mistake that was bought by those who didn't know better and believed the Columbus theories. Another note: The Portuguese people in the "discovery period" of Dom Henrique had defined goals and they were not about discovering or conquering other lands and people. Portuguese people were merchants not conquerers. The quickest way to reach the commercial stream was through the Mediterraneum through to were today is Turquey. This meant that if Portuguese wanted to reach it they needed to travel by the sea (Mediterraneum) or land through a large number of countries. Those options were abslolutely out of the question because they were robbed and killed before they could accomplish the mission. So they plotted the best scenario possible by travelling around Africa. The result of their success was that, at that time, Lisbon was the "Metropole of commerce in Europe" and we had all kinds of religions and cultures arriving to Portugal to purchase the spyces among other things that in our days we all have in our gastronomies and culture. When religion was generating wars in other parts of the world, here in Lisbon they were all at peace and enjoying himselves. Another fun fact: Portuguese people, through their travels, was the one that introduced gun weapons to Japan and our relations still have an impact on culture. The words "Arigato" in japanese and the portuguese "obrigado" are an example of the culture evolution of both languages. Conclusion: These are facts recorded in history and it is a shame that this important facts are not brought to light. My regards Ricardo Martins

Also Joāo Lavrador which went up the Canadian coast and to this day it’s called Labrador and actually have a dog breed named for that area. Otherwise good job. On a side note, my uncle served as the chaplain on the Sagres while he was in the navy and stated that they sailed many times to Brazil only on sails.
