Walt hadn't slept in more than 24 hours. He had been busy, trying to get the defective mark 19 on the Humvee to operate properly. It malfunctioned several times in combat. Colbert had told him to get some shuteye, but Walt insisted on fixing the gun. In the end, he only succeeded, after Lt. Fick managed scrounge some lube. Right before this scene, Fick gets word of insurgent attacks, which visibly made Walt nervous. Also notice how unsure the driver was. Probably the first he'd seen something like this, resulting in insecure, jerky movements. So: it's really a combo of logistical failures, combat stress and basic human miscalculation. Pawel Szajda's acting + the hints spread around = epic content.

Brad switching gears from angry and reprimanding to compassionate and reassuring as soon as he sees how Walt is affected is amazing. Shows how much of a leader he is that he reacted first as a sergeant, then assessed how his guy was doing, and still went team leader on him, but in a different way to accommodate what the new situation was. Fucking astounding.

A recent article on PTSD sheds new light on this whole new light on the subject. She argued that shame, rather than fear, is often the motivator. One of her cases were some soldiers manning a check point. A group of cars kept closing, ignoring all warnings. Per SOP, the soldiers then engages the vehicles, killing drivers and stopping the vehicles. Men, women and children, no weapons, no explosives. Several of those troops were later treated for PTSD by the author. She found a common theme in that they all were ashamed that they could not stop the cars without killing civilians, even though they followed all standing SOP.

This is why I'm ashamed of how some people treat our military members. They had an extremely hard job, and were forced to make life changing/ending choices in a split second. It's important for them to know their country stands behind them no matter what. They are human and make mistakes. But if it was your life on the line and your fellow soldiers lives on the line, would you not act? To all military active and vets, I support and thank you for everything you do for our country

so this is actually a lot worse in the book. when this happens, one of the rounds entered the mans eye socket and deflected upwards, entering his frontal cortex and blowing the front part of his brain out of his skull. it effectively lobotomized him, and didnt kill him but instead turned him into a vegetable immediately. it took him 2-3 hours to die, as he just sat in the front seat of the car doing nothing but slowly breathing because of the natural reflex of the body.

On a personal note to add insult to injury, we made dam sure the area my guys controlled was safe or else. Well one of the first things Saddam did while in charge was... nationalize the oil industry. Meaning no oil flowing into foreign markets, just being used for Iraq purposes. Guessing Uncle Sam didn't like that, I mean out of all the despotic regimes in the world we chose that one. It's not like NK doesn't exist or Indonesia, Saudis (trade with US), Burma, Singapore on and on. They had no WMDS, no proof of WMDS. Not even a smidgen of evidence. In-fact they later said they their where in fact no WMDS. I doubt it was out of the goodness of their hearts that the Bush administration declared war, it was money. Plain and simple, keep the oil flowing it's the life blood of countries and empires alike these days.

What a powerful scene. At first you think, as Colbert thinks “wtf are you doing?!”, and you’re blaming the shooter for making the obvious wrong decision. But the look at the shooters face instantly showing regret and confusion, and his words “they kept coming”. And it takes a moment for Colbert and us to understand, and ask him if he’s alright. It’s that fog of war. That confusion. And then you have the other type of marines in the scene who those young kids who are just so desensitized to war and death. This show was incredible. It was so much more than a military show. It was an in-depth philosophical study of war and soldiers. I wish more people give it a chance in the future. But I’m sure the show just looks like a military action show, with young degenerate, foul mouthed soldiers to most people.

To say it was "stupid" I think is a bit harsh, tragic and unfortunate are better words. Stupid implies Walt was negligent and careless, and throughout the show he is the complete opposite of that. The show hints that Walt was extremely sleep deprived going into this scene. Being sleep deprived in some ways is like being intoxicated, your judgement and senses are impaired. You get anxious. If it had been a standard warning shot that Brad had fired then Walt would have been fine. They fire warning shots then shoot to kill, changing it to fire a warning grenade wait for the potential bombers to get closer, fire another warning shot, wait for them to get even closer and then shoot to kill is gonna confuse anyone who hasn't slept in 24hrs. The driver wasn't killed instantly. The bullet went through his eye and out the top of his head paralysing him. The platoon wanted to try to get him to a hospital for treatment but permission was denied. The Marines then had to drive past him, with Walt sat in Trombley's seat just a few metres away and he couldn't look. The man took a day to die. Afterwards, Walt would sit in the Humvee with his SAW in his lap not even touching it. It's heartbreaking the stuff that everyone in that war had to go through.

Mike Brase Yeah I get the feeling that veterans have this view on society as ungrateful little shits. And to a certain extent yeah we are, we don’t know the chaos that happens half a world away, and it never reaches us unless we have family or friends serving. You did serve to let us keep our way of life yes, and while I never served (Soon will get conscripted, Israel is like that) I think it’s better that the majority doesn’t have to live a tour in Iraq or Afghanistan and experience all those horrible things, let alone be in the role you were. I’m glad to hear you have a daughter, hopefully she’ll be successful and a valuable member of society. No doubt she already has an awesome dad who can teach her a lot about life. Not that I’m an expert but I’ve worked in a kindergarten and a school for a few months on breaks from school and I’ve seen that the kids who were most mature for their age were picked up by their dad sometimes and they came in uniform. One of them was even a Lt. Col.. Wonder what he did in his service. Thank you for sharing. I tend to go around asking veterans about their service, I’m not a journalist but I do want to get an insight to what life is like there where safety and mental stability isn’t a certainty.

