GREAT VIDEO...............Man you got some real skills and experience to be able to make a grignard reagent with no ether in the pot at the get go. My first grignard i did not make enough ether so i did not put any in the pot at the get go. Just in the ethylbromide. I made sure i had 2 moles(equivilant) to form the ligands and 2 mL extra but that was it. I could not control it good. It just got way to hot to easy. Flooded my condenser a few times to the top. I used ethylbromide and CO2 to make propanoic acid. Got a terrible yield. Next time i did it with ethyl bromide and acetone to make tert pentanol. It worked out a lot better. I made sure to submerge my Mg in ether before adding the alkyl bromide. But i do not have a lot of experience in grignard reactions. So far i have only done 2. But at least now i got a bulky alcohol so i can make a bulky base/alkoxide. You know i just take my Mg right before i use it and put it in a morter/pestle and not as much crush the metal up but scratch it alot. Admittedly i only did it twice but both times worked quick/good and did not need the I2 catalyst to remove any oxide layer on the Mg

Thank you! I am a second year grad student in org synth and am planning to generate a grignard this week for a step in my synthesis. This was very helpful

I'm happy to hear that you found this useful. Be sure to dry the glassware prior to use. Also, the reaction may start (and heat up) while you add the halide dropwise to the magnesium. That often happens, but didn't in my case, probably because my addition rate was very cautiously slow.

Thank you very much for your informative videos. Any possibility of a vacuum distillation video in the future?

Hey! I was setting up a grignard with 2-bromopropane and I did not use the glassware setup you used and used THF instead of ether. I also did not put it in an hot water bath after adding all of the haloalkane. For some reason the reaction did not seem to go. Any tips?

QUESTION.............If you want to make an alkyl lithium reagent would it be made in the same way as a grignard reagent?????????? Does it involve 2 diethyl ether ligands like it does with a grignard?????????? Can i just get an alkyl halide and ether and drip it on some lithium????? And then drip in some carbonyl compound?????????????

You made big mistake on the beginning - you turned on stirring… this is usually inhibiting for the start of the reaction, If u would made it on 100M scale or larger , You would have been surprised „a little bit” 🤣. After adding 1/20 of halo-reagent you should notice bubbles on the surface of reaction mixture and temp should raise near to the boiling point, this is a sign of reaction start, otherwise DO NOT ADD MORE halogen because of risk of violent temperature buildup and fountain all over the place 😂😂😂
