My favorite line from Sixta is in the last episode, the marines get letters from home, some miss home, others angry of what they receive. Sixta sees the men battle worn and tired, he looks to Gunny says, "If moral gets any lower tell me, and I'll give em about the grooming standard." and winks. Made me realize that the grooming standard was an excuse to shout at the marines, so they'll all have someone in common to dislike, and feel more comradery with each other.

For those unfamiliar with the book and the resulting series, the Sergeant Major spent time giving the men in the battalion a hard time as a way to distract them from the situation at hand, and to give them a common focal point for their aggression(to prevent them from getting after one another). Obviously, the writers saw it as a good way to insert some comic relief into the series as well.
@wilhard4510 жыл бұрын
SgtMaj doesn't appear into a unit table of organization until the battalion level. It darn sure doesn't look like a battalion of Marines to me. What civis don't understand is that during combat deployments the stress levels is extremely high among men. This may end up with tensions between the men which may end up in personal feuds among the men which jeopardizes the trust and combat effectiveness. To combat this usually a senior enlisted tends to act this way to give the men something else to direct their anger towards. So instead of hating on each other, they relieve their stress and anger on this specific person.

+Urban Marksman Having been on the deployment that these men were in (though not in the same unit, I wasn't Recon or anything), I have to disagree with basically everything you said. Morale is usually not kept up at all, except by the small unit commanders. Sixta was just a jackass and he created friction with no actual purpose. In the USMC, senior SNCOs frequently do this, because they actually believe that things like field day and grooming standards promote good order and discipline. This is especially true for SNCOs that didn't fight in Afghanistan or Desert Storm before OIF; many of them maintained a garrison mindset going into the war.

Marines are like a pack of vicious wolves dying to unleash their fury on the enemy. When there is no enemy to fight, the wolves will turn on each other. Sixta is simply redirecting that energy onto himself in order to maintain unit morale.

How many years have you served in the Marines? I only had one First Sergeant that I genuinely respected. This is nothing but a warped sense of misunderstanding of what happens in war and treating Marines/soldiers in a very transactional way. Your scared spitless or pissed off at something someone did to you and your unit. You begin trying to figure out how this insurgent killed your buddy or people getting wounded so badlky, they leave your unit permanently, and then have to deal with this knuckle head? He has the same leadership style that a newly minted corporal will have. Probably near thirty years in his career.

@@waynetang1763 Intended to reply sooner. This happened several times and not all were in highschool but none of them ever served. This one person told me this was the only way to do things. He came fairly aggressive about it until I asked him if he ever went to PLDC (Primary Leadership Development Course-first NCO school in the Army) or the NCO academies in the Marines? Finally asked if they ever served? No-kid was in eleventh grade. I told him to STFU because I did five years in the Marines and discharged honorably after my contract ended-before he was ever born. As I said, this happened more than a couple times so I do tend to come very aggressively. Sorry dude.

@@ObsidianLazarus If you are a Corporal-you are god and this is how many act. Won't hide it but my friends and I played that character. The understanding would be most would mellow because lets face it-most corporals put rank on at the ages of 20-23 and I fell right in that range. Point would be you would eventually mellow a bit with experience and figuring out the best way to approach situations requiring your attention. Most mature and grow out of that attitude-most people do. Some do not. When in the Army, when I earned my first NCO stripe as a Supply Sgt in a Recon squadron, people kept asking when I was going to start roughing privates and specialist's up. When they explained that-was like, "been there, done that, Corporals in the Marines are gods."

Put my head down, went in the Army as an E-3 (I had college), left the Army as an E-4, did my time and got out. I had a bunch of cash and literally spent a year living at home being a bum after. Here in South Africa in the old SADF we had a joke about loosing ewuipment it goes . The day the recruits get their kit the SGT major stands in front of them holding up a rifle and said" because its govt property if you loose this you will pay for it" He then grabs webbing and said" You loose this you will pay for it" He then grabs an LMG " and says if you loose this or any other equipment you will pay for it." He then asks the new recruits "are there any questions." A recruit stands up and asks him "if he becomes a truck driver and looses or smashes the truck what will happen". The SGT major replies "Well if you are that stupid and careless you will go to jail and you will have to pay for the truck" The recruit with his question answered sits down turns to his buddy and says" Bucking hell now we know why a captain always goes down with his ship."

Back when I was a CO, I had a Platoon Sergeant who always seemed to attract the attention of the Bn CSM. I didn't have an issue with him, neither did the Top, but he was the CSM'S favorite chew toy. One day the Sergeant asks for a meeting with the Top and I and he bitches about how the CSM is after him. We hear him out and the Top tells him that if he thinks we are going to save him from the CSM, he is sorely mistaken. So we set up a meeting between him and the CSM and the CSM lays out a corrective action plan for this Sergeant like he was god's own fuck-up. In a year, this Sergeant I thought was fair to good, was on fucking fire. His people were squared away and cared for and his LT could not say enough about him. The CSM spotted greatness in that NCO and kicked his ass until he got it out of him. You don't have to love them, you don't have to like them, but only a fool ignores the insights of the CSM.
@Waltham189210 жыл бұрын
William Signs You don't have to be a great human being to be a great CSM. In fact, some of the CSM'S I've known over the years went to great lengths to prove that. That being said, sex offenders are found in every profession and walk of life. That a high ranking enlisted man turns out to be a pervert is disappointing, but its not surprising.

This is one of those comments that make me even care to scroll down to have a look at the comment section. Just the idea that greatness is something that has to be ass-kicked and disciplined out of certain people, great lesson right there. Good story.
@Waltham18929 жыл бұрын
Pomme843 If that's what you took away from my posting, you've missed the point entirely. Some men are born knowing the greatness inside of them. Others learn by following the examples of others. Some will only learn in the face of adversity or at the point of crisis. The CSM looked at this NCO and decided that the he needed adversity (him) and crisis (his corrective action plan). The Top and I settled for a fraction of what that NCO was capable of, the CSM didn't. That is what CSM'S are all about. Don't like it? Never met a CSM who cared.

SIXTA is known in the book (the actual accounts on the first weeks of invasion) the “Coward of Khafji”, a name he earned in the first Gulf War when he tried to abandon his post with a supply truck after he saw hundreds of enemies in a Kuwaiti town, Khafji, an account which he, of course, deny. Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Fernando is the one who is obsessed with “grooming standards”. SIXTA is his errand boy.