So basically everything that was going on with the 249 Gunner who shot at the car. He had been awake for days and was not doing so good mentally, this is hinted at in multiple scenes before this event. Dumbed down, the Car was coming at them and not deviating from their course so the Marine shot at them, skipping a few steps of their current ROE which was most likely to only escalate force if directly threatened by the enemy. After he shot him you can clearly see he's fucking devastated from it because he most likely wasn't cool with the fact that he just shot and killed a civilian.

According to Cortez, Abeer “kept squirming and trying to keep her legs closed and saying stuff in Arabic,” as he and Barker took turns holding her down and raping her. Cortez testified that Abeer heard the gunshots in the room in which her parents and little sister were being held, causing her to scream and cry even more as she was being violently raped by the men. Green then emerged from the room saying, "I just killed them, all are dead". Green, who later said the crime was "awesome", then raped Abeer and shot her in the head several times. After the massacre, Barker poured petrol on Abeer and the soldiers set fire to the lower part of the girl's body, from her stomach down to her feet. Barker testified that the soldiers gave Spielman their bloodied clothes to burn and that he threw the AK-47 used to murder the family into a canal. They left to "celebrate" their crimes with a meal of chicken wings." Stop defending rapists. The US army raped and pillaged Iraq in direct violation of international law and without a UN mandate.

@futureblue49
@futureblue49 7 жыл бұрын
A car doesn't stop just because the tires go out. Not to mention, even if the cars actually do stop dead in their tracks when the tires pop. Now you have a road filling up with cars that can't move. Meaning that's a ton of man hours and resources that will be wasted having to move them. And what if one of those cars has a bomb in it? Now those Marines have to come out of a defensive position into the open and get up close to a potential car bomb. Shut up and leave the military tactics to the military.
@Blacksherman20
@Blacksherman20 7 жыл бұрын
The man isn't wrong jackass. Any sane civilian would stop at the sight of road spikes, especially when armed grunts are behind it waving them off. So, spikes do serve another purpose, and that is DETERRENCE. Anyone who doesn't do a quick U-turn after seeing the spikes should be considered a possible threat and subject to a hail of gunfire. So why don't you shut up too you self-righteous fuck.
@futureblue49
@futureblue49 7 жыл бұрын
The idiot coming to the defense of someone you don't even know, but I'm the self-righteous one? And guess what. The military does use road spikes but they are only ever used in military bases and never in combat. "Any sane civilian would stop at the sight of road spikes" That is assuming that all civilians know what every version of road spikes look like. Which do think is more recognizable to every person in the world? Every version and variation of road spikes or a road block of armed soldiers? Here was a road block of Marines armed to the teeth and that still didn't stop them. Yet you seem to think they are going to put focus on looking at the road looking for road spikes that may or may not even be there. I would love to see that scenario. "Well Ahkmid, I was going to drive towards that giant road block of armed Marines that could clearly kill us if they think we are a threat but they have road spikes. And Allah knows how much more we fear road spikes rather than a giant road block of armed Marines that could clearly kill us if they think we are a threat." Does that reasoning sound stupid, yea because it is.

They are trained to deal with civilians. I’m not sure if you are aware, but the people in the Middle East have a tendency to blow shit up, especially by driving cars straight towards a convoy. IED deaths have plummeted due to military personnel taking action like this, the people in the Middle East know better at this point so if they are that ballsy to drive towards a convoy like that, bomber or not, they have a death wish.

The National Guards job is first and foremost.... To Guard the Nation. Literally. Respond to natural disasters and defend against an attack on America. In pressing times they will be deployed.

@@Rams4life94 the guard is deployed year round, have been since early 2ks more than ever. Support roles mostly, but lots of infantry/mp/cav going into combat zones. 28th ID in PA was around for the invasion of iraq.

@@alexh4398 I know that. My stepfather was NG and went to Iraq in 2005-2006 with the 42nd ID. That doesn't mean that their main mission isn't to actually defend the nation when the regular military cannot.

In reality its because you were lied to about why you were being sent there. And these youngsters believed it.

I love all these arm chair generals trying to lay blame on a marine who made a call that he was a danger to his unit, you weren't there, you weren't holding the gun... So what ever you say has as much value and weight as a dog's turd

Just to clarify - In order to earn the privilege of having an opinion on the slaying of a civilian, you need to be the one pulling the trigger? How does that work?

폰 에튜와르트게르드 오토 비스마르크 Some countries have very evident military and the population are used to their presence. I grew up in a heavily militarized area and don’t react very much to SWAT or armed officers. My wife (from elsewhere) gets uncomfortable in the presence of armed police.

Sometimes when you join a killing machine that is designed for invasion and mass murdering, you shouldn’t insult and make your teammates feel bad for shooting someone,

You don't talk shit, you gotta acknowledge that you just killed a civilian. The jokes and shit talk are a coping mechanism. You see it that entire time, its just here that someone was real messed up over it
